Compare Prices
In the insurance industry, prices vary widely from company to company. It is recommended that you shop around and compare quotes to get the best rates. You can get car online insurance quotes from many different places online. Your state department of insurance website may also be a good source of information.
Check the Financial Stability of the Insurer
Before choosing a car online insurance company, you want to make sure they are financially stable. An insurance company should have the financial stability to be able to pay out a claim if you get into an accident. ambest.com and standardandpoors.com are 2 places online where you can find financial ratings of insurers.
Compare Insurance Costs of Different Makes and Models
Some cars cost more to insure than others. Cars that cost more to repair have higher insurance costs. A vehicles safety rating is also a factor in its insurance cost. Cars that get stolen more often hcarry higher insurance premiums as well. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety at www.iihs.org has more information.
Get Higher Deductibles
A deductible is the amount of money you agree to pay per accident before the insurance coverage kicks in. Raising your deductibles dramatically decreases your insurance premiums. Raising your deductible from 0 to 0 can lower your collision and comprehensive premium by up to 30%. You may want to consider putting that cost savings into a savings account in case you need it to cover the cost of repairs in case of an accident.
Consider Dropping Comprehensive and Collision Insurance on Older Cars
If your car gets totaled ina an accident, your insurer will not cover more than your car is worth for collision or comprehensive. If your car value does not exceed 1 years worth of collision and comprehensive premiums, it may not be cost effective to carry the insurance. You can find out the value of your car at edmunds.com, kbb.com, or nadaguides.com
Car Online Insurance Discounts
When you are shopping for car online insurance, inquire about discounts for the following list of items. Not all insurance companies offer these discounts. These discounts should be factored into your car online insurance quote.
Multiple Policy Discounts
Many insurance companies will give you a discount if you have more than one insurance policy with them. If you own a home or another vehicle, see how much of a discount you can get by insuring your home and your vehicles with the same company.
Safe Driver Discounts
If you are a safe driver and you have not been in an accident or had a moving violation within the last 3 years, many insurers will discount your premium.
Good Credit Discount
More and more insurers are using credit reports as a way of determining insurance pricing. There is no definite explanation as to why this is so. Good credit means better insurance rates. Check your credit report and make sure there are no errors or inaccuracies that may lower your credit score.
Low Mileage Discounts
If you have a short commute to work or if you telecommute, you may be eligible for a low mileage discount on your car insurance.
Group Discounts
Some employers and labor unions are able to get group discounts on car insurance and other types of insurance for their employees or members. AARP and AAA have discount car insurance plans for members. Check with any professional groups or organizations that you belong to see if they have group discount insurance plans for their members.
Safety Devices
Having safety devices such as anti-lock brakes, air bags, and automatic seatbelts can also lower your insurance premiums.
Anti-Theft Devices
Anti-theft devices such as alarm systems, lo-jack, and systems that disable the engine can give you some savings on your car insurance policy.
Defensive Driving Course
You can get reduced insurance rates if you or any members of your household complete a defensive driving course.
Car Online Insurance Quotes
There may be other discounts offered by your insurance company that are not listed here. Be sure to ask the insurer or insurance agent what other things that you can do that may lower your premium payments.

QUESTION:
how can anyone justify buying auto insurance from a cartoon?
those esurance ads are really getting on my nerves! some cartoon chick fights ninjas, robots etc. and we should buy insurance from that? if, by chance, you signed up for that, why?if you didn't (hopefully everyone), how do you feel about those commercials?
-
ANSWER:
Cartoon, lizards, cave men, which is worse?

QUESTION:
Instead of buying auto insurance is there a way to just have a savings account just for $coverages?
So all US states require all cars on the road to have insurance ... since insurance is just dollars put asside for release in the event of emergencies or other pre-determined event ... why cant I just put 0,000 into a bank account and call it my auto liability account and have my car insured with the state under my name providing that I don't touch those funds?-
ANSWER:
Some states will allow you to post a bond instead of buying insurance - but you can't put the money in YOUR savings account, it has to be held by a bonding company or the state - ie, it won't get interest. That's so if/when the accident happens, you can't change your mind and decide not to pay the other party.

