Auto Insurance Ontario

There are changes coming to how car insurance benefits will work for Ontario drivers. Effective Sept. 1, 2010, the Ontario Government through the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) announced Ontario Regulation Number 34/10; which changes how automobile insurance works. The Ontario Government makes changes to Ontario's car insurance around once every five years.

One of the biggest changes is the decreased limit of medical rehabilitative benefits for Ontario's accident victims.

Under the prior system, anyone who purchased a standard policy of insurance had at the very minimum 0,000 available to them in medical and rehabilitative benefits. What this means is that under the previous system, if you were hurt or injured as a result of the use or operation of an automobile, you were entitled to various healthcare and rehabilitative treatment for up to 0,000. You were entitled to up to 0,000 worth of physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, occupational therapy, massage, cranial sacral treatment, aquafit programs, psychological counseling, social work, speech language pathology, neuropsychological treatment and any other treatment reasonable and necessary as a result of your car accident. This was a adequate amount of money, which protected Ontario's accident victims and assisted them on their road to recovery.

Under the new system, accident victims in Ontario receive just half of their medical rehabilitative benefits for the same price! Under the same standard car insurance policy, Ontarians will receive just ,000 for medical and rehabilitative benefits whereas they used to be entitled to up to 0,000 in benefits. Ontarians will essentially be paying the same premiums for 50% less benefits. There is an opt-in premium to increase your medical/rehabilitative coverage to 0,000 or ,100,000 for an additional fee; but I don't suspect that many Ontarians will opt in for this additional coverage. Many consumers may not even know it exists if their broker doesn't tell them about it.

In my experience, many seriously injured accident victims go through ,000 in medical and rehabilitative benefits really fast. Once this money gets maxed out, some accident victims have nowhere to turn and no means to pay for treatment.

Another noteworthy change is the reduced limits for attendant care benefits under a standard Ontario car insurance policy. Under the old standard policies, Ontarians were entitled to up to ,000 in attendant care benefits. Attendant care benefits are meant to compensate the attendants for those accident victims who can no longer care for their own activities of daily living. Some accident victims may need some help bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, cleaning, picking up toiletries/medications, or just need supervision for safety. The people who perform these duties are called attendants, and the money paid out to them from the insurance company for their time and services are called attendant care benefits.

Starting September 1, 2010, the standard limit of ,000 for Attendant Care Benefits will be cut in half to just ,000. Again, Ontarians will be paying the same price for car insurance, with just half the benefits available to them. Like the med/rehab benefits, Ontarians can pay an additional premium for ,000 or ,072,000 for increased attendant care benefits, but I imagine that only a small minority will pay that additional premium. And just like the new reduced limits to med/rehab benefits, the new reduced limit of ,000 for attendant care benefits can go quickly for seriously injured accident victims.

None of this is very good news for Ontario's drivers. The reality is that not many people pay attention to these noteworthy changes until they've been involved in an accident. It's only after you or a loved one becomes injured in a serious car accident that these changes become significant and troublesome.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Do I have to list all additional drivers for auto insurance in Ontario?
I am shopping for auto insurance and noticed that if I include my wife and son in the quote, the insurance jumps from 00 a year to 00. That's almost double and none of them have any accidents or anything. If I don't include them as secondary drivers, can they still drive the vehicle and be insured? And if not, does that mean that every family in Ontario must list all family members that MIGHT drive the vehicle? Answers are MUCH appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
yes you have to list them, because if you don't list all licensed drivers living in the household, and you have an accident, the insurer can deny the claim based on non-disclosure of information. If you don't wish your rates to go up, you could always have an excluded driver endorsement, but this is not really recommended because what if they absolutely need to drive the vehicle in an emergency...there would be no coverage.

If your wife and son have their own automobiles insured elsewhere, or say your son is listed on your wife's policy, your company would likely not charge for him on your policy. They will just require proof that they are insured elsewhere.

Or, if that's not the case, how about listing both, but having your son pay for his share of the premium? If he's listed on your policy, it will be to his benefit in the future, because he'll maintain a continuous insurance record, which will save him tons when he decides to buy his own Mustang.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the point in adding an occasional driver on my auto insurance (Ontario, Canada)?
Is there a legal obligation? Is there any impact on the auto rate if that person is young or have been involved in accidents? If the occasional driver gets involved in an accident, will it also be on my record?
But what is the difference if the occasional driver gets into an accident:
    a) if she's on the policy
    b) if she is not on the policy?

