Body: Purchasing California auto insurance can be a challenging proposition for many drivers. How much coverage do you really need? How can you ensure that you are getting the best rate? And, what is the difference between collision and comprehensive coverage.

Each of the 50 states has a different policy on the minimum level of coverage required by drivers on their roads. But, most drivers obtain additional levels of coverage based upon their individual coverage preferences and their household budgets in California.

Collision Coverage

Collision auto insurance in California covers issues arising from a direct collision with a car, an object or even a person. This is required in most states to protect drivers on the roads. Each state requires a different minimum level of collision insurance coverage for each driver on their roads. However, most insured drivers choose to insure themselves for more than this minimum threshold. Be sure to check within your state for this requirement to ensure that you are in compliance.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is optional in California. However, most drivers opt some level of comprehensive coverage when purchasing their auto insurance policies. This type of auto insurance protection provides financial assistance to the insured in the event of theft and other issues which are not a direct result of a collision.

For example, if someone were to break into your vehicle to steal a pair of sunglasses you accidently left on your seat, or a shopping bag in the back of your car, your stereo or even your GPS system, most comprehensive coverage plans offer some level of financial benefit to the insured party. Once you file a claim with your insurance provider, they will cover a portion, if not all of the loss, once the insured party has met their deductible limit.

Comprehensive California auto insurance can also cover such issues as a rock hitting your window while driving which results in damage.

What Level of Coverage do I need?

If you have financed the purchase of your vehicle, the lender will often outline specifically what you are required to obtain in terms of auto insurance financing to be in compliance with your lending agreement. But, if you own your car outright, you will have the option of choosing the level of car insurance for your vehicle.

In addition to basic coverage levels, consider the replacement cost for your vehicle, your overall financial risk, and your household budget when comparing auto insurance policies. Most financial experts recommend choosing the best policy which you can afford on a monthly basis, as insurance protects us against things we cannot afford to lose. When you have enough capital and assets working for you where you have become financially independent, you can lower the total amount of comprehensive coverage you maintain. But, until you reach this level, insuring your vehicle and your potential losses is important.

While you may not be required to obtain both collision and comprehensive coverage for your automobile in California, it is recommended to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
With comprehensive auto insurance (state farm), will it cover water damage if you drive through a deep puddle?
My buddy drove through a deep puddle that was unseen, and it flooded the entire car and engine and the car was submerged pretty much. Will comprehensive insurance or just regular insurance cover it? Will insurance buy the car back? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
If the vehicle is flooded, then this would be covered under the comprehensive portion of the policy. If the cost to repair exceeds the value then the insurance will total out the car. They will pay the actual cash value of the vehicle minus the deductible and any prior unrelated damage.

  2. QUESTION:
Is carrying only comprehensive auto insurance legal in Ohio when the car has plates but is not being driven?
I thought that it was required to have liability if the car has plates on it (b/c in the past I have been required to randomly send in proof of insurance through the mail).

The car will not be driven in the next 6 months and my husband askes to have some type of storage insurance put on it to lower our bill. They secretary switched it to comprehensive only.

    • ANSWER:
I suggest you visit a nearby auto insurance agent to assist you. Since I live in Utah I can't recommend an agent in Ohio, but here is an resource that can help you. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Free-Auto-Insurance-Quote.html

  3. QUESTION:
Whats the difference between Comprehensive Auto Insurance and collision auto insurance?
Which do you reccomend and which do i need?

    • ANSWER:
Comprehensive coverage protects you against things such as theft, vandalism, weather damage and if you hit wildlife like a deer while driving, basically things that you cannot control.

Collision covers the repairs of your vehicle if you hit something and are at fault. So if you are in a accident taht was your fault, collision would cover repairs to your vehicle, or if you hit a mailbox.

I would recommended getting both if you have a newer car

  4. QUESTION:
My truck is seven years old. At what point is it wise to drop comprehensive auto insurance and just go with?

    • ANSWER:

  5. QUESTION:
Does comprehensive auto insurance cover rust caused by highway salt?

    • ANSWER:
      No.

That is a wear and tear issue. It is also very common in some areas (such as areas that use a lot of road salt in the winter or places where people live near the ocean).