QUESTION:
When buying auto insurance, why do they do a credit check?
Why does your credit effect your insurance premium. My insurance company withdraws my premium directly out of my checking account, and if I do not pay my insurance, they would simply cancel my policy, so what role does credit have in this situation. I must of had a "ding" or two on my credit, because after I was quoted, my premium went up a few bucks a month after they ran my credit. I have never caused and accident, nor had ANY moving violations......been driving 17 years....what gives? Is this just a way to get more money out of us? Being late on a couple bills over the years does not make you a reckless driver!-
ANSWER:
It's like prior speeding tickets - insurance companies have found a direct corrolation between credit score, and claims paid out. There haven't been any studies, to the best of my knowledge, WHY people with lower scores have more claims filed, and more paid out on claims - so anyone who says "it's because you don't maintain your car" or "its because you driver carelessly" is talking out of their hat (or, SHOW ME THE STUDY!!!).
But I have seen the charts with my own eyes!! That show, people with a credit score of 705, on average, have paid out in claims for every paid in premiums; and people with a 550 have .50 paid out for every paid in premiums.
Insurance departments in just about every state allow credit score to be used as a rating factor, because the mathematical relationship is THERE, and is PROVEN.
Sorry, they really don't care about why.
Now, what you need to do, is get a copy of your credit report and clean it up!! MOST of the time, closing out all the unused, newer accounts can seriously increase your score - as it's not just about paying bills on time, but how many times you've applied for credit in the past six months, how many accounts you have open, balance due on accounts, available credit (lower those credit lines!!), and the average length each account has been open.
Yep, people who move from one credit card company to the other every year, getting the lowest interest rate, and always paying on time, have a WORSE credit score than someone with a couple late payments, that's had the account for 10 years.
Hope that helps.

QUESTION:
Will buying auto insurance with my bf save us both money?
We live together and have a child together. We drive each others cars a lot. Will it benefit us to get a joint policy?-
ANSWER:
If you both have good driving records and are similar ages then you will likely be able to save money due to a multi vehicle policy discount. However, most company's will require that the vehicles be registered in both of your names. At least have them both registered to the named insured. This isn't always required but is general your safest bet.
Call your agent to check it out and the restrictions on registration.

QUESTION:
For buying auto insurance, which is better: direct to the company or thru an agent? What are the pros & cons?-
ANSWER:
Great Question. More people should ask it before they buy insurance. The ONLY people who should buy direct are people who are in the insurance business themselves.I am not an agent. I am a claim adjuster and see what happens to people when they buy direct without any assistance and screw themselves over in the process.
Car insurance is too important and complex for people who don't work in the business to get it right the first time.
Having an agent will allow you to have somebody explain why it is not a good idea to get the minimum liability coverage required by your state. (It is NEVER enough)
An agent will also know all the "fine print" that you probably wouldn't even notice if buying direct, especially online. They advise on many things you won't get help on buying direct.
Go with a local agent most will work very hard to do what is best for you and your family.

QUESTION:
What are New Jersey's minimum requirements when buying auto insurance for a LEASED car?More specifically, Liability amounts, PIP amounts, Bodily Damage amounts, etc... Thanks!
-
ANSWER:
As per the laws for auto insurance in NJ, you must carry at least a standard policy with a minimum of ,000 of coverage for property damage, a minimum total of 000 for injuries for all parties in an accident, and a minimum 000 of bodily injury liability coverage per individual. This minimum insurance requirement is commonly referred to as 15-30-5.
Though it is not legally mandatory under the laws for auto insurance in NJ, it is highly recommended that you also carry underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage.
This coverage protects you in specific cases, where you suffer from injuries or face property damage in an auto accident while another party is at fault, but the party at fault does not have adequate amount of insurance coverage to pay for the loss caused to you.
In this situation, if your policy has this coverage, it will pay you for the loss.
If you are found guilty of violating the laws regarding auto insurance in NJ, you will face certain penalty charges.
For example, the penalties for the first offence include a possible (not mandatory) license suspension for twelve months, community service, and 0 of monetary fine.