    • ANSWER:
Is there a law that says you have to? No, there isn't. However every insurer requires that you disclose all licensed drivers in the household as well as regular operators of the vehicle. If you fail to do so, and that person has an accident, then the insurer has grounds to deny any claim filed. This means you (as owner of the vehicle) and/or the driver of the vehicle could be financially responsible for everyone's damages/injuries, which means you could be in debt for the rest of your life. There is an additional premium charged for an occasional driver who is under 25, however an occasional driver over 25 can change your rating as well depending on how long they've been licensed, however the additional premium won't be as much as having an occasional driver under 25.
To answer your second question: regardless of whether or not the person driving is a listed driver on your policy, if that person has an accident which is their fault (even partially), then it will affect your rating. The difference between having them listed and not having them listed is by not having them listed you're running the risk of not having the claim paid.

  3. QUESTION:
In Ontario, how does auto insurance work? Do you need to insure yourself as a driver and your car separately?
In Ontario, Canada, how does auto insurance work? Do you need to insure yourself as a driver and your car separately? If anyone can help me with the details of this, that would be great. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yes you insure the car and yourself as the driver and then can add drivers and more coverage to the policy if you want to.Basically you must get a standard coverage such as 1 million dollar liability or basic coverage if driving it.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way shop around for quotes but be careful if you've a bad drivers record etc bec checking with too many places can be like lowering your credit rating or status and end up not in your favor.
If you want to give me more info such as your age , driving history, number of years driving and last time covered etc I might be able to recommend a company but going through an insurance brokerage can help a lot too.

  4. QUESTION:
How much should I expect to pay for auto insurance in Ontario?
    Gender: Male
    Age: 22
    G1 license date: October 2009
    G2 license date: January 2010
G license date: January 2011 until now
Type of vehicle: Brand new Volkswagen Golf 2.5L 3-doors
    Accident record: None

I tried to get a quote online, and ended up to - per month. Is it normal?

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,

It does depend on your location: in some areas of Toronto it is 0 per month!!! But take a more remote location, you'll be better off with 0-160. Quote of /mo does not sound right... not for Ontario anyway...

      Good luck!

  5. QUESTION:
My auto insurance lapsed for one year due to unemployment. Can I get insurance in Ontario now? Where?
My auto insurance lapsed for one year due to unemployment. Can I get insurance again in Ontario? Help! I just got a job! I never had an accident, no tickets. I called an insurance company for a quote and told them about my employment situation , they hung up on me twice!

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can get auto insurance again. In fact as long as you were insured for at least a year and were not cancelled by the insurance company (i.e. you were the one who properly cancelled the policy), then no insurance company in Ontario can rate for the lapse of insurance. However if I were you I'd call a local insurance broker and ask them for a quote rather than calling insurers directly.

  6. QUESTION:
Is auto insurance in Manitoba private or pubic? How is auto insurance in Manitoba different from Ontario?
Is auto insurance in Manitoba private or pubic? How is auto insurance in Manitoba different from Ontario? Which is better and why?

    • ANSWER:
Insurance in MB is public and governed by the province. One insurance, one level of coverage, and you cannot sue for pain/ suffering. Price is also set by number of demerits or based on driver experience. In ontario, insurance is private but still regulated somewhat by the government. In Ontario you can sue up to a certain amount for pain and suffering. Usually drivers under 25 years of age pay huge premiums regardless of driving history, in MB that is not the case. Hope that helps.

  7. QUESTION:
Ontario Canada Auto Insurance Companies. Can you recommend one that is reasonably priced.?
My insurance premium went up 0.00 in one year with my current insurance company. (No convictions), just a different car with a different rating. I did a quote search on line with Kanetix.ca already.
    Any other suggestions.

My husband and I have been using Belairdirect.
They're online, in Ontario, and have always been very helpful. They were the cheapest we found, and offer a [FAQ-ANSWER] deductible, million coverage. A few months ago, over winter, our rear windshield cracked and then blew up completely. They covered it entirely (not even a deductible, and no questions asked).