Comprehensive covers things like: theft, hitting a deer, fire, windshield breaking. These are all things that are sudden and accidental. Salt causing a car to rust takes place over a period of time. It is not sudden and accidental.

Here's some information I found on how to prevent salt from damaging your car. Maybe some of these tips can be used to help keep the damage from getting worse. At the very least, may help to prevent salt from damaging your next car.

  6. QUESTION:
Do most people get liability, collision, or comprehensive auto insurance?
what should the value of the car be before considering getting liability?

    • ANSWER:
Answer from a General Insurance Agent

Most people get Liability. It is required by law.

      The rest is optional

People with a car note, usually have to get the comprehensive and collision coverage because the finance contract requires it.

People with money tend to get all of the auto coverage options available.

Most Insurance Companies and Agents advise you to get everything whether you need it or not. Obviously, the more you pay the more we make.

      Good Luck and Happy Motoring

  7. QUESTION:
Is it possible to get liability auto insurance and comprehensive?
I went ot my insurance agent and she told that i cant get comprehensive by tis self that i would need collision. I was just hoping to save money by cutting the full coverage on my insurance into lialibty and comprehensive only. Is it possible? Or my agent was right?

    • ANSWER:
Well, your agent is wrong. If the car is in a locked storage facility and not registered for road use (you turn in the plates) you CAN get comp by itself, as long as you have a second car on the policy which IS registered and DOES have liability coverage.

Or, you can insure the car for just liability and comp - no collision. Now, if there's a LOAN on the policy, the lender won't accept that - they'll put forced placement coverage on the car, and eventually repo your car if you don't pay the extra 0 or so a month to the loan. But that's not the AGENT'S problem, that's YOUR problem - that's the deal between you and the lender.

If it were me, I'd make you sign off that you understand that deleting collision means there's no coverage for your car in an accident, and it won't fulfill any loan requirements. And it can't be added on, retroactively, after you get that ,000 bill from the lender. But I'd do it, after you signed off. It's not MY responsibiltiy to be sure you comply with your loan agreement.

  8. QUESTION:
How do i get comprehensive auto insurance as a new driver?
I am getting an auto loan from my bank but before i can get anything they require full comprehensive insurance.I called a few companies to get a quote but they said i have to have had my liscence for 6mths to a year before they take me on,
I got my learner's permit back in 2009 but never really pressued getting the actual liscence until i bought my own car meanwhile i was using a relative's car until recently. Now i need to get around work etc.I CANT wait that long How do i get sorted out and what are my best options? HELP ThANKS!

    • ANSWER:
Cars are insured according to the engine size, weight etc. I think all Insurance companies are charging the same amount for similar cars for insurance. You can take either a comprehensive insurance or a third party insurance according to your requirement.,.. So if you want cheap insurance go for third party insurance i.e no insurance coverage for car but in case of accident only the third party (the party who has been affected by your car) will get compenation.

  9. QUESTION:
Does comprehensive auto insurance generally cover damage caused by a squirrel damaging wiring?

    • ANSWER:
yes it does.... i am an agent for farmers insurance...anything besides a collision that damages your car is comprehensive

  10. QUESTION:
does comprehensive auto insurance cover my car if a tree gets blown down and wrecks it?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, comprehensive coverage is "all perils coverage" this means that anything that happens is covered subject to the exclusions. Main exclusions are collision, upset (single vehicle accident) and wear & tear type losses.

A tree being blown over would be a falling object and would be covered. If you have this coverage check your policy or with your agent to confirm what your deductible is, if you have one.

  11. QUESTION:
Does comprehensive auto insurance policy insure against damage/loss to the veihcle resulted from shipping?

Ok, another way to ask the questions is: I have my own comprehensive insurance coverage on the car to be shipped. Do I need to purchase insurance coverage from the shipper (which costs close to 0)?

    • ANSWER:
Shippers are responsible to the amount insured. No insurance with shipper u can pursue with the insurance company. They woulnt pay for damages but if you lost the car they would.

  12. QUESTION:
Will my auto comprehensive insurance cover a wiring fire under the dash of my auto?
when I went to start it, smoke came from under the dash and the starter wouldn't stop trying to start the engine. I had to disconnect the battery.

