Average Auto Insurance Rates

Driving drunk is a very dangerous thing to do, and can result in a variety of different consequences. If you are convicted of a DUI you will have to deal with points on your license, drivers license suspension, high fines, attorney/court costs, and more. While these items just mentioned tend to be short-term consequences, you may not have considered the long-term consequences that can arise if you're convicted of a DUI. If you're convicted of a DUI your car insurance rates and even your ability to have insurance coverage will be affected.

Higher Rates

More than likely your insurance company will be notified if you're convicted of a DUI. If the company does not suspend your insurance coverage, more often than not, you can wave goodbye to low rate car insurance for a long period of time. If you don't like the higher rates your current company wants to charge you, you can try changing insurance companies, but even changing typically won't save you money because you'll be labeled as a high risk driver, which will result in you paying higher car insurance rates wherever you may go. More than likely your insurance company will have to send an SR-22 Proof of Insurance Certificate to the state showing that they are covering you, in order for your drivers license to have your license suspension removed.

Cancellation

In some cases, if you have been convicted of a DUI, some car insurance companies will actually cancel your insurance policy. Not all companies can issue an SR-22, so this can result in your car insurance policy either being canceled or the company not renewing your policy at your current renewal date. Although some states may not allow your insurance company to cut off your coverage in the middle of your plan, they can stop covering you when your renewal dates come around. If you have questions about cancellation policies, you may want to review the laws in your state or sit down with your agent.

Available Insurance

If you end up having your current insurance policy canceled or not renewed, there are a variety of companies that will be able to offer you car insurance coverage. While you'll be able to find coverage, your new car insurance rates will still reflect the fact that you have a DUI on your record. In some states the DUI is only on your record for five years; however, other states may keep it on your record for life.

Being convicted of a DUI can have a variety of different consequences, both short-term and long-term, and there is a good chance that it could affect your car insurance rates for the rest of your life. If you are interested in keeping your car insurance rates low, plain and simple, don't ever drive drunk. Driving while intoxicated is just a very bad decision. It not only comes with financial consequences, it puts you and others at great risk safety-wise as well. Before you decide to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking, make sure you take a moment to think about the consequences that can last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does anyone know where I can find a list of average auto insurance rates by vehicle?
We have a 16 yr old daughter whos looking for her first car. We wanted to find a list (if one exists) of average insurance rates to see which cars cost the least to insure. This way she'll know which cars she can afford. Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
Welcome to the club! We have tried a few and changed to one that saved us over 00.00 per year. We tried all the others and got so many quotas it made our head spin. So for the last 5 years we have been with AARP Hartford Ins. We have two boys on the policy, one 21 and the other is 17 with three cars. The type of car has very little to do with insurance rates. It is mostly figured on the people driving. A good example of this is to indicate that if you rent a vehicle and you contact your insurance company they will tell you not to buy the extra insurance because you "YOU" are insured and therefore what ever your policy is will cover you in the rental. Our policy for 3 cars and 4 drivers; Mon, dad, boy 21 and boy 17 with AARP in the State of Texas is just under 00.00 a year. Progressive wanted over 00.00 a year to one boy. With AARP you will have to become a member and the fee there is .00 -- well spent money..

  2. QUESTION:
Do the amount of miles driven affect auto insurance rates?
My policy lists that I have coverage of 12,000 miles a year. I average less than 6,000 miles year however.

    • ANSWER:
You may want to ask your insurance co. if the car can be classified as a "pleasure car". I did this once through the recommendation of the ins. co. and saved a lot of money.

  3. QUESTION:
Should women pay higher Social Security Insurance Rates?
Inspired by an earlier question about the gender difference in auto insurance rates, the answer seemd to be that male-caused accident payouts are higher (for whatever reason), thereby justifying higher insurance rates. That is, men are the higher pay-out risk.

Let's apply that reasoning to the U.S. Social Security Insurance Program. Originally conceived during the Depression, the Social Security Insurance Program was designed to provide some kind of post-retirement insurance that you would have some level of income after retirement (if you lived that long, which is why it is an insurance program). However, women live longer than men (in the statistical sense). And, on average, women recieve nearly twice as much social security income as men (per dollar payed into the program). Should women pay roughly double the rate that men pay to cover this higher "payout risk"?

Curiously, I have never heard a feminist complain about this Social Security Insurance rate inequity, though I have raised the above question with feminists many times. Why, I wonder, is that?
Mama Outlaw: You are right about the payouts being very low for poverty stricken people. That is because the original conception was that it is an insurance program, and payouts are proportional to pay-ins in insurance programs. Should it be reformed? Many argue yes, but that would be a very tough political battle.

    • ANSWER:
It's actually a fair question, but of course SSI isn't run in the same way that a for-profit insurance company is. It's a government-run social program that was started--and in a lot of ways is still run--as a way to manage the burdens of old age, unemployment, death of a spouse or parent, and poverty relating thereto. Your question is akin to asking why someone who doesn't have kids has to pay taxes to fund public schools. It's a public policy issue, and part of living in our society, with all its ills and benefits.

