  1. QUESTION:
    Motor insurance?
I drive on my wife's Insurance, (Fully comp) As a named driver. can I drive someone elses car as third party (not named) uk

    • ANSWER:
As long as the other car has it's own insurance cover and you have the owner's permission to drive the car you should be OK.

Unless the other policy restricts drivers (by age, name, etc.) there won't be any problem. Those restrictions are rare but not unheard of so ask to see the policy if there's any question.

Until they receive the renewal policy they will keep the policy in force. Standing the cost of a car crash vs motor insurance claim?
My son recently had a motor accident, we intend to stand the cost of a replacement car (insurance premium would rise a further £2000 for the following year).

Do we have to inform the insurance company of the accident and if we do will this have an impact on his insurance considering the we stood the cost and didn't claim?

The current insurance company seem unwilling to answer the question fully and an independant insurance broker was of little help too. Please help!

    • ANSWER:
ALWAYS inform the insurance company. They get very tetchy if they find out you haven't. My daughter had a total loss. They paid for recovery (it was burned out) but we didn't claim on our insurance and we didn't loose any no claims

  12. QUESTION:
"If i have 2 motor insurance policies on two seperate vehicles, do i have to let the other insurance company k?
"If i have 2 motor insurance policies on two seperate vehicles, do i have to let the other insurance company know if i make a claim against one of the policies, and if so will it affect my no claims and premiums of both policies. As i will be asked when renewing if i have made any claims in the last 5 years?''

    • ANSWER:
It wont hurt to tell them that way you are covering your own back.

If you have your no claims bonus protected you wont loose anything.

Normally you wouldve had to tell them that you use another car and that you have another policy anyways.

  13. QUESTION:
Do I need Legal Cover when taking out Motor Insurance?
Do I need Legal Cover when taking out Motor Insurance? What does Legal Cover actual mean? Would I need Legal Cover if I want to a third party accident claims company?

    • ANSWER:
When you have an accident you suffer two types of losses (for this purpose) - insured losses and uninsured losses. Insured Losses are basically the damage to the car, if you have comprehensive cover - and your insurance company pays these. Uninsured losses are: excesses, injury, time off work etc. Your insurance company is not interested in these.

So you have these losses - what do you do about it? You claim from the driver who is at fault. This could incur substantial expenses, you may have to fight the case to prove liability etc.

Legal Cover provides cover against these losses. The company who does the recovery will in most cases not have to go to court but if they do then the costs are insured (By now all lgeal expenses/ uninsured loss recovery policies contracts should be underwritten - but it never hurts to check).

Legal cover is not compulsory, however it can save you time and trouble if you do have to make a claim.

There are two types - before the event and after the event - if you buy before the event it will cost you about £20.00 - if you buy after the event it will probaby cost you up to 10 times as much. If you go to a third-party claims company then if you do make a recovery they may (not will) charge a percentage of the recovery - and of course you are in the lap of the gods as to whether the company you select is reputable - several high-profile companies went into administration.

I am looking for a motor trade insurance as my renewal date is next month. The present insurance company are the agents and I want to contact the insurers directly to cut the cost. Any one out there with good knowledge of motor trade insurance.

    • ANSWER:
Many insurance companies will only deal through brokers.

Second point. If you deal direct what happens if the insurance company proves awkward - who will help you? Remember the saying 'He who acts as his own lawyer...."

I deal with MMA, Tradex and KGM - and with other insurers for combined cover. You don't say if you just want road risks or wish to cover liability and/or premises.

I am looking for a software / system that automatically generates premiums rates or values after inputting the various variables like age of car, distance travelled, age of driver, No Claim Bonuses , Residential areas and all stuff that affect rating.

Something similar to what the Insurance Call Centres use to give Insurance Quotes online.
I am actually looking for the software that brokers and insurance companies use for use in our insurance company so I would like to get names of software suppliers who supply off the shelf.

