Save big on Des Moines Car Insurance

21st Auto Insurance

When it comes to car insurance, Geico and 21st Century are pretty much well-known. Geico is considered to be bigger and this is largely thanks to their massive marketing campaigns. In fact, even though a person seeking auto insurance may not sign up with Geico, he or she will almost always get a quote from them simply because of brand recall.

On the other hand, 21st Century has a very nice tagline: "You live in the 21st Century. Isn't it about time your car insurance company joined you there?" This gives the potential customer the immediate feel that he's signing up with a carrier that understands car protection and problems in today's world.

Marketing aside though, which is the better carrier?

Geico Insurance: Online Presence, Offline User Experience

As Geico is such a huge company, it's not surprising that its website is also very big and detailed. The site is user-friendly, easy to navigate, provides good facilities to get a free quote fast, and has an excellent online system where you can file claims. There's also a lot of information you can read on their site regarding other types of coverage such as flood insurance, overseas coverage, condo policies, and more!

Offline, user reviews about Geico are mixed. On the good side, people believe that the carrier offers highly competitive rates, offer great customer service, and that their claims have been resolved quickly. Still, there are some who complain that it's a nightmare when you start making claims. Those for Geico argue that everything is writing in the small print. And so if your contract does not provide coverage for a certain thing, then your claims on that will not be paid. Of course, many argue that they have valid claims and are just not being paid.

21st Century Insurance: Online Presence, Offline User Experience

As for their website, 21st Century's seems a bit on the simple side. However, start clicking around and you'll soon end up on the information you need. It's easy to get a quote, they provide various other types of policies (earthquake, flood, homeowners, etc.) and they also offer a good facility to make claims online.

Offline, there's one negative thing that keeps on resonating during our research: many are unpleased with their customer service. In fact, many complain that they get hung up on(!) while in the middle of asking for a quote or filing a claim.

On the good side, many do agree that the company is true to its claim that they offer lower rates on car insurance.

As everybody has his own unique situation, it's important that you do extensive research before signing up with ANY car insurance provider. For starters, give Geico and 21st Century a call and ask for a free quote and see for yourself how their agents treat you. Once you get the quote, be sure to compare them point by point. Don't just look at the premium rate but on what it actually covers.

And last but not the least, it may be tedious, but do read the fine print!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is 21st Century Auto Insurance's coverage for letting a friend borrow your car?
I have 21st century auto insurance and i saw the commercial about how they extend your coverage to anyone you let drive your car. I was wondering how that worked, what are the requirements?

Because if that is the case then, one wouldn't need to buy any insurance for their children for example.

    • ANSWER:
You have to pay for it. It's additional coverage.

You have to have coverage for every driver of the vehicle. That would include children. When a child reaches the legal age and obtains their license, the parent adds them to their policy and pays for it.

  5. QUESTION:
    21st Century Auto insurance question?
So my policy went up without me even being notified and of course my card was on file. When I noticed they were taking alot more money out I called and found out the prices increased even when there was another plan that I could have had at the same price! I cancelled the plan and they told me I would have to pay for the 4 days that I had insurance and they'd refund the rest of the money for the month. Well I found out they took for just four days! I called and they tried saying it was for the policy yada yada yada but they really didn't understand that I had already paid previous months nor did they want to put a manager on the phone. What can I do? Can I speak to my bank about this unauthorized charge? Thanks. I just can't afford someone's stupid errors like this.

    • ANSWER:
Contact the company and go over your agents head for a full explanation. If you can't get a resolution from them you can contact your state insurance commission about the issue to get it resolved.

However they have a right to charge you for the 4 days worth of insurance. When you sign up for auto bill pay you agree to payments and you were notified at least 30 days in advance of the rate changes, the question is if you ignored the notice or not.

As for 70 bucks for 4 days? That's expensive but depends on where you live. Ask if there was a cancellation fee as that's probably the case.

They refered me to one of their body shops and they did an excellent job. The claim was paid promptly. The only negative is that they took about twice as long to fix my car as stated. I have no idea what 21st century is like now. I ahve since switched to Mercury and am extremely happy with them.

What do you guys think? Should i switch because 21st is well known? My parents have never heard of Esurance even though i've seen it so many times on the tv adds.

P.S. I'm paying for my own auto insurance...just wanted to get some suggestions.

    • ANSWER:

  15. QUESTION:
Where is the most cost effective auto insurance for male under 21?
I have been getting quotes online from a few places geico, esurance, and others and they are VERY expensive around 315-400 a month plus around 00 down. I have no accidents or tickets in the 3.5 years I've been driving. why is my insurance so expensive? PLEASE HELP!!! BTW I'm 19 years old.

    • ANSWER:
Statistically, unmarried young males are the highest insurance risk. And the carriers charge accordingly.