I intend buying a new Honda. What auto insurance buying process do you suggest?
Problem is:I don’t know whether to insure it before or after buying the car.i may consider comparing quotes online, but i don't know if this is necessary.

Comparing quotes is only necessary if you want to optimize your money vs value.
If you don't care paying k yearly for some cover that might cost you to some 5 somewhere else then just buy from the first one that comes along, as in all things.

QUESTION:
What matters most to you when buying auto insurance?-
ANSWER:
What matters most is how far you are covered in the case of an accident. There are three questions I would ask:How much am I covered for if I have an accident and it is my fault?
What happens if I am injured in an auto accident and I need medical attention and can't work?
What happens if the other driver is at fault but hasn't got any insurance?
You always think that these things won't happen to you, but just look at all the questions on Yahoo and you'll see that they do.
Have a look at this website because it's got a lot of useful information.
Good luck!

QUESTION:
In what ways does buying a car affect auto insurance premiums?
I'm looking at buying or leasing a new car and am wondering how that'll affect my auto insurance premium. Also, which features in a new car affect the premium. I've heard about red paint and sports cars causing higher premiums, but are there any other factors?-
ANSWER:
The car affects the premium. New cars are worth more than cars several years old, so they cost more than older ones. High priced cars cost more because the potential loss is much greater than for that of lower priced cars. Sports cars cost more because they're supposed to have more accidents. I'm not sure that's true, but that's what the people who set the rates think. Also, cars that are stolen alot have high premiums. You also affect the premium. Do you have a good driving record? That lowers premiums somewhat. If you're middle aged or older, your premiums are usually lower because older people are considered safer drivers than young ones. I'm not sure that's true, but again, that's what the people who set the rates think! Hope this helps ya!

When you purchase car insurance is it better to have the car under your parent's name for ownership and add your self as an additional driver for your own policy to save money even when you will be driving most of the time?
Well my dad has perfect record been driving for 35 years. Is it still better to get my own? They say ownership of the car is important.
Well for me I have perfect driving record since 18 years old but they want 00 for 1 year of insurance for k coverage with 0k for the entire accident and that seemed pretty expensive. I've been driving since 18 years old and have no accidents or bad driving record and they still want that much. My car is only worth 00 since I am driving a 1990 Toyota Camary. I can't believe the insurance i pay for my 1 way insurance is worth more than my car
-
ANSWER:
Since you car is only worth a thousand dollars there is no reason to have full car insurance drop it down to Liability, medical and under insured/ no insured. This would mean if you wrecked your car and it was your fault they wouldn't give you any money. Take the extra money you are saving every month and put it aside for your next car. There is no reason you should be paying that much. You might want to just call them up and ask them or consider switching companies.

QUESTION:
What issues do I need to know when buying renters/auto insurance with a domestic partner and adopted child?
I don't know the questions to ask or issues I might encounter and what to make sure there aren't any gaps in my coverage. (i.e., is my DP's stuff covered under my rental policy?)-
ANSWER:
Depending on your state law, you could have a VERY hard time finding a company willing to write a policy on you and a non-spouse.For a rental policy, you have to be a named insured. It covers relatives (NOT Live ins) and their stuff, but the named insured gets paid. Most companies will NOT list two non-married people, both as named insureds.
For auto policy, you have to have ownership interest in the scheduled vehicles. Unless you BOTH are on the title and registration, you will NOT both be "named insureds". There are coverages on an auto policy afforded to "named insureds" that are NOT afforded to "listed drivers". So if you were to list your partner as a driver, that would be fine for YOUR cars, but the policy would NOT cover them if they were to borrow someone else's car, or rent a vehicle.
I'd recommend you each have your own policies. Or rather, talk to a local agent, and see what your particular state laws allow. But I'd HEAVILY recommend you each have your own policies.
Oh, the child part doesn't matter. They're covered just like a natural child, under renters and auto.