    • ANSWER:
Read your policy -- most policies will cover RESULTING damage due to fire loss, which means the causation of the fire will not be covered, i.e; a mechanical failure. Example: fuel rail splits and sprays gas over the engine resulting in fire damage to wiring, hoses and paint. The rail, (the cause) is not covered by the insurance policy (though it may be covered under warranty)

  13. QUESTION:
dose comprehensive auto insurance cover my car damaged in a parking lot if some one hit my car and left?

    • ANSWER:
Probably not. You need uninsured motorist property damage coverage. Check with your agent to be sure.

Just realize, a lot of agents will try to talk you out of filing a claim, so sometimes it's better to call the claim reporting number instead.

My husband and I currently own a truck and have an exisiting comprehensive auto insurance policy in Texas. If we buy a new car (thereby removing the truck and adding the new car to our policy but not changing anything else) will the insurance company run his driving record again?

    • ANSWER:
Generally speaking, the only time the insurance company looks at your driving record is when they are about to renew your policy.

  16. QUESTION:
What does Auto Comprehensive Insurance actually mean ?

    • ANSWER:
i work for an insurance company in the auto department. comprehensive insurance is for "other than collision" accidents. a rock from the road hits your car, that's comprehensive, an animal strikes your car, that's comprehensive. weather damage. pretty much everything that would be considered outside your realm of control, is considered comprehensive. but, be warned, hitting a pothole and causing damage to your car that way is considered collision because you collided with the road and had the opportunity to avoid the pothole.

  17. QUESTION:
On auto insurance does comprehensive coverage, include theif?

    • ANSWER:
Theft of your own vehicle? Yes

Theft of personal property in your vehicle? No

  18. QUESTION:
    what is comprehensive auto insurance?

    • ANSWER:
The term comprehensive when applied to auto insurance means coverage for damage other than collision.
(Such as a rock hitting a windshield, denting a bumper by hitting an object, damage caused by theft/fire, etc.)

Comprehensive claims do not count against insurability as much as collision claims do.

  19. QUESTION:
If I report an auto insurance claim under my comprehensive, does it count against me?
Not sure whether to report an damage to my vehicle. I estimate the cost to be about $ 500.00 +. My deductable is $ 500.00. Any info will help :)
Please note: this was not an auto accident.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the state you are in. That is what was told to me by an insurance adjuster in Missouri when I had a table fall into the door of my truck when I was unloading it.

Comprehensive coverage is to cover accidental damage not related to a collision such as fire, hail, theft, falling objects, ect. You DO NOT have to make a claim to your insurance carrier on this, especially if you live in a state where they can raise your rates as comprehensive coverage is not required by law. I would highly recommend not filing a claim regardless if your damage was not caused by a collision and your cost of repair is under the cost of your deductible regardless of the state you are living in.

  20. QUESTION:
What exactly does comprehensive auto coverage cover?
I need to know what type of coverage is collision and comprehensive, as far as auto insurance is concerned.

    • ANSWER:
Comprehensive (in the U.S.) covers losses such as theft, hail, fire, flood, smacking a deer or other animal, cracked windsheild, etc. Collision covers losses like smashing your fender into a fence, running into the rear of another vehicle, some jerk that has no insurance crashes into YOUR car, etc, etc. Liability covers the loss you may do another car or person.

  21. QUESTION:
when should you drop comprehensive and collision auto insurance?
    car is worth 4500.00 tops

    • ANSWER:
It is a personal decision. Most insurance companies don't want to carry full coverage after 5 years of age. The cost of continuing the coverage may not be economical.

  22. QUESTION:
Should I get comprehensive and collision auto insurance, if I am financing a car(not a lease)?
    GMAC, not a new car.

    • ANSWER:
I would be surprised if they didn't require it. You should get it anyway. Nothing sucks like making notes on a wrecked car. And do not waive (refuse) uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Thats what pays you if you get hit by someone with no insurance, or too little insurance. This day and age with illegals and other uninsured motorists on the road your odds of being hit by someone without proper liability insurance are pretty good.

  23. QUESTION:
Will auto insurance rates go up if filing a Comprehensive claim in Texas?
I had windows knocked out and body damage done to two trucks by vandals, the vandals were identified and police report files and charges will be pressed. I carry 00 deductable and damage was in the range of 00 per vehicle.
Any insurance claims adjusters want to comment? PS I havent called my insurance yet, cause I know just making the call will go down as a "claim".