    • ANSWER:
There are websites you can go to to input the information and have quotes presented to you, but if you're looking for something you can download to your computer at home then you'd be looking like rating software that insurance brokers/agents use. This software costs several thousands of dollars and you have to show the company that you have a contract to sell insurance for the insurers you want the rates for.

i would like to know what i will be facing if iam caught,, i already know that the insurance woudnt pay for the accident but other then that what can happen with the police and insurance company?

    offence? court? points?

    • ANSWER:
Outside of insurance fraud, if the insurance company finds out that you have falsified an application for insurance, they can go back to the date you started the policy and re-rate you from that time til now for back owed earned premium which could stack up quite fast. You might then be facing collections if you cannot pay the earned premium, and if you cannot pay the premium you could face cancellation for non-payment. You can also face the possibility of the insurance company also non-renewing the policy, even if you could pay back owed earned premium.

  24. QUESTION:
Motor insurance? Considering Ireland is in the EU, can i get my insurance with an English motor insurer?
I'm sick paying over the odds in Ireland for motor insurance. Can i get cover from an English or northern Ireland motor insurer that will cover me in the Rep of Ireland considering the free movement of goods and services within the EU

    • ANSWER:
      Sort of but sorry.... no

Insurers in the EU can do business in any other member state under the 'passporting' rules in the EU 3rd Insurance directive (subject to rubber stamp approval). So from that perspective there is free movement and yes legally you could buy insurance from say Commercial Union in London (or Belfast for that matter as in this context NI and England are the same)

However, you'd still need to buy a policy that covers you in the ROI you can't just buy a UK policy. As much as anything else taxes, levies (for uninsured drivers etc) are different in each country.

Don't forget nearly all the companies who sell car insurance in the UK have a branch or subsidiary in Ireland, for example Commercial Union in the UK and Hibernian (who also do the Irish Tescos Insurance) in Ireland are both part of Aviva. So there's unlikley to be any price difference.

The real reason there is a price difference between the UK and ROI is almost certainly because of the claims experience, this is no different to people who live in London paying more for car insurance than people who live in some little village.

Since in whichever country you buy the cover, the price will be based on where you live... it won't be any cheaper.

Sorry it's not the answer you wanted, but I'm pretty sure that's how it is.

  25. QUESTION:
Can a 17 year old get motor trader insurance?
Im 17, with a full license and I'm interested in buying and selling cars. But would a company give me motor trader insurance? And do you know the name of any of the companys that would?

    Any help would be appreciated

    • ANSWER:
Well, likely you won't be able to get the business license from the state, but even if you could, you're not bondable at 17 (and you need a bond to do this). The insurance is the least of it, but motor trader insurance is EXTREMELY expensive, so if you're in a position to afford it, you can afford to start a shill corporation, and run all the paperwork through the corp to hide your age. Your attorney can help you out with it.

Can my insurance company legally refuse to pay out if nothing regarding failing to give a breath test is in the terms and conditions ?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
YOU SHOULDN'T BEEN DRINKING AND DRIVING. THAT IS HOW PEOPLE GET HURT OR KILLED. Yes the insurance company can refused you claim. You were stupid and you shouldn't have been drinking and driving. Because of people like you my child who was a month old got killed. Now I have to live on without her, because of stupid idiots like you. I am glad that the insurance company refused your claim. Maybe you will learn from this mistake.

  28. QUESTION:

if some1 claims on my motor insurance policy and my compulsory excess is 300£ does that mean i have to pay 300£? i had an accident and it was my fault and it would be them claiming on my insurance i think. also im 3rd party fire and theft...
    cheers

    • ANSWER:
      Basically YES.

If the accident is your fault then you pay the first 300 of any claim.

If it is not your fault then you would pay the excess initially and when your insurance had recovered their costs you would get that back.