QUESTION:
Buying auto insurance?
Can two brother's buy auto insurance regardless of if they live together or not?-

Sure.
What the insurance company is looking for is called "insurable interest". Basically, they need to own the vehicle together or drive the car regularly. They rate the car based on where it is garaged at night.

QUESTION:
Is it important that your auto insurance company has an office in your town?
It is the first time that I am buying auto insurance, and I am not sure which company to choose.
I am considering to buy Amica Mutual insurance. However, the problem is that, its closest office to me is 125 miles away. Is this gonna be an issue? Should I consider this when choosing my insurance company?-
ANSWER:
No, strictly speaking it's not important... but it can be helpful, especially if you've never bought a policy before. I found it was much easier to talk to someone in person rather than over the phone when I was trying to decide how much coverage I needed. Plus it can sometimes be easier to get a hold of a local agent than a regional agent if you need to make an immediate change to you policy (i.e. you buy a new car or need to add a second driver).I personally like having my agent local... but you don't *need* one.

ANSWER:
The must have is Uninsured Motorists coverage. If you need to get full coverage, take a 0.00 deductible. You might want emergency road service, its usually not very much to add on. That is the main thing you want, even if your just getting liability, you need the Uninsured Motorists!
Try Geico, they are usually the best, and cheapest, and very dependable service. Hope you get the best you can.

QUESTION:
How do mexicans look for auto insurance in Mexico?
When you live in Mexico, do people use yellow pages, local independent agents, online websites..how do they go by buying auto insurance?
Also, what is their biggest problem when coming to the usa and looking for auto insurance, aside from the language barrier? Are the coverage similar, do they have a trust problem, etc..what would be the most helpful thing a US insurance company could do for them?
Thanks for your help.-
ANSWER:
Auto insurances are a bit cheaper here in mexico... most banks and insurance companies offer auto insurances. Here in Mexico, most banks are in every state, so they have nationwide customers, and brochures can be found in every bank.Auto insurances are also advertised on TV, radio, online, yellow pages, but most of the time, people already know the names of the companies, and they would just ask for a quotation by telephone.
It is not mandatory to have an insurance here, so a lot of people (mostly poor people who cant afford insurance) wont have one
I drive a 2006 Toyota Rav4 and I pay around 1000USD/ year for my auto insurance with inbursa (www.inbursa.com.mx)
As I did, most people will go to the bank and just buy the insurance there.
When coming to the US there are a bunch of scenarios, mainly:
1) if I were to drive all the way there, I would have no problem and I understand that my insurance has coverage.... but it is too far anyhow.
2) when renting a car.. no problem, just get the insurance too.Language barrier,,, hmmmm, yes probably, but most people that can afford it would be able to understand what ur selling.
Of course that there are people that doesnt speak english in need for an auto insurance.

QUESTION:
Do I buy auto insurance before buying a used car??-
ANSWER:
Here's the proper order for doing things:Step one: find two or three insurance companies you've heard good things about, and so are willing to consider for your insurance needs.
Step two: find the car you want, or at least that you think you want at the moment, or at least identify a specific make and model you're interested in.
Step three: call each insurance company on your list, get rates for insurance based on your identified make, model and theoretical purchase price as determined in step two. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples; ask for detailed breakdowns of the types and amounts of coverage, and the deductible.
Step four: now that you've (hopefully) found a good insurance company that you can afford, find the car you really want and negotiate a price.
Step five: call your new insurance company, let them know the specifics of the car you're about to buy, and get your new insurance policy. Odds are, since you haven't actually purchased the car yet, you'll need to coordinate between the seller, the insurance company and yourself so that coverage starts the moment you take ownership (no sooner and NO LATER.)
Step six: when you've got your insurance coverage IN WRITING and you're the legal owner of the car, drive it home. Until you have both of these things, don't drive the car home (test drives before you are the legal owner, of course, are fine.)
This process will be greatly simplified if your parents can put you and the new (used) car on their policy for a single month; it will be more expensive, but you won't have to coordinate the timing so closely.