I highly recommend them. Check them out at www.belairdirect.com

  8. QUESTION:
Which auto insurance brokers in Ontario will cover modified cars?
I'm thinking of modifying my (suspension/turbo) car and do everything legit by advising the insurance companies. I'm having a hard time find a broken in Ontario, Canada who would oblige. I've been driving for +15 years and a clean record (knock on wood). I haven't called my broker since I'm afraid of them putting a check on my policy :) .

    • ANSWER:

  9. QUESTION:
Which auto brand is the cheapest for insurance in Ontario?
I heard that, for auto insurance, Van is cheaper than sedan, Is it true? Could you please tell me which auto brand is the cheapest for auto insurance (e.g. Ford, Nissan, Hyundai)? Thank you in advanced.

    • ANSWER:
I believe that if you want the cheapest auto insurance premium, just buy a used one! They don't base on any brand but they do base on your age and value of the car you are insuring!

  10. QUESTION:
What is the new Ontario Auto Insurance Reform?
Apparently some changes were made in September 2010? Can someone briefly explain what the new policy entails?

    thanks

    • ANSWER:
The Ontario government has introduced changes to the auto insurance system that are intended to provide greater price stability, and give drivers more control over the amount of coverage and price they pay for auto insurance. As a result, some coverages under the Ontario Auto Insurance policy have been altered, and a new standard auto insurance policy has taken effect as of September 1, 2010.

I had no trouble finding official links with a quick search, but any ACCURATE explanation is NOT going to be brief.

  11. QUESTION:
I NEED A CHEAP AUTO INSURANCE ONTARIO?
I have my g2, i am 19 years old, and i am trying to find a cheap insurance to quote me on a cheap car....its only a 99 cavalier 4 door. I have done a lot of online quotes and i have basically gotten the same quote around 0. I would like a quote more around the 0 range!! Help! Anyone know of any cheap auto insurances??
    Thanks!!
    Carley.xo

    • ANSWER:
Not going to happen, especially if you live in the GTA. 0 per month is actually pretty reasonable considering market conditions. 19-20 year old single males are the second most expensive insurance rating category for personal lines auto, the most expensive being single males 16-18 years of age. 0/month is a pipe dream, regardless of which vehicle you insure or how minimal the coverages you choose. The only two things I can recommend is keep shopping around (don't get your hopes up) or wait a few more years before purchasing a vehicle. In the meantime if your parent's/grandparent's are insured try and be added as an occasional driver under their policy. There will be a hefty additional premium to do this, however you really need to be insured for a year (and obtain your G license) before you'll see the premiums decrease.

  12. QUESTION:
    Ontario Auto Insurance by Month?
    Hi!

    Many thanks!

    Charles

    • ANSWER:

    all help is greatly appreciated.

  14. QUESTION:
    Cheap Auto Insurance Ontario Canada!?
Hi I am a 20 year old Female driver, I have never been insured before and looking to buy my first car are there any sites where i can get quotes. I am from Hamilton Ontario Canada. I have been in two accidents in the past 4 years
also i was at fault for both the accidents, =/

    • ANSWER:
With two at-fault accidents you only qualify for three companies: Perth Insurance, Jevco Insurance and the Facility Association. The Facility Association is the insurer of last resort in Ontario, and they'll insure someone when no one else will. None of these companies will quote you online, you have to call an insurance broker in Hamilton to get a quote with these companies (yes this means actually having to talk to a real human being). I work with all three companies and I quickly ran some numbers through my rating software. Unfortunately I don't know: the exact date of the accidents; how many years you've been licensed; the vehicle you have or where your exact location in Hamilton is; however if one of the accidents occurred within the last year and you had a 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier, Jevco turns out to be the cheapest of ,100 for minimum coverages. This is not an exact figure, but it will give you an idea. Contact a local insurance broker for more exact figures.

Her father was really upset and more or less accused me of lying saying that I told his daughter my car only had a scuff mark. She hit the license plate on the front and sliced the rubber holder and the damage was to the right of that. I'm a Senior Citizen with a good driving record and have not made a claim on my insurance in 40 yrs or more. Now I don't know what to do. It's too little to put through insurance as I have a 500.00 deductable. If they refuse to pay and I have to fix it, what is the best way to go about recovering the money. Small Claims court or ??