    • ANSWER:
I live in Texas and making a comprehensive claim will not raise your insurance rates as you weren't at fault..

Your rates can only go up from a claim if you were at fault..

  24. QUESTION:
car broken into and laptop stolen - chances of auto insurance covering it?
My car was broken into (back window was smashed) and an expensive new laptop was stolen. I have comprehensive auto insurance, and even the cops told me that auto insurance would cover it. However the insurance claims person says that only car and parts of car are covered. Is this something thats a given fact or is it just that i need to talk to argue with the insurance company?

In response to another question, someone here said that i may need to consult a lawyer and threaten to complainw with Better Business Bureau etc. Would that help? Does it matter whether this incident is called vandalism versus burglary (the car window was smashed into, there were witnesses, was a police report).

Any other ideas to help recover the costs? The value of the good stolen is around 00...

    • ANSWER:
I have already answered this. Only components of the VEHICLE are covered under comprehensive insurance. Your back glass is covered, your laptop is NOT. That's what happens when you leave a 00.00 laptop in your CAR.
P.S. -- to the idiot that told you a lawyer can get this paid under your comp., you are a complete idiot.

  25. QUESTION:
If my car got keyed does the comprehensive insurance require a police report before they processs claim?
My car got keyed all around every panel now will my auto insurance company require me to do a police report in order to process my comprehensive claim?

    • ANSWER:
If you're filing a vandalism claim, then proof of vandalism is a police report.

There is no vandalism claim without a police report. Yes, it will be required.

  26. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
Your insurance is valid in all 50 states (even though it is very doubtful that you will drive to Hawaii). As long as the car is legally registered, and the policy is in effect, you are fine.

  27. QUESTION:
Am I better off not reporting vandalism to my auto insurance?
My back window was smashed out, and I appear to have a 0 deductable for comprehensive insurance. If I can get the window fixed for less than that, is there any point in telling my auto ins?
If I do tell them, will they raise my rates?
Any harm in not telling them?
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
no point your right i payed 165 bucks to have a guy come to house and replace one on a car
i payed same guy 150 to replace van window same day was no need in reporting it to insurance since 500 deductable wasnt payed they no need to know no harm to tel them but why report something if you payed for it to be fix then you didnt need them and even if you had reported it they wouldnt have fix it if they had it would have cost you 500 plus dont have to report any thing you repair

I hate to file a claim if its going to cause a long term increase in my premium. Thanks for any advice from licensed auto insurance agents.
Note - I am in the state of Maryland and my insurance company is State Farm.

    • ANSWER:
Comprehensive claims, under normal circumstances, do not affect your premium unless you submit numerous claims.

  29. QUESTION:
laptop stolen from car - will landlord's home owner's insurance cover it? auto insurance doesnt...?
My car was broken-into and my mac was stolen. I had taken comprehensive auto insurance, but they say that auto insurance wont cover items lost due to vandalism and that it will be covered by home insurance. I live in a rented place and so dont have homeowner's insurance. Would the landlord's home insurance cover it, since the item belongs to the home that is owned by the homeowner?

    • ANSWER:
The most qualified people to answer this question are the people your landlord is insured with, NOT people at yahoo.
Why not ask them and be done with.

  30. QUESTION:
the terms and conditions of bodily injury property damage comprehensive and collison of auto insurance?

    • ANSWER:
This is really something you should take up with your insurance agent as to what specific limits you should carry based on your personal circumstance.

      In a nutshell though...

Bodily Injury and Property Damage are liability coverages

Collision and Comprehension cover your vehicle.