QUESTION:
Can you buy auto insurance the very moment you buy a car? Do insurance companies work that quickly?
Can I call an insurance company the instant I buy a car and say, "Hey, I just bought a car. I want to get insurance for it."? I think companies should do this because if I take off from the dealership without insurance, and somebody hits me on the way home, I'm in trouble, right? I looked everywhere for this information, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Could somebody clarify this issue for me?-
ANSWER:
If you buy a car and have a loan on it you are required to have insurance before leaving the car dealership. Most insurance companies have a way to buy on-line or over the phone.

QUESTION:
After buying a used car, could I drive it right away without auto insurance?
After buying a used car, could I drive it right away without auto insurance? Do I have to have auto insurance in CA? Thank you!-
ANSWER:
Yes you have to have liability insurance in all states to legally drive a car on the public roads. Depending on your state, it's possible to drive a car off the lot without insurance but it's not very smart. You could be liable for a very large amount of money in an accident. Also, if you get stopped by a cop, some states have some pretty hefty fines for driving without insurance.

QUESTION:
Why dont LIEbrals understand that auto insurance is mandatory only if you are going to drive a car?
If you dont have a car, then you are not mandated by the STATE to buy auto insurance and not by the federal Government. So i should be allowed to chose Not to buy health insurance instead of being FORCED to by the federal government. So the health care bill is unconstitutional.-
ANSWER:
Libs dont understand common sense and want the nanny state dictatorial government.
-
-
QUESTION:
Why do Libs bring up auto insurance as a forced payment that we are ok with paying?
Let me ask you Libs something, if I don't have a car, do I need to buy auto insurance? However, it seems that if I don't use medicare and aren't sick, you still want me to pay for it anyway whether I want to or not. Thanks a lot neo-totalitarians.-
ANSWER:
I'm with ya brother. I don't want to buy health insurance. Being insured is a terrible burden on me. If I am in need of a surgery I'll just go to the emergency room. If I can't pay it I will have you pay for it instead. If they try to get the money from me then I guess I will just have to declare bankruptcy and once again make you pay for it. I hate authority so much that I do the opposite of whatever the authority thinks I should do. If this passes I hope they keep illegal immigrants off of it so they can continue to be free like me. God Bless America.

QUESTION:
How come my name isn't listed on the auto insurance card even though i AM insured?
My parents have bought auto insurance but whenever they send the insurance card (proof of insurance), only their names are on there. However, if you look up our policy number, I AM an insured driver. Why is that? How am I suppose to carry an insurance card? Is it because I'm under 18?-
ANSWER:
There are different KINDS of insureds on a policy. The insurance card, lists the NAMED insureds - the people who BOUGHT the policy, pay for the policy, and get the claim check.Insured drivers are NOT listed on an insurance id card.
You don't actually carry the card - you leave it in the car with you. And yes, you do show it in case of an accident. No biggie.

QUESTION:
Auto insurance - buying it?
I plan on buying a house in the next 3 months due to a divorce. Currently, my future ex and I are getting a discount with my current insurance company since 2 autos are with the same insurance company but the renewal date is due next week. Should I renew my 2007 Explorer Sportrac for a 6 month period only with the current insurance company or wait until I get my house so I can have both house and Explorer with the same company for some type of discount? I'm not sure if a 3-month period is available to me.Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks.
-
ANSWER:
There is no 3 month period for auto insurance, so I would suggest that you keep your current insurance company for the new 6 months, and then once its renewing again next time, get a policy through the insurance company that you have your home with. This way, you will be able to use the auto/home discount for both your auto AND home, and still save some additional bucks.
Now, your auto insurance premium will most likely still be more expensive than what you pay now, since you will lose the multicar discount you are getting for having more than 1 car insured, but its better than nothing.
Congratulations on your home purchase by the way! Its great to hear about ppl actually buying homes these days vs ppl losing them.