  22. QUESTION:
Any car insurance company in Ontario that will let me take out a policy if car is registred to someone else?
Hi, I want to take out a policy but the car will be registered to my boyfriend's name. Is there any auto insurance company in Ontario that will let me do that?

    • ANSWER:
Actually there is a form that allows you to register the vehicle, and of course insure it, letting your boyfriend retain ownership. It is similar to a lease, however you cannot involve money or then it becomes a commercial transaction.

We called it an "agreement between parties", in which your boyfriend gives you care, custody, and control of the vehicle for a period greater than 30 days, but doesn't gift you the vehicle. You register it, you insure it, you get the parking tickets, but you can't sell the vehicle, or otherwise dispose of it. In the even of a write-off, the cheque goes to him as the legal owner.
If you aren't the registered owner, you don't have an insurable interest.
And yes, if he is going to be more than an occasional driver, he has to be a named additional driver. If you are living together, the situation is different, he would have to be named a regular driver as well, and it would make no sense to insure and register in your name (unless he has no licence).

Recap, there are 2 types of ownership, legal, and registered, you would be registered owner, he would be legal owner.
Talk to the registrations people FIRST, then your insurance broker. It is relatively common practice in some jurisdictions, like Manitoba, where I was an insurance broker and vehicle registrations agent, it may not be so common in Ontario, or even accepted by provincial licencing authority.

  23. QUESTION:
How much for basic auto insurance in Canada?
I am driving my car from BC to Waterloo, ON. back for school.
I was wondering, in this case, which province's auto insurance I am supposed to get. Can I drive around in Ontario for more than four months with ICBC insurance? Or Do I have to get the new Ontario insurance? In BC I am still N, which is equivalent of G2, and I currently drove for closely three years. Another thing was, how much would the basic insurance cost a month? Is there any big difference between BC and Ontario?

    • ANSWER:
The best answer you're going to get to all your questions is from your own insurance people. Call them and ask them. Anyone other than them who gives you a price is guessing. (Maybe an accurate guess, but it's still going to be a guess.)

Hi. I'm looking to purchase a Class B camper van. Most of the vehicles I've looked at are over 20 years old, and according to the many insurance companies that I've contacted, can't be insured. I've noticed many older trucks and vans being driven daily, and am wondering how they are obtaining insurance. Please help!

    • ANSWER:
I do have an insurer who would be willing to take a look at your situation to see if they would be willing to accept the vehicle, however the vehicle must have a Safety Certificate (current within the past 30 days) and Propane inspection completed before they will consider the risk. My office is in the Toronto area. You can call 416-534-8455 and speak with the first available broker, explain your situation and they will take it from there.

  32. QUESTION:
Does Saskatchewan have public auto insurance? What are premiums like in comparison with Ontario?

    • ANSWER:
Mandatory auto insurance coverages must be purchased through the government auto insurer (Saskatchewan Government Insurance however they are better known as SGI). Comparing premiums between the two is a waste of time as the two provinces do not have the same population, populations density, climate, demographics, topography, policy coverages, etc. Might as well compare premiums between Ontario and Belgium.

  33. QUESTION:
Is auto insurance cheaper in B.C. than it is on Ontario?
Generally speaking is auto insurance cheaper or more expensive than it is in ontario?

    • ANSWER:
It is useless to compare rates generally in two different provinces, especially ones as different as BC and Ontario. Population, population density, climate, topography, crime rates, population composition, percentage of urbanization is vastly different between the two provinces, and all of these factors affect rates, generally. So if I told you rates were cheaper in Ontario than in B.C., it doesn't mean that if B.C. changed it's system to the system Ontario used it would mean rates would decrease, and vice versa. Also if you were moving from an rural area in Ontario to an urban area in B.C. you'd probably see an increase that has nothing to do with the provinces rates but has everything to do with urban vs. rural. I can tell you that ICBC does not use certain factors that insurers use in Ontario to determine rates, including age or marital status. So if you're under 25 you'll definitely see a large drop in what you're paying if you moved to B.C. For everyone else it depends on your specific circumstances as to whether you'll see a change in premium.