  4. QUESTION:
What are the implications for parents (in Ohio) who add a teenage son to their auto insurance policy?
I have a 16 year old step son who is anxious to learn how to drive. Before I put him behind the wheel and add him to our policy, I want to gather some facts on how doing so will affect our (my husband & my) clean records. Will his low gpa (grade point average) be a reflection on the policy as a whole? How will any violations he has impact our records and credit ratings? My husband and I are planning on building a house in a year or so and would like to know specifically what kind of risks we are assuming - insurance rating, credit rating and otherwise - so that we don't jeopardize are own hard work because of his negligence! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
ok as far as his low gpa that is what some insurance companies use to give students a discount(high gpa).if he has an accident it will not affect your or your husbands personal driving recors but will affect the cost of your insurance as long as he is in the household(raise it). also by just putting him on it it will raise as he is an inexperinced driver and assigned to the high risk section of the insurance policy.your credit wont be affected as long as you make allthe payments on time.the violations will only go on his license but they will affect your policy(insurance) as long as he is in the household and has access to the vehicle.it is always a gamble to put teens on you r insurance but most cannoyt afford it on their own.your policy will go up.

  7. QUESTION:
What is the average car insurance premium in Mississauga, Canada?
Hi, Can anyone please provide an realistic figure of how much it would cost per month towards car insurance in Mississauga. Checked in the below website and gives a high spike in rate : 0 CAN per month !

    https://www.kanetix.ca/auto-insurance

(Given 5-6 yrs of clean driving history in US)

    • ANSWER:
No one has ever figured that out because it would be a useless figure to the individual. If I told you it was 0 per month, what exactly would you do with that figure? Insurance is rated individually, not on an average. Kanetix is a terrible website, especially considering your situation where you came from the U.S. Contact local insurance brokers, explain your situation and get a quote from them.

I have an 80% average in school and my parents have auto and home insurance with statefarm. Only 125cc 130km/h tops. first vehicle. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
My daughter looked at them when they first came out and her insurance company said 00 in Ontario the agent said that they have to have a history on the bike before lowering the rates because these bikes are new to Canada and they have the CBR tag.

  9. QUESTION:
How does auto insurance work in at fault collision?
Hello, I am curious as to how my auto insurance policy would cover body damage to my car. I have comprehensive/collision coverage, as it is only a few years old and still owed by the bank. I accidentally ran into the side of my garage, and the front right side and bumper have scratches/dents in it. The nearest body shop quotes average in the 1800 dollar range for repairs, which I don't have. Can I have my insurance cover this, with a 500 dollar deductible, and if so, will it affect my insurance rates? My insurer is California State Automobile Association. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, your collision coverage will take care of this damage. It may negatively affect your rates, but not nearly as much as paying for the damage yourself out of pocket.

  10. QUESTION:
    CA Auto Insurance Broker Fee?
What is the average rate a Broker Charges when you sign up to insurance through them in the State of California?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know that there's an average. In most other states, you can EITHER charge a brokerage fee, OR take commission, but most states won't allow the agent to do both.

  11. QUESTION:
Does it cost to switch auto insurance companies?
Mine was renewed {mine renews automatically) in April, but due to a change in finances, we started to look for something lower recently. We found one that is around cheaper, plus offers roadside assistance. Do I have to wait until April to change it? If it does cost, what is the average charge? I know this rate will vary, but my agent is a very rude, and always acts like I am bothering her. I just wanted to get an idea before I called her.

    Thanks

  12. QUESTION:
Why auto insurance premium dependent on credit score? I think it is unfair.?
A bad driver with good credit score gets to pay lesser premium than a good driver who has average credit score. I think it is gross misuse of credit rating for deciding auto premiums. Somebody needs to fight this overusing of credit score check for everything

    • ANSWER:
For California, my understanding is, a credit score has nothing to do with the "rating" of premium, that is to say its not a rating computation factor. A credit score only determines "eligibility" into insurance programs or the availability of all the payment options. A not so good credit score may not make you eligible for payments in their top tier company that has their best rates so you are offered payments that you qualify for in a lower tier program but has a bit higher rates. However, if you pay the entire term premium in full for their top tier program, the credit score will/should have no bearing on your premium and you will recieve the exact same total premium as a person with a "good" credit score. The good news is there are plenty of insurance companies that do not take credit score into account in offering you their best rates. 13. QUESTION:
    Teenage Car insurance Impossible?
For starters I am for the most part completely ignorant as to the workings of Car insurance or really.. anything involving cars.. so bare with me.. I'm trying to figure out how to get insurance as a primary driver

I'm an 18 year old male still in school with a full G license, the car is a 1995 ford model worth only.. 1000 $ max, it's 2 door, I have a 75%+ average in school, I have no prior accidents or tickets. Essentially perfect as far as all the "variables" that effect insurance rates go. Yet when i got quotes online they are still telling me I have to pay 380 $ monthly. What the fuck? On average I only make about 400 or 500 a month.. adding on gas money to that my cost of living is practically negative from just drive to and from work?

So I guess what I'm asking is.. Is teenage car insurance even possible without help from mommy and daddy or dropping school to work more? Can anyone link me or give me the name of auto-insurance companies that give the best rates for Teens? Anything in the 2000-3000 $ range a year would be perfect
    I Live in canada
I'm not exactly looking for people to tell me It's expensive, i am aware of this fact. I would appreciate if any drivers my age or had insurance at my age tell me how they managed it, or which insurance companies supports (Cheaper for) young drivers

    • ANSWER:
Just pick up the phone and phone. Look up "CAR INSURANCE" in the big yellow book.
Ask for k collision and nothing else. (maybe k medical for you?)
Tell them your car is worth

  14. QUESTION:
    insurance question! (need some help!)?
ok im doing a research paper on raising the driving age to 18. One of my main points is that auto insurance will go down. I really need evidence or insight to prove this. Please try to find the average rates for 16 year olds and for 18 year olds. Thank you

    • ANSWER:
You're going to have a really hard time finding that evidence - because it doesn't exist.