QUESTION:
Do I need to buy auto insurance for my used car dealership?
We are just starting out and wonder if our personal car insurance would cover test drives, or our driving the vehicles. It is a sole proprietorship.
We do have a bond insurance and just acquired two vehicles (our first since we are new) and have not been driving them yet because we are looking into insurance.-
ANSWER:
No, personal car insurance specifically doesn't cover that. It's EXCLUDED under every personal auto policy.Sounds to me like you're operating illegally - used car dealerships need to also be licensed and bonded, in every state I've ever worked. And you need that insurance to get the license.

QUESTION:
Auto Insurance when buying New Vehicle?
What is procedure on obtaining Auto Insurance when you buy a new vehicle and have no present insurance account setup?Does dealer offer temporary insurance until you can get quotes from a few companies?
-
ANSWER:
If you know the vehicle you are going to be purchasing, go get some quotes online, or if you know who you will be insuring with - go purchase your insurance first. The car dealer WILL NOT release the vehicle to you until they have solid proof of insurance in their hands.I bought a new car last January - after turning in a company car, so thus I had no personal auto insurance first. I negotiated my price with the dealer, and set up a date to pick up my car. The morning before, I met with my insurance agent, paid for my premium and provided them the year, make, model of the vehicle (if possible, get them the VIN too), and I received an insurance card. Now if you don't know what type of vehicle you are going to purchase - pick a carrier/agent - have their number with you when you go to the dealer. Make sure they will be open to write you a policy when you purchase your vehicle, and while the dealer is getting their paperwork together, you call the insurance company and purchase your policy - it doesn't increase the time you'll spend at the dealer by too much longer.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
30 days to buy auto insurance when having bought second hand car?
i have just bought a second hand car privately, do i get 30 days period to buy auto insurance on it b4 i start 2 drive it on road? or iam not allowed at all? and i havent had any previous auto insurance
oh yes iam in southern california jurisdiction-
ANSWER:
The grace period you are referring to is if you ALREADY have a valid insurance policy in place on another vehicle when you purchase a vehicle. Also, it is no longer 30 days on most auto policies, it is only 2 weeks for the same coverage & 4 days for additional coverage (meaning you other car has liabliity only & you need full coverage on the new car). Also, you need to add the car on the date of purchase to the policy to be covered, the grace period is just the length of time you have to TELL your insurer about it.
Since you do not have insurance, there is NO grace period (where would the insurance come from in the meantime? think about it) and you have to buy a policy BEFORE you drive the car. If you are driving the car now, you have NO insurance & you are driving illegally.
Call an insurance agent first thing in the morning & buy a policy.

I have never been in an automobile accident in 10 years of driving, and I feel that I would rather just not have insurance. From the quotes I have gotten so far average about a month. I would like to know why I am not allowed as a responsible human being to make that choice. The whole "share the risk" aspect of insurance to me just seems communistic.-
ANSWER:
Yeah, well, if you run into me on the road and it's your fault, you better have adequate insurance or plenty of assets for me to take, because you my friend, are responsible for the damage you cause. You don't like it, you don't have to drive.

i've never bought a car in the uk before and i'm not following the principle very well, i mean, you could arrange insurance first, and then the car you want have already been sold to someone else, at the same time, you don't want to be driving it off the forecourt with no cover. so is the best thing to sort it all out at the garage? will the dealer help me to do this?-

You normally put a deposit on the car so it wont be sold to anyone else. Then you arrange insurance to start on the day you collect the car and take the cover note to the garage with you to prove its insured - easy xxx