  34. QUESTION:
Auto insurance benefit are Taxable or Non Taxable Ontario?

    • ANSWER:
      Its non-taxable.

If your employer is making the payments its still non-taxable. However in those cases sometimes the policy is payable to the employer, and they still pay you regular salary.

  35. QUESTION:
Can I stay on my parents auto insurance policy if I move out?
I am covered under my parents' insurance policy (Ontario), but am planning to move out on my own. I do not own a car but I want to maintain coverage so that I have a good rating when I do decide to get one, and for the rare time I borrow their car. Can I stay on their policy even though I live elsewhere?

    • ANSWER:
I believe you can stay on as a driver covered under their policy. Now if the car was yours, and you moved away and took the car with you, then no. You would be lying about where the car was actually garaged and you would have to get your own policy. Hope this helps.

  36. QUESTION:
Will my auto insurance rate go up? (Ontario)?
I got a ticket for making an illegal U-turn (2 demerit points). I am an occasional driver with a G license. My insurance is with Allstate. Will my insurance rates go up?

Let me kno if you have any experience with Allstate, like if you got a ticket (what was it for?) and if your rates went/didn't go up (how much?).

    Thank you

    • ANSWER:
I don't have allstate ot live in ontario but I do know that even some minor violations can make your insurance go up. I think the best thing would be to call your insurance agent and find out what types of violations effect your policy. I wouldn't think however that it would go up too much considering it was a u turn. It wasn't an accident or a really high speeding ticket.

  38. QUESTION:
In Ontario do I have 15 days to get new auto insurance once my old plan runs out?

    • ANSWER:
Doesn't much matter where you are. If you insurance expires, you have no insurance. If you continue to drive, you are driving without insurance. If you wait 15 days, and then apply for a new policy, one of the questions they ask is "Do you currently have insurance?" and your answer will be "NO". That will automatically put you in a high risk class and raise your premium. Contact where ever you plan to get new insurance now, tell them the date your old policy expires, and they can start the new one when the old one expires and you will have seamless coverage.

So that brings up the question, why does everyone THINK they have 2 weeks (or 30 days) before they have to get insurance? If you are trading a vehicle in for another vehicle, and let's assume you pick up your new car on Saturday and Monday is a holiday... Your present insurance policy on your old car will cover your new car until you have a chance to contact your insurance agent to make the necessary changes. If is usually written into the rules as "as soon as you can contact your agent, or in no case any longer than X days." People seemed to think that applied to any car purchase...but it does not. Unless you have insurance specific to the vehicle you own and drive, you are uninsured except for a replaced vehicle, and only for a short time in that case.

  39. QUESTION:
Auto insurance benefit (Income Replacement benefit)are Taxable or Non Taxable Ontario?

    • ANSWER:
These benefits are non-taxable. The reason for this is that you paid income tax already on the insurance premiums.

  40. QUESTION:
Is it possible to have auto insurance in one province but need a health card in a different province?
I have Alberta insurance but live in Ontario and want to get an OHIP card until I go back to Alberta next year. Is this possible? I have lived in Ontario for a year.

    • ANSWER:
To qualify for OHIP you must:

      * be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; and
      * be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; and
      * be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; and
      * make your primary place of residence in Ontario.

It would seem you qualify, but only you can answer these questions for sure. If you feel you do then go down to a Service Ontario office and apply. Keep in mind two things:
      1) If you have an Alberta plated vehicle in Ontario for the last year you can be charged with having an improperly registered vehicle in Ontario. You're suppose to register your vehicle in Ontario within 90 days of taking up residence in Ontario.
      2) If you haven't informed your insurer in Alberta that the vehicle's been in Ontario all this time and will be for the foreseeable future then should you have a claim your insurer can deny it due to failure to inform the insurer of a material change in risk. This means you could be liable for all damages and injuries.

How does a traffic ticket, first offense, impact the cost of auto insurance in dollars or percentage?
I got a traffic ticket under the Ontario Highway Act for "Disobey a Stop sign" it carries a 3 demerit points and a fine. I would like to know how much this infraction may increase my auto insurance at renewal.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the company and its policies. Insurers don't routinely check your record on renewal because of the cost of doing it, but they will check at some point and see it. What effect it has on your rates is up to the company.

