   I have heard that people have it so i know they exist. they also have been in the papers as they are ment to montor the speed of the driver and driver habits etc.

     The device you refer to that monitors the driver's habits are called Smartboxes. They are combined data collectors and tracking devices, so if your car is stolen, they can trace it, and if you speed, drive erratically, drive at night etc, it feeds that data through to the insurer.

     The devices are not something you can buy in a shop. The insurer fits them to your vehicle as part of your policy conditions. I know that Co-operative Insurance and Coverbox both offer this service and there may be others who do too. When you take out the policy, they will arrange for someone to come and visit you at home or work and fit the box. It is small and out of sight.

     The insurer will start by charging you the basic rates for young drivers, but every three months, they will look at the data fed through from the Smartbox and will reduce or increase the premium based on how safe you have driven for those three months.

      Adding him onto your insurance if he is the main driver is illegal, the insurance company will find out. IF he isn't the main driver I would advise going onto a price comparison website such as confused.com, the cheapest insurance company varys from person to person. After you have found the cheapest quote go to the insurers directly as comparison sites are just middle men.
      If he is the main driver and if you can afford it. I would advise you to buy him a small, slow car for around £500 and put him on his own insurance.

You can get discounts if you take a defensive driving course, 10% off liability and collision. You also get discounts for the car's safety features, as well as owning a home, multi-car, etc.

      If all you are going to have is basic liability insurance, the type of car you drive does not matter. You can have a 1985 Yugo GV or a 2007 Ferrari 599, liability rates will be the same.

      The actual rate you are charged depends on many, many factors, such as but not limited to: your high school GPA, your parents credit score, how long you have been licensed, any accidents you have been in, which company you go with, whether you pay month to month or 6 months at a time, etc.

      This question is asked here a hundred times a day, there are too many factors for anyone other than an insurance agent to give you a quote. The closest thing I can give you to an accurate rate is, when I was 17 I was paying 0 a month for liability.... I got ONE speeding ticket and that amount doubled, and stayed doubled for 2 years.

      I don't know what kind of insurance coverage you need or kind of car you have but I can pretty much guarantee that you're insurance will be no more than 0 a month through the company I've listed below (full coverage - cheaper for liability). Check them out I bet they can help and you should not drive without insurance. They don't penalize you for being young like most companies do. They look at your driving record for the previous 1 year and even there they are fairly forgiving.

      There is no such thing as a "cheap" insurance company for anybody, especially not for young drivers. If you can get insured for less than £2,000 at the age of 18, you are getting a very, very good deal.

      The cost of insurance is entirely unique to you and your circumstances. A company that is cheap for person 'A', may well be expensive for person 'B' - that's just how insurance works.

      The only way to find out which company is "cheap" for you, is to call or e-mail as many insurance companies, brokers and comparison websites as you can. Just like everybody else has to do, every year.

      Sorry, as two people have suggested there's no such thing, HOWEVER it totally depends on all factors surrounding you, a few tips to look out for are as follows...

      Your Postcode is one of the main factors when trying to get insurance, If your own postcode is in a high crime area w/e you can find these lists everywhere on the net, if your in a high crime area you can try get it insured to be at another address.

      Check the usage of the policy your going for, one mistake everyone uses is that they tick social domestic and pleasure, this means you can't drive to work... lol, you have to have a policy that allows you to select "Comuting to a single place of work" or for w/e purpose you need it for.

      Insurance group for your car, if you already have a car then I hope for your own sake it's between the groups 1-4.

      Engine size, regardless of the insurance group a lot of companies also go by engine size thats because generally the engine can be a 1.7 TD or a 1.2petrol, and by default the 1.2 may or will be cheaper to insure.

      The best advice I can give you is......DO SOME RESEARCH otherwise you'll never find out, Yahoo Answers is not the place for this question imo, you need to start reseaching, MoneySupermarket.com, Confused.com, Comparethemarket.com and so on, use these but also find the indepentant firms as well, DIRECT LINE is actually extremely cheap esp for fully comp, I made a big mistake and hope you don't.       You should be very careful how you go about buying insurance; you get what you pay for.,..look for value as well as price...spend a couple of extra bucks and get good insurance rather than "cheap", it could cost you A LOT more in the future.

      Well I have a 99 Mazda Protege. I'm 17 and I only pay about 100 a month. I think the older the car the cheaper the insurance. The cost might also depend on the insurance company. I use USAA.       Forget it as you cannot get classic insurance under 25. That would be a loophole far too big that if it was ever open got closed long ago.
      The insurers know that younge drivers could do this to cut costs and even though you may be genuine it just ain't gonna happen.

      1) THe car: Get an old beater that does not require repair and only carry liability. Better still get a car that rates low on insurance costs (grandma's car vs. a rice rocket)

      2) Get good grades: Good students are better drivers (statistically) so they get a better rate.

      3) NO TICKETS... at your age a single ticket can be very expensive.

      4) Drivers ed (?) in some states you get a discount for taking a drivers ed course... check yours

      5) Check your rates each year. Dont just let your policy auto-renew, go shopping each year for a better rate.

      6) Pay your bills on time. Just like credit cards, the insurance companies looks at your credit score and may factor that into the mix.

      Those are the basic ones that I can think of...

      Hang in there .. in about 8 years or so it will drop if you drive carefully

I always knew insurance was going to be an issue and I have found out it is cheaper to go on other peoples policys... but I want to get my own policy so I can get it down.       Unfortunately, cheap and young new driver is mutually exclusive. And they have no choice but to paint you with the same brush as your peers, because rates are set by risk, and risk is factored by statistics. New driver, male, young all equal risk.

      Do what you can on anothers policy to keep expenses down and get some experience. Don't get tickets or get into any at fault accidents, and try again in a year.

      When you do try, as you found out, avoid the comparison sites on the web. Instead go talk to a local and independent agent.