If you can add your car to your parent's policy, do that. Then you can take advantage of their multi-line/multi-car discounts. If you have been an honor roll student, maintain your grades, and that will give you (usually) another discount. If you have been driving for 3 years, you will be eligible for a good -driver discount, providing you do not have points on your record. Some insurance companies offer discounts for certain professions. Check to see if yours does.

Once you hit 25, or if you get married, your insurance does usually go down. Until then, you just have to suck it up.

  16. QUESTION:

what is the average cost of auto insurance for a 21 year old male?
if i could get a price range as well that would be great. i know it changes based on a whole bunch of other things but i would just like to know a general price range and average to budget. thank you

    • ANSWER:
Costs for auto insurance vary by the type of auto, your personal information, location, driving record, discounts you may be eligible for, et.al. I'm an agent in Texas and it is usually a little higher for someone your age than someone 25 and married...but if you have a clean record that will help tremendously. An independent agent, someone who represents multiple companies, can shop several companies to get you the best rates. Good luck.

  18. QUESTION:
    AIG for Auto Insurance?
We have had 21st Century auto insurance for years. Recently, they were bought out by AIG. Our policy is up for renewal, and I'm trying to figure out if we should continue. (Their rates are very good compared with others I have looked into.)

Does anyone know the risks of having AIG for auto insurance? I know they had to get bailed out, but what does that mean for us?

    • ANSWER:
None. As long as AIG is admitted to sell insurance in your state - and most likely they are - then any claims are guaranteed by the state insolvency fund, if they should go bankrupt.

BUT, the AIG that sells insurance, is a different company than the bailout one, and are financially rated A by AM Best. They aren't going broke.

I'd like to know... Whenever you're trying to obtain new auto insurance they take your driver's license number & social security number.. You'd think that they could look up any tickets/accidents you've gotten into. BUT, why do they ask?

If you "forget" an incident, will they find out?

This is coming from a 21 year old who was already paying ,200 over 6 months for insurance and was involved in an rear-end collision doing 15 in congestion on the interstate, now my premium is 00 for 6 months.

    • ANSWER:
First they can tell, so why do they ask...easy.
They ask you, you lie, they give you insurance and you make first payment, they catch your record and then charge you max which you have to pay because you lied. Yep, you keep asking the question. And no one here has read your policy.

Call your agent and ask. There's a good chance they won't pay. There's a chance they will, but add him on since the date he was licensed, and you'll have to pay 5 years of extra charges (if he was licensed at 16).

***yes, you screwed up. I went to their web site, and it says, "all regular and occasional drivers must be listed. But on the APPLICATION, it MUST have said, list all household members who are licensed drivers. So by OMMITTING a household member who is a listed driver, you CAN void coverage for that driver.***

  47. QUESTION:
do auto insurance companies give you choice as to how to handle minor car accident (fender bender)?
if anyone is an auto insurance agent or works for an insurance company:
I recently got in a minor car accident (i was at fault; their rear bumper collapsed) and was wondering:
    1. if you could get in trouble for not reporting it with your insurance company right away (and the other party does)
    2. if insurance companies give their clients a choice whether or not they want to pay for damages out of their own pocket (and not have their insurance rate go up) or use their insurance

(i'm not 21 yet so I'm scared my insurance rate will skyrocket)

    • ANSWER:
You should report this accident to your insurance company as soon as you can. While the accident may appear to be minor, the damage could be alot more than you think.

Also, it happens far too often....the other guy may decide that he was "injured" as a result of this accident. I have seen this occur way too often. You would want to have your insurance company handle such a claim.

If you can work it out with the other guy on your own, go ahead and do so, but beware of additional charges and/or potential injury claims.

  49. QUESTION:
    Massachusetts Auto Insurance?
having just relocated to Ma, Im forced to change my auto insurance policy because my big carrier (geico) doesn't carry policies here.. as a matter of fact NONE of the big boys write polocies in mass, that's 21st, geico, stat farm, Allstate, none.. Why is that?

    • ANSWER:
Massachusetts insurance industry is very heavily regulated -- this is one of the issues in this year's gubernatorial campaign. While regulation is keeping competition from freely entering the market and rates are much higher than in other comparable metro areas, the good news is that among the companies who do underwrite in Massachusetts the rates vary very little. Companies must follow a pre-set rate schedule that is based in part on the driver's experience, number of incidents, and other factors. Insurers are only allowed to deviate a little bit from these rates. Good luck!

  50. QUESTION:
Where to get GAP insurance on high APR auto loan?
Hey all. I was an idiot and bought a car at DriveTime. They sold me the car at 21% APR. I am very upside down on this auto loan and need to get GAP insurance just in case. Every provider I've found limits 12.5%. Anyone know of any other providers which have a higher APR limit? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Wow, well, have you called the insurance company where you insure the car? That's probably the BEST place to get the gap from.

Although they won't cover any negative equity rolled into the loan.

Besides that, either drive very, very carefully for the next three years, or sell the car/cancel the deal - even if it costs you. Sounds like it's going to cost you about three times what it should, anyway.