  44. QUESTION:
Auto Insurance standard rules for the Industry in Ontario Canada about occasional drivers?
I am interested to find out how many occasional drivers a car can have for a family of 4 as per Standard Insurance rules in Ontarion Canada. We have two cars and only one is automatic the other is manual, the kids can only drive automatic and we need to add 2 occasional drivers for one car. Insurance say the standard rules for industry is that if there are 2 cars per family each car should have one principal driver and one only occasional driver, I wonder if this is correct. As there are many families with one car and if more then one child how would the rule apply to the second child, or this rule is only for family with 2 cars regardless one of the car is manual, would appreciate if I can get some proffesional answer in detail. thanks

    • ANSWER:
There is no standard rule for occasional drivers, there's only individual company's underwriting guidelines. If your insurer wants to split the drivers in such a fashion, then that is what they are going to do. Would most insurers in Ontario work like that? Yep. Do they all do that? Nope. If you found an insurer that doesn't would pointing that out impress your current insurer? Nope. Your choices are to accept the insurers decision or to shop around for another insurer.

  45. QUESTION:
    Auto insurance in Canada?
I am an Australian citizen who currently has a full G Ontario licence. I am now looking to purchase a car and auto insurance. What are my cheapest options? I have been driving 10 years with no claims. Should i purchase a car and insurance in Ontario or would it be cheaper in another provice? Can i purchase, registar and insure a car in the U.S.A with an Ontario license as i plan to travel through the states shortly anyway before returning to Canada. Does anyone know the costs i should be expecting? Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
If you were to purchase and insure a vehicle outside of Ontario you would have 30 days once that vehicle enters Ontario to register, plate and insure the vehicle in Ontario. Do you have an experience letter from your insurer in Australia? Some insurers in Ontario will recognize experience from Australia (some won't). Without this proof of experience you will be treated as a new driver regardless of which province/state you try and purchase insurance in.

  49. QUESTION:
drove drunk and a car accident, need help finding car insurance in Ontario, Canada?
I'm currently a G1 class driver and I got into a car accident in January (Crashed a car because i drove drunk but i told the insurance company i had only one beer and was normal), and I got my license back a few weeks ago. Right now I'm having difficulty trying to find an auto insurance company so I could get my G2 so could anyone help me PLEASE?! I DESPERATELY NEED THIS, I LEARNED MY LESSON.
My dad checked with some car insurance companies, they said my record will be there for 4 years. I got my g1 at the age of 16, which was two years ago, it would be best just to get a new G1? would it not?

    • ANSWER:
No you cannot get a new G1. When you applied for your G1 a license number was assigned to you. That number stays with you in the province of Ontario for life. So anything you did under that license number stays with you. Even if you were to let your license lapse for 20 years when you went to get your license back you would get the same number.
I'm assuming you're male and that you live in Toronto. You are a residual market risk because of the number of years licensed and the at fault accident back in January of this year. That means you only qualify for the high risk market. In the high risk market there is Perth Insurance, Jevco Insurance and the Facility Association which is the insurer of last resort for high risk drivers ((I work with all three companies) ). I quickly ran a quote for an 18 year old single male with a G1 license and an accident in January 2010, and I used a 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier 4 Dr as the vehicle. For the minimum coverages required by law in Ontario the Facility Association is the cheapest and their premium is ,040 for the year. Of course I also noticed you mentioned you got your license back. Was your license suspended? Was it because you were convicted of violating your G1 restriction of having zero alcohol in your system? If you were convicted of that offense your premium would now be ,826. If you lived outside of Toronto the premium may be cheaper, but we'd be talking about being several hundred cheaper (not several thousand). The accident affects your record for six years (so you have something to look forward to in January, 2016). Convictions affect your record for three years from the date of conviction (not the date of the offense).

  50. QUESTION:
can i buy auto insurance for a car that's not registered in my name?
My father owns a car that he's willing to let me use exclusively but he doesn't want to go through the trouble of registering the car in my name. I live in Ontario.

    • ANSWER:
Depends on the company you are with and where you live. Here in NC, vehicles are supposed to be insured the same way they are titled. So it would be insured in your father's name and you would be listed as a driver. But many people insure their vehicles incorrectly, but it'll catch up to them eventually. Trust me.