      Here are some definitions:

      Bodily Injury Liability (BI):

Covers other people's bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible. It also provides for a legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you. Claims for bodily injury may be for such things as medical bills, loss of income or pain and suffering. In the event of a serious accident, you want enough insurance to cover a judgment against you in a lawsuit, without jeopardizing your personal assets. Bodily injury liability covers injury to people, not your vehicle. Therefore, it's a good idea to have the same level of coverage for all of your cars. Bodily Injury Liability does NOT cover you or other people on your policy. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

      Property Damage Liability (PD):

Covers you if your car damages someone else's property. Usually it is their car, but it could be a fence, a house or any other property damaged in an accident. It also provides you with legal defense if another party files a lawsuit against you. It is a good idea to purchase enough of this insurance to cover the amount of damage your car might do to another vehicle or object. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

      Comprehensive Coverage:
Covers your vehicle, and sometimes other vehicles you may be driving for losses resulting from incidents other than collision. For example, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals. Pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose. To keep your premiums low, select as high a deductible as you feel comfortable paying out of pocket. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

      Collision Coverage:
Covers damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object. Pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose. To keep your premiums low, select as large a deductible as you feel comfortable paying out of pocket. For older cars, consider dropping this coverage, since coverage is normally limited to the cash value of your car. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

You'll also want to check out Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverages.

  31. QUESTION:
Which coverage, comprehensive or collision, covers damages from others opening their doors into my car?
I recently found a couple of dings and paint scratches on my car. They are likely from people carelessly opening their doors and hitting my car. They are not a result of a car accident with the car being driven (aka moving), nor was it damaged on a road.

Does comprehensive auto insurance covers these damages?

    • ANSWER:
Each ding would be it's own separate claim - since each ding happened at different times. Your deductible would be applied to each one.

Therefore, it's not worth it to make an insurance claim since the damage would be less than your deductible.

If you want to get the dings taken care of, contact a Paint-less Dent Repair (PDR) company in your area.

  32. QUESTION:
What kind of car insurance do I need for a rental, when I DON'T have any current auto insurance?
We are looking to rent a car for a month, and since we are both ex-pats, we don't have any USA car insurance. We've looked up and discovered we should get Collision, Liability and Comprehensive insurance. Where can we get these for cheap? My travel insurance includes a Collision option, but no Liability or Comprehensive (I'm American, my husband is English).

    • ANSWER:
You can buy them from the rental car company.

You cannot get a policy, for a month, for a rental car. You have to buy the coverage from the rental car company - and it's not cheap.

  33. QUESTION:
what exactly is covered when you have full coverage auto insurance?
I have both collision and comprehensive insurance on my car..as i was backing into my driveway I got a little too close and hit the wall..my back fender is scratched pretty bad...is this covered by my insurance company
i kinda figured it make my rates go up, a friend of mine said it would probably only be a couple hundred to fix, was just wondering if it was covered

    • ANSWER:
Well I've heard that if its on private property that the insurance claims MAY not cover it (I don't know if this is true). But anyways if it does cover it, it would fall under collision which you would have to pay your deductible so if you have 0 deductible and only 0 worth of damage then you have to pay the deductible meaning the 0. And most likely your insurance would go up next time you renew the policy. So if the damage is less then the deductible I personally wouldn't do it.

  34. QUESTION:
does personal auto insurance cover rental cars for comprehensive and liability?

    • ANSWER:
Your primary personal auto insurance will carry over to a rental vehicle, but only the coverages you currently carry on your policy. If you have liability only then you would not have physical damage coverage for the rental car. If you carry full coverage then the physical damage coverage will carry over to the rental. Every insurance company is different and it would also depend if you have "standard" or "non standard" (high risk) insurance. Check with your agent for the details.

  35. QUESTION:
how does lender know if you don't have adequate auto insurance?
When you finance/lease a car, the lender requires comprehensive & collision insurance with a 0 deductible. How do they know if you have adequate coverage? Suppose you only have 300/100 liability. Secondly, if they find out what would they do?

    • ANSWER:
When you add the vehicle to your insurance policy, you have to give the name of the finance company. In turn, your insurance company sends them a declaration page showing your coverage. If it's not adequate, they will contact you & let you know. If you don't respond or don't get the necessary coverage that was requested in the contract that you signed they have 2 options: add the necessary coverage to your contract, which makes your payment go up (usually very expensive) or repossess that vehicle due to breach of contract

  36. QUESTION:
how do i know if i have gap insurance? do lien holders include gap?
car financed at subprime lender i have comprehensive insurance auto stolen.. what if i dont file an insurance claim?