  32. QUESTION:
Who will sell motor insurance to a non US citizen buying a car in the US?
I want to buy a car in the US and travel across the country for 2 months but am having trouble finding a company that will insure me. Does anyone know of a way I can get insurance to legally drive a car in the US?

    • ANSWER:
Check with a travel agent in your home country. There are many inusrance companies that will sell you insurance, though you may have to arrange the purchase before you arrive here.

There are no laws restricting the sale of insurance to only US citizens or residents. If you are in the country legally you can legally buy insurance.

You might NOT be able to get a "short-term" policy however. Insurance is sold in six-month policies in most states. A few states require one-year policies. You'll have to buy a full-term policy and then cancel it when you sell or ship the car and leave the country. You'll get a refund of the unearned premium when you do this.

  33. QUESTION:
What makes your motor insurance policy void?
I have recently had an incident with another vehicle where the driver was using their own family car as a delivery vehicle. I thought that you had to have it specified in your policy terms that you would be using your vehicle for work ? Is this the case or am I wrong?

    • ANSWER:
People use their own vehicles for work frequently. Although coverage does depend on the type of insurance the person has, it happens regardless of policy type.

The question becomes one of intent: Does the business assume that people will use their cars for work? If so, the business should extend their insurance to cover that car.

Where it gets iffy is when you are carrying something of great value and it gets destroyed in an accident. Was that object insured by the company or by your driver's insurance, etc.

In the case of the person using their family car as a delivery vehicle, if this is a regular occurance that the company depends on, then your insurance company will probably be contacting that company.

But what if you went home first before the delivery? How about if you got something at work, went home and dropped it off somewhere else on the way back into work the next day?

Don't worry ... the insurance companies will, in the long run, always win.

Bodily Injury and Property Claims are very lucariative although very stressful. You can also try Marketing Rep which deals with agent issues. If you're tired of claims you can also try getting a producers license and work for an agency which is much less stressful.

  40. QUESTION:
People of Ireland! If there was temporary motor insurance, would you buy it?
There seems to me, that temporary motor insurance in the Republic doesn't exist!
Does anyone know a potential reason for this?
Also is it a product that would interest people here?

    • ANSWER:
'temporary' or short term motor insurance would be prohibitively expensive for many reasons, the main ones being.

      a) Admin costs. It actually costs quite a bit to set up a policy, send out the documents, check that the premium has been paid etc. Let's say it costs 30 euro (it's usually a fair bit more) if an annual policy costs 240 euro, that's 210 for the insurance and 30 for admin which works out at 20 a month. Now if that policy was just for a month. The simple insurance cost (see below) would be 210/12 or 17.5 but the admin would still be 30 so the premium charged would have to be 47.5 for the month. Getting on for treble the equivalent premium on a an annual basis.

      b) Average rate. Annual insurance policies are based on the average claims cost in any given year. Summer and winter, car in use and car not in use. Obviously winter months see more accidents than summer ones as the driving conditions are worse. So on a short term basis you'd either have to charge more during the winter or (more likely) the 'winter rate' all year round. Also very few people use their car 52 weeks of the year what with holidays etc, annual policies reflect this in their cost. However no-one is going to buy a temporary policy for when they are on holiday, so the risk rate is much higher and the true 1 month risk rate would not be annual/12 but more like annual/11. Using the above example a 1 month policy would now cost 210/11 = 19 + 30 (admin) = 49 per month. At 49 per month you get less than 5 months cover (240/49 = 4.89) for what a 12 month policy would cost.

As you can see, the math just doesn't really make it worth doing.

There are a lot of other reasons as well, but hopefully the above gives a taste of the economics.

      Cheers

  44. QUESTION:
I'm canceling my motor insurance after 1 month: how much money am I entitled to receive back?
I paid £212 pound, and after one month they are only offering me £60 back! The salesman who rnewed my insurance for this year assured me that, since I was paying the whole amount up front, and not my direct debit, I would get most of the amount back if I cancled early (I told him it was likely that I may need to cancled it after a few months). Is there anything I can do about this?