MOST insurance companies don't give the first break in rates, until the kids have been driving THREE full years. Since you can't get licensed before 16 1/2 in most states, that's 19 1/2. Not 18.

And since many states base it on how long you've been driving, rather than AGE, if you're a newly licensed operator, it doesn't matter HOW old you are.

  15. QUESTION:
Why are we paying so much for auto insurance?
My husband and I have a 2006 GMC Envoy and a 2008 Saturn Vue. We're currently paying 0 per month for full coverage insurance on both vehicles. We called around and this seems to be the lowest rate we could find (we've been with the same insurance company for three years). My husband and I are in the 25-32 age range, with no accidents and only 1 ticket within the last 5 years. Are we paying too much for insurance or does this sound about average? What do you pay for insurance?

    • ANSWER:
Your question has many answers,It is really depends on your minds, you may do some research online and make your own decison.

  16. QUESTION:
What's the average price of homeowner's insurance in Las Vegas?
I know this is a vague question but what are some estimate homeowners insurance prices in Las Vegas? The house is worth 180k, its brand new (built 2008). No pets or children, three bedrooms, 1700 sq ft. My fiance and I are first time homebuyers and we have excellent credit. I just wanted to know if anybody had any ballpark numbers (I plan on contacting my current auto insurance provider soon, but I want to hear what other locals are paying so I know if I'm getting a good rate)... Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It is tough to say, without knowing more about the home, however, the “average” annual premium in Nevada is 1 a year, according to a the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ Homeowners Insurance Report. You can see the full report here: http://www.naic.org/documents/research_stats_homeowners_sample.pdf To get an accurate, fair quote, talk insurance broker. 17. QUESTION:
i need a big auto loan. i have some questions. please help.?
i am soon to be 22 years old. i got my first credit card at 18yrs old and immediately maxed it out (00 limit). i made a late payment about 6 months into paying off the amount, but all other payments were above minimum and on time. late last year i paid off the rest of it (about 00) all at once. i cut up my card and havent used it since.

i work part time (4-5hrs a day) at my moms law firm. i make around 0 every 2 weeks. i have no expenses (i dont pay rent, i dont pay auto insurance, i dont drink, etc..) my schedule is very flexible and i can work more hours anytime i wish.

i want to take out a ,000 auto loan over 60 months. i calculated that with an average interest rate of 7.45% that monthly payments would be 0 a month. this is absolutely fine for me because im a car enthusiast and dont mind paying that at all for the car i want (03+ bmw m3, doesnt depreciate much at all)

is it possible to be approved? i can also have my mom or dad cosign. mom: lawyer, dad: cpa
i wont be paying for insurance on the car.
the car will be a used car.
i work the hours that i do because it is comfortable for me(as i dont have any expenses), but i can easily work more if need be.
both of my parents have very good credit.
I WILL NOT BE PAYING FOR INSURANCE ON THE CAR.

WITH EITHE RONE OF MY PARENTS AS MY COSIGNER SHOULDNT I BE ABLE TO GET A GOOD INTEREST RATE BECAUSE OF THEIR CREDIT?

    • ANSWER:
You can't afford that car without working more hours. A lot more hours by the sound of it. At /hour, which is what it sounds like you make, you'll need to work full time without any other expenses to be able to afford the payment and insurance. With your short credit history, a history of maxing out your credit, and the late payment on your record, you are not going to get a loan at 3 - 5% like the previous poster wants you to believe. i wouldn't even bother to contact that person. I doubt you would get one at your "average" caluclation of 7.45% either. I'm guessing that with your income and credit, you can get qualified, but it'd be closer to 15% APR.

  18. QUESTION:
Recommend good pet insurance and avg cost?
Normally when someone asks the average cost for insurance via auto, health etc, no one can state since there are so many variables such as age, state you live in, and history of claims.

And this maybe the case in pet insurance. We presently have a 15 month old golden retriever which we got at 12 weeks old. It was purchased from a breeder. It is AKC, if that matters.

This is my husbands 4th golden retriever; The first was a mother who gave birth to his 2nd which I met when he was 7 years old.

Mother #1 died at age 10 due to brain injury; not accident caused, but due to age . #2 lived to age 10 also and died due to brain seizures.

#3 bought from a breeder also at age 8 weeks and was the absolute best; he died at age 12 and 1/2 due to tumors. he had a non-malignant tumor at age 10, had surgery and was ok till the 2nd and last; even though most likely not malignant, he was old and the quality of his life was not good, so we opted to put him down. the 1st surgery at age 10 cost around 5k total and they expected the 2nd to cost around 7,500 due to his age and blood problems.

this last one will probably be our last dog due to our age. he is a pistol and nothing like the other 3. he is finally starting to act like a golden with their great disposition which is the reason my husband has had the prior 3.

Due to the problems of large dogs, especially golden retrievers, many have about a 50% chance of dying of cancer. They believe due to so much in-breeding that is the cause of the increased rate in the last 10 years or so from reading articles on the internet.

Since he is still young and to date no health problems, can we still get pet insurance for him? Are there any specific exclusions that would not be covered? Is there common deductibles and co-pays like in health insurance?

I was going over our expenses and prior to our last dogs final tumor, the vet bills were almost 1K for pain pills, steroids and various tests. the final ER vet bill was addtl ,500 for care and to have him cremated.

So if any of you have had pet insurance, what things should I look for and any problems that we might encounter if we were to be put in a big bill or surgery to save our dog.

    thanking all in advance

    • ANSWER:
Very sorry to hear about your unfortunate loss.