    • ANSWER:
The purchase order completed when you purchased your vehicle will show it in the breakdown. Most standard PO forms will have a place for it, so if you don't have it, the form should show a space. Gap coverage has nothing to do with your lien holder, except that they are the recipient of the benefit in the event of loss.

  37. QUESTION:
How to sue my auto insurance company ? Need Legal Help I( am in TX)?
A year ago I was in an accident that was my fault. I had full comprehensive insurance but the car I was driving was not covered and it was not my car. As a result I am being sued now . Someone told me that because I had full comprehensive insurance through them on my car that they should cover me even when i drive another car.. Kind of like when you go to a dealership and test drive a car and if you get into an accident, well your insurance covers you then.

My insurance company has turned there backs on me . Can I sue them because I am being sued ? Please help!

    • ANSWER:
Full coverage does not exist. It's not a good term and causes a lot of confusion. Comprehensive coverage would cover you in the event of a theft, animal related loss, weather damage, or any damage to a vehicle not covered by a collision.

You'll need to read your policy to see what exactly would be covered in the event you're driving a "non-owned" vehicle. The company I work for in Texas would cover the damage to the vehicle you were driving under Property Damage Liability coverage.

Get a copy of the actual policy that your insurance company writes. Look in the section which covers liability insurance, and see if you're covered while driving a "non-owned" vehicle. If so, I think you should call your insurance company back and explain why you think you should be covered. If that doesn't work, I'd contact the Texas Department of Insurance.

If you're policy doesn't cover "non-owned" vehicles.. well.. you might be out of luck.

  38. QUESTION:
How do I make an auto insurance claim for scratches through auto owners?
I bought a used car a few months ago that had a near flawless finish. Over the past few months it's been scratched several times by my nephew on his bike. We've talked and now I need to file a claim with my insurance. The marks are everywhere, back of the trunk, right rear quarter panel, hood, left rear quarter panel.

The problem is, before I knew I could claim damages, I used a touch up kit to cover the scratches and gouges so they are hard to see. But I could still take pictures of them as they stand now and probably get a letter from the salesman, proclaiming the condition that he told it to me in. What else do I need to file a claim with Auto Owners? Yes, I have full coverage, including comprehensive.

    • ANSWER:
I would settle out of pocket or pay for this yourself, each one of these scratches is a separate occurrence... which means for each scratch before your insurance will pay anything you have to pay your deductible for comprehensive/other that collision coverage. Typically this is 0 or so for each scratch... in the end your only going to end up with a higher premium and nothing from your insurance company to show for it.

  39. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
I would suggest thinking about removing collision possibly even comprehensive.

You need to look at it from YOUR financial stand point.

      For collision.....

#1 Do you have enough money that if you would hit a mailbox or another car with your car, and it was your fault, could you afford to pay a deductible and a little more premium on your bill, or have to go out on your own a buy a new car?

      For comprehensive.....
#1 If you hit a deer, or if there was a hail storm, or your windshield broke from a truck in front of you, would it be easier to pay a deductible to get it fixed and pay a little extra premium each month OR would it be easier to just pay everything out of pocket to do the repairs needed.

Also you want to figure out what your vehicle's value is... or approximately is, my suggestion is to go to www.nada.com.

But MOST people that have older cars will remove collision and/or comp. You can have comp w/ no collision and the reason why some people keep comprehensive on the policy without collision is because there are a lot of things that are out of your control that can happen to your vehicle that IF you didn't have comprehensive coverage, you would be responsible to pay to fix the vehicle. For example: THEFT, Vandalism, an act of god/nature (like a deer, animal or bird, a tornado, flood, hail storm), most glass breakage....

You must have liability and medical.

I would recommend keeping the uninsured motorist because that protects YOU in the event that you are in an accident with someone else who is at fault and they have no insurance and cause you bodily injury, then at least you can get bodily injury limits from your policy if that other person has no insurance.... otherwise your bodily injury damage is your problem, not the insurance's problem.

      Hope this helps.

  40. QUESTION:
How many times has your Bank checked your auto insurance?
Im looking to get another vehicle, and the full coverage insurance is just too high. I dont want to take collision and comprehensive becuase the cost is too high, but comprehensive alone is relatively affordable. My question is, will Capital One auto finance call and check my insurance to see if I have full coverage-if so how often do they do this.... and what happens if they find that I only have comprehensive? Will they reposses, has anyone had this happen to them be it Captial One or any other lender?