QUESTION:
Does the new Health Care law mean we have to buy insurance like auto insurance?
If yes, what happens to people who can't afford to purchase insurance? Will they check somehow, like when you get your driver's license or fill out tax forms or what? If people don't have insurance because they can't afford it, will they figure out a way to fine you like they would if you didn't carry auto insurance? Thanks in advance for your help.
-
ANSWER:
If tou can afford, you should buy medical insurance. The health care plan is to protect your insurance: note in many cases insurance can cancel your insurance if you got serious illness such as cancer. In such situation, the government would accept your insurance. This placed your insurance with those who cannot afford any insurance.

QUESTION:
Bought auto insurance the same day accident happened?
I bought FULL auto insurance coverage at 6pm April 25 and then next day when I was walking towards my car I discovered that huge tree fell on it. Will my insurance cover it despite the fact that it happened the same day? (I think tree fell same night about 10.30pm b/c that's when storm passed us by)Or will they try to deny coverage and cancel my policy? It states in "fine print" of the policy is that they can cancel policy for any reason within 60 days of purchase
-
ANSWER:
if they cover a tree falling on the car and not the accident as an act of god they should cover it. From the day you get insurance you are covered.
That doesnt mean they wont cancel your policy after they pay out though.

QUESTION:
I bought auto insurance from another company, do I have to call the old company and tell them?
I got tired of State Farm and switched over to Esurance. I have already paid for a 6 month policy, which started the same day my State farm policy ended. Do I have to call State farm and tell them anything, or will they automatically close my account?-
ANSWER:
No, you do not have to inform State Farm. As you stated you started the Esurance policy on the day your State Farm policy expired. Unless you are on EFT for premium to SF then your SF policy will simply non-renew. Not a mark on your record. Esurance will notify state of your new coverage if that is required.
Just make sure you have adequate coverage, not just state minimums, no med pay, and no underinsured motorist coverage.

QUESTION:
Should we force peolpe that don't drive to buy auto insurance?
Comparing Mandatory Auto Insurance and Mandatory Heath Care Insurance isn't a balanced argument as you have the right to not drive a vehicle.-
ANSWER:
Watch it, some cranium challenged people will say auto insurance is required. They don't stop long enough to think if the requirement includes people who don't own a car or don't drive, or own a care that is registered as "not used". Watch the comments. lol.Besides, auto insurance is a states issue not a fed mandate. Even LTR is monitored and enforced by the state's police through truck stops and weight stations.

QUESTION:
why do people say they are forced to buy auto insurance?
they don't have to. they can drive without it have an accident and loose every thing they might own and still loose their vehicles.-
ANSWER:
Three things about auto insurance:1. It is the federal gov't that is bound by the limitation of powers specified in the Constitution. Mandatory auto insurance laws are state laws, dependent on state constitutions.
2. My state anyway does not actually require auto insurance. It requires that I am able to be financially responsible. So if I have the resources to make good on damage I've caused, no problemo.
3. Mandatory auto insurance of course assumes that A). you own a vehicle, and B) you are driving on a public roadway. Unlike the new health care bill, I am not required to buy auto insurance merely because I have a pulse.

QUESTION:
Do you think it's wrong for the government to force you to buy auto insurance?
Knowing that if you're hit by an uninsured motorist and get your car totalled the motorist will declare bankruptcy and you won't get a dime. Before you say anything, uninsured motorist coverage only applies to bodily injury.-
ANSWER:
Yes, I do... it's legalized racketeering.I feel the same about health insurance or any other program that mandates the use of a government or privately funded agency.
Although most would say it's 'ok', there's a reason why Safe Auto runs those ads. People unwilling to pay for it continuously get it and drop it a month later...While I am not one of those people, nor do I advocate it, I acknowledge that that problem exists.
Automobiles are a luxury. If you don't believe me, check out the tax when next you buy one.