I found some good information in a free guide to pet insurance at this site:

      http://www.pet-insurance-information.com

They also compare various top plans and you can even get free quotes, right from their comparison grid.

      Hope this helps.

  19. QUESTION:
    Is this fair?
In states that have mandantory laws to keep auto insurance, Shouldn't it be a mandantory law for insurance companies to have a basic low rate for drivers that can't afford the outragous prices that insurance companies charge you? I know insurance rates have more than tripled the rates of basic insurance since these laws have passed! Let's get together and do something about it!!! I'm not speaking of drunk drivers that abuse their privelage, But the average working man, woman that can use that money for groceries or to pay everyday bills ect. Im MAD!!! This just is not right!! Do you aggree?

    • ANSWER:
Sorry, but driving is not a right, but a privilege. Now, the reason the basic rates have increased, is that the risk has increased by the larger pool of "bad" drivers.

If you have a "bad" driving record (not sure what that means, but to insurance companies, that can be risk factors such as age, gender, location, and then driving history) you will have much higher rates than others. If you have not had insurance previously, you will automatically be put into a "high risk" category (because insurance carriers will not have previous accident histories, and you could have been in a ton of accidents without tickets).

Insurance companies are out to make money, so your job is to look and find a company that will provide the insurance you need, and still be affordable.

Frankly, the other way to look at it, is that this way you know that when you get rear ended, and end up hospitalized, the other driver will have coverage to pay your bills and lost wages (plus, of course, pain and suffering, etc.).

      Good luck.

  20. QUESTION:
How do people afford to live these days?
Mortgage rates alone would be ridiculous if it wasn't for the foreclosure crisis. But when you look at:

    Home, auto and health insurance
    Home and auto maintenance
    Kids
    Food
    Taxes

That's a lot of money and those are things the average person pays for. I'm trying to figure out how I can afford just a home right now and I have a decent paying job. How does everybody do it?

    • ANSWER:
You need to work hard and live within your means. Mortgage rates are not high. You obviously were not around when Jimmy Carter was President and the Democrats ran both houses. Back then mortgages were at 18%. I suspect that Obama's socialist agenda with the backing of the Democrats in the House and Senate will send us back up in that regard. Then you'll have to work harder and pay more taxes. Good luck.

  21. QUESTION:
I am looking to buy a motorcycle (Kawasaki 250r), but have a couple questions?
Hi, I am looking to buy a motorcycle (my first). Specifically a Kawasaki 250r. I want it new and retail is k. I am 18 but do have parents who could "buy" it since they have credit if you catch my drift. Im really confused and need some help on a couple things though..

-Should I get a motorcycle loan or a personal loan?
-Can you even use a personal loan for a motorcycle?
-What are the average interest rates for the better option?
-Will this increase my auto insurance for any reason?
-How long does a bike like this usually last if well maintained?
-Any information on maintenance would be great, (how often to get oil changed, how long brakes and tires last, etc..)?
-If I were to get a used one, roughly how much would it cost me to have a mechanic verify its in good shape?
-Is it worth buying a new one for 00 more if it doesn't have 5000 miles on it? (idk how much is too much)

Sorry for all the questions, I just want as much information as possible, thank you. =]
One more.. This might be stupid but I thought you didn't have to have insurance for a motorcycle, I thought it was optional.

    • ANSWER:
The 250 Ninja is not as good a first bike as many make it out to be. It is very user friendly, but is fairly peaky in power delivery. It is also covered in expensive plastics, driving up insurance/repair cost. It is good for inner city use, but not a good choice if you must go on the hiway

I got a personal loan, when I financed one while in the military. This provided me a variety of legal advantages- couldnt be repoed for not having full coverage insurance, or even if I defaulted, I had more control in the event that it got impounded, etc so yes you can. But I advise you donot fiance consumer goods. Pay cash.

I had no credit, and a 18% interest rate.

Your insurance will become unreasonably outlandishly high.

It will last forrver if you take care of it. Sportbikes dont die of old age/high miles like cars do. They die when a squid buys more bike than he can handle.

Brake tire and clutch wear varies greatly based on your level of aggression. Oil changes are to be done ~5kmi, valve clearence needs to be checked, and chains/sprockets are somewhat high maitence.

Buy a used bike. Dont pay over 00 for your first. I recommend a dual-sport if you have never ridden at all.

  22. QUESTION:
How Much will YOU pay for the Nationalized Health Care reform?
INDIVIDUAL MANDATE: All the plans require individuals to get health insurance, with government subsidies or expanded programs to help people with lower incomes purchase coverage. New online exchanges would be created to help people shop for policies at more affordable group rates. About 15 percent of U.S. residents, or some 46 million, lacked health insurance in 2008, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.-----This is similar to requirements of Auto Insurance, http://www.compuquotes.com/average-costs-of-insurance.html----This bill will require YOU to pay for your insurance. How much is yet to be determined.

EXPANDING COVERAGE: President Barack Obama and top Democrats in Congress say they want to cover all Americans, yet the proposals would still leave millions of people not eligible for Medicare uninsured, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Under the House proposal, about 17 million people, almost half of them illegal immigrants, would lack coverage, the CBO estimated. The plan by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus would leave about 25 million uninsured, a third of them illegal immigrants, the CBO said.------ How do you FORCE Illegal immigrants to pay for insurance? They don't pay for Auto Insurance. The uninsured costs to insurance are simply transferred to those who do pay for it.-----Again how much will that be?