BTW, If I was to have an at fault wreck, I would still continue to pay my monthly payment because its relatively cheap.

    • ANSWER:
By law, if your car is financed through someone, you must carry comp and collision. Sometimes you can decide the deductible you will pay in case of an accident, and sometimes the bank tells you what they require. That can affect your monthly insurance payment, because the higher your deductible, the lower your insurance payment. The bank can call the insurance company any time they want (and believe me, they do), and the insurance company has to let the bank know if there is ANY change in your coverage (like if you drop collision, for instance).

  41. QUESTION:
should i make a claim on my auto insurance with a twist ?
I pay about 1000 per year on my auto insurance(comprehensive). I had an accident where i struck a curb and the cost is about 2000 to my car ,no property damage . my deductible is about 500. i have a clean record.

how much should i expect the premium to go up if i file ?i am guessing the it might be about 500 ! essentially i will be paying 1000(500 deductible plus premium) plus an accident on my insurance. should i file or eat the 1000 dollers. car is worth 8000.

    • ANSWER:
Just make the claim, that's the reason you have insurance right? They aren't going to make you pay anything if you ask for a betterment. Essentially they will get an estimate and cut you a check for the repair less your deductable. FYI >> I pay 00 a yr. (with a clean record), you have it easy.

  42. QUESTION:
need new auto insurance policy; have history of non accidental damage to rental car
I have been renting cars before, but now I am buying a used car tomorrow for the first time. I am planning to get new policy with AAA for the car insurance. I recently got my driving license. 2 months back, unknowingly I had a non-collision damage to an insured rental car. I think I hit the curb and there was a dent in the car below right side front door. I had comprehensive insurance, so I got away with no problem then. Rental car company(Enterprise) told me that it's OK since I have comprehensive coverage.
Now , since I need to take car insurance tomorrow, do i need to tell AAA auto insurance agents about this incident. I guess if I tell them about it, my premiums will increase. I would appreciate if I can get a quick response.

    • ANSWER:
They will find out anyways since they run your driving record.

If the claim was paid under comprehensive then they thought it was a vandalism claim. Otherwise if you did it, it would be a collision claim.

So, I think you got lucky. Comprehensive would probly not count against you, only collision would. But don't mention it, let them figure it out and let you know.

  45. QUESTION:
Auto Insurance Coverage - How much coverage should I buy?
Next week, I'll be switching to another auto insurance. My previous limits with another company were:

-minimum MD state 20/40/15 for Bodily Injury, Uninsured Motorist, and property damage
    -PIP 00
-250/500 for Comprehensive/Collision, had road service, towing, and rental.
I don't have many assets. I'm a renter and I live from paycheck to paycheck. I have no accidents, no tickets, and no violations for the last 8 years. I'm a cautious driver. I drive a 2003 Honda Civic.
The new insurance company is offering me 9/year for the limits 100/300/100 Bodily Injury Liability and matching for Uninsured Motorist + Property Damage, 250/500 for Comp/Coll, road service, towing, and rentals, PIP 2500.
I've seen different answers that say 100/300/100 would be better for those who own a house and have a better income.
What do you think is a recommended coverage going?

    • ANSWER:
Given the cost of medical car, and the state of our legal system, I think it makes sense to up your coverage. The minimum is pretty much a joke, and won't cover anyone's serious injuries. Let alone if they sue you for pain and suffering. Besides, if they win a judgement, they can attach your wages, and prevent you from ever buying a home.

You should do this anyway, because it's the right thing to do. Besides, the person you may end up covering may be a friend or relative riding in your car as a passenger. Don't let the asset calculation deter you.

I've had at least 100/300 liability ever since I could afford it. Last year I bumped it up to the max, which I believe was 300/600.

  46. QUESTION:
What is the point of getting collision auto insurance?
The law requires everyone to have only liability.
I also have comprehensive incase my car gets stolen.
But i dont think a tree is going to fall on my car for me to get collision.
If someone hits my car their liability insurance will fix it so what does collision do for me?
I thought comprehensive covers me if i hit a fire hydrant..
or it that what comprehensive is for if i hit a wall or run into something?

    • ANSWER:
Well, there are several reasons why you'd want to carry collision coverage:

      1. if you have a car loan, the lender will require it.

      2. If you have a tree fall on your car, that's not collision - that's comprehensive. If you hit a wall, or a fire hydrant, THAT is a collision loss. You'd want collision coverage, in case something happens to your car, that you can't afford to fix or replace your car.

      3. Not only if you hit something, but if someone else hits you, do you want colllision. Maybe your car will be hit while parked. Maybe it will be a hit and run, or maybe the other guy flat out will be uninsured. If you can't afford the ,000 (or whatever) repair bill yourself, you'll be stuck with a damaged car, and no way to fix it.

      So, in summary:

Comprehensive: fire, theft, vandalism, broken glass, flood, hitting an animal, falling objects.

Collision: you driving into something (even a pothole, or a wall, or another car, or a ditch), flipping your car, or someone hitting you (another car, a shopping cart, a bike)

  47. QUESTION:
Are auto insurance deductibles generally per incident or per year?
Is one's auto insurance deductible amount generally for each incident or accident that occurs or is it per policy year? If my comprehensive deductible is ,000, does it make no sense to go through my insurance company for a cracked windshield?

    • ANSWER:
You should confirm that your comp deductible is that high, normally a collision deductible would be 1000.00 and a comprehensive is 500.00. Regardless, check to see if your policy has a windshield replacement deductible. Some companies offer a lower deductible for glass only claims as low as 250.00 or 100.00.

The other thing to consider is a windshield can be fairly inexpensive. Call your local dealer or auto body shop and ask who they use for glass replacement & install. Use them as a referral source when calling for a price, usually that will get you a better deal.

  48. QUESTION:
Just bought 2nd used car (under my name) but boyfriend going to drive it most days. How auto insurance work?
I have full comprehensive insurance for my own car. Going to get a 2nd used car for my bf to drive to work, school etc. So how does auto insurance work? The title/ownership will be in my name but he will be driving it. Does his own insurance cover the new car? Do I have to add him to my own coverage? Just want to make sure we do it correctly. I have AAA insurance and he has AIS if that matters. Also in terms of cost, should he just cancel his policy and I put him on mine, or can he put a car he doesn't own on his own policy?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Get quotes from different insurance companies with following options:
      1. Both of you on one policy. Add him to your current policy and get a quote.
      2. Both of you on different policies. You can still check your personal quote. I think AAA is expensive. (It doesn't matter you are a AAA member, the discount you get is not worth)

Make sure to keep your coverages same when checking with different companies.

I usually check with companies once in 6 months. I go with the lower rate. Most of the insurance companies are competitive and have good services. I would check Geico, State Farm, Farmers, Local Farm Bureau Insurance company. (I am in Oklahoma and I am with Oklahoma Farm Bureau Insurance)

  49. QUESTION:
what does full coverage auto insurance include?
is collision and comprehensive required for full coverage? what about "underinsured motorist" insurance? i need to know everything full coverage includes because im buying my first car.

    • ANSWER:
"Full Coverage" isn't really an insurance term, it is a laymans' term. However, when someone speaks of full coverage they mean the liability coverage that is required by the state and collision and comprehensive coverage that is required by the lender. Everything else is an extra coverage for an extra premium; the uninsured/underinsured, car rental, glass coverage, towing, med payments, and PIP to name a few. Neither the state nor the lender cares if you have any of these other coverages. Do not skimp on the uninsured/underinsured coverage, though. I've seen too many people hurt by not having this coverage.

  50. QUESTION:
How much does liability auto insurance cost in Florida?
I am coming up to 21 years old, and moving to Miami in August for a year with a student visa. I am told that it's very useful to have a car in the USA, and as I am a car owner in the UK with almost 2 years of comprehensive with no claims, I was hoping that I would be able to purchase a car in the USA.

Will this be possible and at what price?

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,

We often take for granted what a convenience our cars are. I was paying a low price for my insurance, but at renewal time, my insurer tried to increase my rates.

My friend sent me a link to this site:

      http://www.rent-assistance.org

They have a free search to compare auto rates from the major insurers. It saved me a lot of money!