INSURER REQUIREMENTS: Insurers would no longer be able to reject new customers with pre-existing medical conditions; new restrictions would be placed on their ability to set premiums.----What are the "new" restrictions which will set premiums for private insurers? Is this a means to end their programs, thereby establishing ONLY government run insurance?

REDUCING COSTS: The legislation is intended to lower long- term health-care costs for consumers and the government.----Granted, the more people in a particular program the less it will cost (LONG TERM), but the statistics point out 46 million will be included within which program? The Governments or Private? The additionally insured will no doubt increase the costs to the individual policy holder. Again how much will that be?

All the plans call for greater access to preventive care, either with new programs or the elimination of co-payments, a change that proponents claim will save money by keeping people from developing diseases that are more costly to treat. They also call for more use of electronic systems to promote better record-keeping and reduce overhead costs.---Simply put this is Control over your day to day life. Standards will be em placed to prevent you from having that Hoagie with extra mayo.----Record keeping on a Government Run Nationalized Health Care Mandated fulfillment will ultimately undermine your INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, no matter if it is in this bill or not eventually the Government will know everything about YOU.

Obama favors a new independent commission to set reimbursement rates for providers who treat patients in Medicare, the federal program for the elderly. The Senate finance committee draft embraced this idea, saying it would reduce costs by taking authority away from Congress and making payment decisions less politically charged. Members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of self-described fiscally conservative House Democrats, also support the plan.----Good Idea

BIOLOGICS: Biologic drugs, which are made from living cells by companies such as Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgen Inc., would get 12 years of protection from generic competition under a plan passed by the Senate health panel and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The White House had sought to limit the exclusivity to seven years as a way of bringing prices down.----Concessions made to Pharmaceutical companies in return for political clout in advance of the reform bill. In other words the Pharms said they would cut costs up front in order to get their return long term.

COMPARING TREATMENTS: Legislation in both the House and Senate would create research centers to examine the efficacy of various health-care services, devices, treatments and procedures. None of the bills require the research be used to force health providers to adopt new procedures or policies to cut costs, which is an administration priority. Obama provided .1 billion in the stimulus act to fund so-called comparative effectiveness research.-----Teams will be in place to determine WHAT care (policy/procedures) is needed based on statistics for any particular disease. PUBLIC OPTION: The three House panels and Senate health committee would create a new government-run insurance program designed to compete with private companies such as Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group Inc. and help reduce prices for insurance in the market. The House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate health panel require that the new entity ne

  24. QUESTION:
Do you think this Geico ad is deceptive?
Geico Auto insurance says in their radio advertisement that "you can save 0 by switching to Geico" (we'll even assume that the 0 figure is accurate - but they don't state where the 0 figure comes from). I think this ad is clearly deceptive for several reasons.

First of all, it says you "can save" money, not that you "will save" money, but it gives the opposite impression.

Next, it implies that Geico insurance is (on average) 0 cheaper than insurance from other companies which is blatently false.

And finally, and most importantly, it bases the 0 savings on people that "switch to Geico" only. It's not a comparison of all Geico rates with the rates from other companies. So, naturally, if you switched to Geico (and most people switch companies to save money), their rates will appear to be less than the company they switched "from".

I think their advertising is genius.
They even have a spin off that

      company!
They're just not gonna get my $$.

I want your religious perspective on this. So after you answer, state: Are you a believer or non-believer?

I also asked this question in "advertising" to see their perspective on it...
Believers and non-believers interpret what they read (in the Bible, for example) differently.
So, by last count... atheists tend to think it's deceptive, while believers (and people that refuse to answer - probably believers - ) tend to think it's not deceptive. Interesting!

    2. Consumer Reports (January 2005) indicates that prot margins on extended warranties are much greater than on the purchase of most products. Consider a major electronics retailer that wishes to increase the proportion of customers who buy extended warranties on digital cameras. Historically, 20% of all digital camera customers have purchased the retailer's extended warranty. To increase this percentage, the retailer has decided to oer a new warranty that is less expensive and more comprehensive. Suppose that three months after starting to oer the new warranty, a random sample of 500 customer sales invoices shows that 152 out of 500 digital camera customers purchased the new warranty. Find a 95% condence interval for the proportion of all digital camera customers who have purchased the new warranty. Are we 95% condent that this proportion exceeds .20?

    • ANSWER:
      1. ANSWER: Sample Size = 43 for 95% level of confidence

      Why???

SMALL SAMPLE, LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE, NORMAL POPULATION DISTRIBUTION

Margin of Error (half of confidence interval) = 3
The margin of error is defined as the "radius" (or half the width) of a confidence interval for a particular statistic.
      Level of Confidence = 95
      σ: population standard deviation = 10
      ('z critical value') from Look-up Table for 95% = 1.96
The Look-up in the Table for the Standard Normal Distribution utilizes the Table's cummulative 'area' feature. The Table shows positve and negative values of ('z critical') but since the Standard Normal Distribution is symmetric, only the magnitude of ('z critical') is important.

For a Level of Confidence = 95% the corresponding LEFT 'area' = 0.48. And due to Table's symmetric nature, the corresponding RIGHT 'area' = 0.48 The ('z critical') value Look-up is 1.96

      significant digits = 2

      Margin of Error = ('z critical value') * σ/SQRT(n)
      n = Sample Size

      Algebraic solution for n:
      n = [('z critical value') * σ/Margin of Error]²
      = [ (1.96 * 10)/3 ]²

Sample Size = 43 for 95% level of confidence

  27. QUESTION:
Any REALISTIC ideas how we can scale back our budget?
Here's a breakdown of my husband and my monthly obligations:

    Mortgage: 06
    Car payments: 6
    Electric: 0
    Natural gas:
    Verizon:
    Cable/phone/internet:
    Water/waste disposal:
    Life insurance:
    Auto insurance: 4
    Student loans: 0
    Credit card:

Currently, my husband is getting a lot of overtime, and we are bringing home ,400 a month. However, in June his overtime will end for about 8 months, and his income will settle back down to approx. ,000 per month. Both of these figures are after health insurance, taxes, and our 401(k) contribution of 4%.

I am extremely grateful that we are making what we are in this terrible economy, but it's very frustrating because once the overtime ends, we will just be making it, with room for few extras, and I just don't know what else we can cut down/cut out.

    Our mortgage is not going to change; in fact, it could very well go up if our homeowner's insurance premium goes up or our city decides to raise the real estate tax;

    We owe 3 more years on our cars, and 6 TOTAL between both payments is quite cheap, and it's silly to trade one of our cars in for something cheaper since we have already paid so much on them, so there's not much to do with that;

    Our natural gas, electric, and water bills are right on par with the local average - we are very conscious of our lights, heat, and water usage, and can't cut these bills back anymore without major discomfort;

    We are in the middle of a 2 year contract with Verizon and are on the cheapest plan available (they actually don't even offer our plan anymore... we are grandfathered. The cheapest plan currently for two lines is extra a month);

    Our phone/cable/internet bill cannot be reduced - I work at home and depend on the house phone, since my husband and I share a mere 500 peak minutes on our cells, our cable is the minimum package at a month - basically just prevents us from needing rabbit ears, and our internet is the cheapest available in our area;

    We just acquired life insurance, which is ,000 each whole and 0,000 each term - that's a necessity, especially since we are 23 and 24 and locked in our rate for life;

Our auto insurance could be lowered by upping our deductible to 0, but I called and asked about it, and it would only make a difference every 6 months, which doesn't seem worth it considering we'd be upping our deductibles so much.

The student loan... well, there's not much we can do about that. We could get it financed for more than the standard 10 years, but then you are just spending SO much extra money in interest.

We have recently paid off ,100 furniture, 0 department store charge, ,500 Best Buy, ,600 on my credit card, and now all we have left is my husband's credit card, which has a ,000 balance. Most of this debt was from early in our marriage and we decided quickly that we didn't want to carry debt, so we have been working hard to pay it off. Before my husband's overtime ends, we will have paid the credit card completely off.

So... any realistic ideas of how we might cut our expenses? All the articles on the internet are so cheesy or unrealistic. For instance, I'm not in dire enough of a situation to reduce my heat to 60 degrees!
-- OUR income will be ,000. Not just his.
The insurance deductible reduction would only lower my auto insurance every SIX months, not every month. I wish it'd lower it per month! :)

    • ANSWER:
You have made some big strides paying off all that debt. Good job!

It looks like you will have free up from the credit card debt. I suggest you add that to your student loan payment or car payment to help pay that debt down faster.

You need to get to [FAQ-ANSWER] car loan payments as fast as possible. If you can sell a car and replace it with a fully paid for vehicle that helps. Drive a clunker if that is what you need to do.

Can you find more income? Is there a 2nd job husband could take while OT is not there or is there a job you can find to help compensate for lost OT?

If your husband's credit card is at a high rate like over 20% then I suggest you contact http://www.moneymanagement.org/ because they can help reduce rates to 6%. That can be a big saver.

Can you drop Verizon? That is a lot of money for a cell phone when your budget is so tight. Vonage offers home phone service for a month and there are others that are cheaper than that.

Perhaps while OT is gone you can reduce your cable and internet service so monthly outlay is less. Can you cut it altogether or go to a less expensive plan until OT is back.

Don't try for home run but take the singles. Drop your deductible and take what they give you. Drop you thermostat to 65 if 60 is not comfortable right now. Enough little things add up.

  28. QUESTION:
why are older cars re-emerging as popular now?
Reading through several questions and answers I found that personality in addition to reliability and cost have large parts to play in people's decisions.

There is no truly American made car anymore, and by most people's standards they don't care if their car is made in America or not as long as it's affordable. If you priced an American branded car over the price of a foreign branded one, I think you would find that people are more price sensitive than patriotic. This of course is the case in parts of the country like Colorado and Utah where there's no "car culture". Places like Michigan and midwest that were home of auto production for many decades still have the "American or nothing" mindset. Reason being is that if you bought an imported car, the impact would hit closer to home. Your next door neighbour might work or know someone who works at an assembly plant and the effects of you buying the imported car mean the company selling less and therefore not needing as many workers or cutting back working hours because of that.

Another part is that the economy that we're in right now makes buying and affording a new car more difficult. An economy car is ,000 for a nice one, and buying a classic model like 60's or 70's might cost ,000 if you get a deal on it. The newer car will seem to be maintenance free for the first few years because everything is of course new on the car. Most parts on most cars new or old last about 7 years, just standard wear and tear on parts not because of low quality. Most people are now concerned with fuel economy (big thing now) and make the argument that newer cars get better economy, which they do. However even if you compare a car that gets 28mpg hwy and one that gets 19 hwy the cost difference in ownership is still higher in the newer car. Most people don't think about the taxes they have to pay on that new car, nor higher insurance rates, nor car payments and interest for a period of several years. On a new ,000 car you'll probably pay around ,000 in interest if you get a good (for today's standards) loan. The price difference between ,000 and ,000 is of course ,000. Just calculate at current fuel prices how long it would take to spend ,000 in fuel.

Safety is another thing people are concerned with and of course they have every right to be. There are two things to this that I'm concerned with. Safety is great, but I also believe it's much of the driver's responsibility to learn how to drive their car(s). Newer cars have loads of safety features and are unarguably safer than a classic American car. Yet the converse of this is that the younger drivers of today don't have the experience and skill to be able to get out of possible accidents that older more experienced drivers can have.

I'm choosing to drive my 67 Fairlane over my 03 WRX for a few reasons. The Subaru isn't nearly as unique as the Ford and even though safer and possibly more reliable, the way it looks (how I bought it) sometimes gets the wrong kind of attention as in people want to race me. I can also fix many more possible issues that come up with the Ford without needing a code reader and code decypherer. It rarely needs to see a mechanic, and at one point out of owning 4 cars, "the old Ford" as I used to refer to it actually was the most dependable.

The 60's and 70's makes of American cars that are popular today were also race cars. The companies had to produce a car that the average consumer could buy in order to race the cars. This meant (from many documentaries, some that are a bit biased) the cars were going to be much more rigid and made to last in a grueling race. Economy cars are the opposite. Many of the parts in those cars aren't made to last a long time because the company wants you to of course buy a car, but it's not the companies that are evil. An econobox is made to be inexpensive and so the quality of parts (not labour) is usually lower than it's more powerful relative. The production methods on both powerful and value based cars are equalising. Most companies for a long period had the same types of cars. Their racing line (challenger, charger, fairlane, nova, chevelle) were built to race, and the economy cars (tempo, escort, pinto, etc.) were mostly underengineered as the companies just didn't care to put the focus (no pun) or energy into cars that weren't selling well.
Another post to a question I was reading is the fallacy that older cars are not made as well. I would have to disagree with that on one part. Many of the more popular models as stated above were made for racing. However 1960's and 1970's engineering was nowhere as good as it is now. You can install modern things like engines and gearboxes and get the car just as dependable if not more in ways than a new car. 28mpg hwy is not unreasonable to ask from say a new direct injected 5.0 mustang engine and 6spd gearbox.

    • ANSWER:
I have only seen a re-emergence in old cars in the styling of newer ones, especially in muscle cars where they basically just replicated the old designs for new models. Now I'll address some of your other points.

Most Americans really only care about "getting from Point A to Point B". It sucks that this is how people see their lives. They don'y care where there cars were made as long as they are getting good value for their investment. However, take into consideration that foreign automakers have manufacturing plants here in America for example: Mitsubishi has a plant in Illinois, Toyota has one in Mississippi, and BMW has one in South Carolina which is soon going to be the biggest car plant in the U.S. So foreign cars often end up being more American than the American brands.

Comparing a classic USED car to a NEW modern car is an unfair comparison. Of course your not going to take out a loan for an old used car thus no financing/paying interest on it. Plus you wouldn't spend much on gas anyway. But then compare a used economy car to a classic car for the same price of 00. Think of popular examples like a Honda civic or Toyota Camry that last forever. Now the costs of ownership, insurance rates, and some tax rates are way down.

And while yes, age and experience are mega factors in driving safety, classic cars are death traps. All that age and experience doesn't matter if you hit some black ice at night or if someone's brakes fail at an intersection. There are a lot of accidents you can't prevent because you can't see them coming and I would rather be in a car with the most advanced safety features than one that "looks cool" when my life is on the line.

And who says economy cars aren't race cars?? lol That WRX you have just happens to be the basis of a World Class rally car. EVERY manufacturer designs their cars with the most advanced styling and technology (hopefully) based off their research from racing. New ford focuses and fiestas are famous for their use in various racing formats.

YES unfortunately older cars are not made as well simply because their age has caught up with them. Sure with modification they can be almost as good as new cars in high performance or with economic driving in mind, but manufacturers keep making new cars for a reason:to improve them over the old ones.

  29. QUESTION:
Why did this insurance agent try to push me into buying an expensive alarm system I don't need?
I just bought a homeowner's insurance policy for a house my husband and I just purchased. I bought our policy over the phone from a well respected company I will not mention because of their good service overall. The agent I dealt with was absolutely insistent that my husband and I install a monitored home security system in our house because we would get (a rather paltry) discount on our policy. I tried to explain to the rep that paying for the system, including monitoring would never pay off even if we were robbed because we don't have many things someone would want to steal. Other than an off brand flat screen TV (that's chained with a lock under its base to a very heavy solid wood TV console and we're even thinking about attaching that to the floor joists), an inexpensive DVD player, a shelf of DVD's mostly bought from the bargain bin at Wal-Mart and a couple of cheap laptops (that don't even have Windows installed on them, we're Linux users) there's not much of value. She kept saying that what would we do if we were hit by ,000 in loss from a burglary. Including a motorcycle and 2 cars (all insured for theft); we would be lucky if everything we have to our name, other than the house is worth that much! Plus, we live in a rural area in Alabama with a low break-in rate; I checked county crime stats for the past 10 years and we're well below the national average. The nosy neighbors don't hurt either :)

In order to break into the house you would have to get through a standard door lock, two deadbolts on each solid core security grade entry door, various window locks and avoid setting off wireless threshold motion sensors on all exterior doors and windows that let off an ear drum bursting screech that would deafen anyone within 100 feet. I work from home so I'm literally in the house all day and anyone dumb enough to break in would run a pretty high risk of getting a .22 shoved in their face anyway. The rep was still insistent that we "needed" an alarm even after hearing all of that. I couldn't get it through her head that it doesn't and probably will never pay for me to own an alarm system.

She then started going over my auto policy and mentioned that it would be a wise idea to put a Lojack or Onstar system on my two vehicles because of another paltry discount! My husband and I own a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville and a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup; which are probably the last vehicles anyone would want to steal.

She just didn't get it that some people live frugally and only buy what they actually need. She also seemed to take great offense when I told her that I thought it was dumb to spend 00 on an alarm system, plus monitoring fees to protect a few thousand dollars worth of stuff in a low crime area in a house thats already locked tighter than Fort Knox and practically under armed guard! My dad's obsessed with home defense so I learned how to use a gun when I was 14.

I'm 22 and this was by far the most annoying experience I've had in the whole home buying process! I would have hung up on her but I needed the insurance paperwork sent to my mortgage company before the end of the business day. The insurance company I'm using doesn't even have any connection to these other companies whatsoever! I don't get it. Is this woman completely crazy?

  31. QUESTION:
What are all the costs i will have to consider before moving into an apartment?
i want to consider the worst possible situation so i can consider everything and not have anything surprise me. consider an apartment where i would be paying for almost everything. here is what i have so far.

    rent
    auto insurance
    car payment
    phone
    food
    hygienics (toilet paper, toothpaste, etc.)

utilities (tell me if i missed any):
    electric
    heat
    gas
    water
    sewer/trash

I am considering a 1 bedroom studio apartment. the first list contains all of which i am sure about the price. the utilities however could be anything. i don't plan to ever have more than one light on at a time, and that will only be when i specifically need it. no a/c ever, no cable, no internet. by these living conditions what could you assume my bills would be like, considering i lived in a generally urban area?

also, what things are flat rate payments, meaning even if i never used them i still have to pay monthly, and what things depend on how often i use them.

i want to know if i missed anything in my lists, and again, how much could i expect to pay average?

(also would help if you just told me everything you pay for in your apartment and how you live)

    • ANSWER:
Add to your list: gasoline, car maintenance/repair, washer/dryer rental or laundromat expenses,

Find an apartment in your area that fits your budget and ask them for estimates of utilities; it won't be exact, but it could give you a ballpark estimate. Most utility bills have a flat payment portion and a variable portion (depends on usage). Some apartments include some or all utilities in the rental price, some don't. Some require natural gas, others don't.

To prepare for moving out on your own:
Build a budget including all income and expenses. Typical monthly expenses include: Rent, Loans, Water, Cable, Internet, Phone, Electricity, Car Insurance, Renter’s insurance, Groceries, Gasoline, and spending money. The cost of bills depends on where you live. There are lots of free budget forms for download; also check out DaveRamsey.com and mint.com for help budgeting. Rent should never be more than a third of income; many landlords verify this before they’ll offer a lease. If you don't have enough money coming in to cover these expenses, consider getting a roommate.

Make a savings plan to prepare for moving out. There are lots of "start-up" costs involved in moving out the first time. Deposits for apartment and deposits/installation fees for bills are the largest factor. Other things to save for are: Furniture (bed, couch/chairs, coffee/side tables, TV stand), electronics (TV, Computer, Microwave), Pots & pans, Dishware, Silverware, Bedding, towels, and the list goes on. Buy items that are easy to move before moving to decrease the amount you're spending at one time. In addition to saving for the items listed above, put some in savings for a “rainy day” in case of job loss, medical emergency or car accident. ,000 is the minimum, 3-6 months bills is recommended.

A great way to prepare for living on your own is to live by this budget before you move out and put what you expect to pay in bills into a savings account. Not only does this get you in the habit of living off the money budgeted for non-essential items, but it’s a great way to build up savings.

  33. QUESTION:
Should ARZ Thank Sheriff Joe and other law enforcement agencies in Maricopa county for doing their job?
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas held a press conference Sunday to announce a significant decline in auto thefts in the Valley.

Thomas attributed this to the fight against both crime and illegal immigration.

A Maricopa County Attorney's Office press release stated, "Newly released figures from the National Insurance Crime Bureau show that from 2006 to 2008, the Phoenix area fell from having the 4th highest ranking in the nation for auto theft to 19th in the nation."

According to the report, the number of auto thefts per 100,000 people dropped 36 percent, from 979 in 2006 to 602 in 2008.

Vehicle thefts have fallen 46 percent since 2004, according to the report.

In 2006, Thomas formed an Auto Theft Bureau in his office, which has prosecuted more than 3,000 defendants with a conviction rate averaging 90 percent.

Thomas said that this, combined with the efforts of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to crack down on illegal immigration, can be directly attributed to the sharp drop in Valley auto thefts.

"Law enforcement can be proud of the stunning decrease in auto thefts we've achieved," said Thomas. "In other border states, this success has been elusive. The link between crime and illegal immigration cannot be ignored. Progress is possible if we take a two-pronged approach to combating these two related problems."

Joe Arpaio is a hero. I live in California and this state has been totally destroyed by illegals. BTW, 85% of legal Hispanics, including citizens, are out and out traitors because that's how many support the illegal alien criminal invaders. I hate to say it but most liberals and Democrats are traitors too. That makes me sad because I am a far left winger myself. But here in CA the illegal alien problem is so horrible that it is not that weird to find liberals and even Leftists who are stark raving furious about this issue.