    • ANSWER:
Did you pay a full year? Is there a cancellation charge, in addition to the cancellation penalty? Was there a minimum premium on the policy?

You'd be entitled to a short rate (meaning, you pay an extra month's premium) cancellation credit.

Calculate the amount due this way - amount paid in, less "earned premium", less short rate cancellation penalty, less cancellation fee. If there's a minimum premium, you subtract the GREATER of the above result, or the minimum premium, from the amount you paid in.

  45. QUESTION:
Does uninsured motor insurance cover damage to a car in North Dakota?
My car was hit in a parking lot, and the person who hit me cannot be found. I want to know if my uninsured/underinsured coverages covers body damage. I only have liability insurance. Is it worth reporting a claim, will my insurance cover getting my car fixed?

    • ANSWER:
Who do you have insurance with? Contact your local agent and just say "I was wondering if my car gets hit in a hit and run, if my current insurance would cover that?" If they say yes, it would cover, then tell them "Okay, then I have a claim." If they say "No," Just say, "Okay thanks!" and hang up.

      Edit:

Foshizel is wrong, in ND all you need is liability coverage. I do not keep collision on one of my vehicles because it's only worth about 0. The liability is to pay for the other guys car if you get in a collision.

  46. QUESTION:
How does an accident that was 100% my fault effect my no claims on my motor insurance?
i have 70% no claims do i lose all of this in one go?

    • ANSWER:
It depends entirely on your insurance companies policies and if you have "protected" ncb.

Some companies will not scrap the full amount of ncb but will knock a percentage off.
If you have protected NCB then again it differs by company but most allow 1 or 2 accidents in a year or x amount in a 3 year period etc.

Check with your insurance company as they are the only ones who can answer fully.

  47. QUESTION:
Why is my car on Motor Insurance Database (MID) while I haven't bought insurance yet?
I've just bought a used car for my son, received the new log book; however, I haven't bought insurance yet, as I intend to keep the car off road at the moment.

But when I checked my car on the Motor Insurance Database (MID), it recognized my car. Apparently it is ok to drive this car, although I haven't bought insurance for it.

Do you think this is ok, or will I be stopped by the police driving this car?

    • ANSWER:
Hi, The MID only shows if they have a record of car insurance on it.
It may be that it hasn't been updated yet since the previous owner sold it, or the previous owner hasn't bought their new car yet so hasn't transferred the insurance to another vehicle, however, even if the previous owner still has an insurance policy on that vehicle, unless you are covered by their policy (which is very unlikely) you will not be insured.

If you are stopped and found to be driving without insurance the police will impound you car. you will also be convicted of driving without insurance which can include a large fine and 6 points on your licence (if the driver has passed their test in the last 2 years they will lose their full licence and have to re-take their test).

Of course even more serious would be if you were involved in an accident, you would not be covered, the other driver would not be able to claim and you could end up being sued plus if someone is injured or God forbid killed, the fact you had no insurance would have an effect on you sentence (yes prison). So all in all I really would advise you not to drive with no insurance. it is just not worth the risk to you or others.

If you need to move the car or take it for an m.o.t. etc before you are ready to insure it, there are short term policies available on-line (from 24 hours cover upwards). I paid around £20 to insure a car I was buying for 24 hours to drive it home.

      Hope that helps

      Danny

  48. QUESTION:
What is the difference between ‘third party only’ and ‘comprehensive’ motor insurance policy?

    • ANSWER:
Motor Vehicles Act requires every owner of a motor vehicle, to ensure there is an insurance policy in existence that will compensate third parties i.e. pedestrians, and anyone else who has access to a public place, who may suffer injury or property damage as a result of use of motor car in the public place. An insurance policy that covers this liability of motor owner, is called 'Third party only', meaning party other than motor owner and insurance company. A comprehensive motor insurance policy, in addition to covering liability under third party insurance, also covers any damage to motor vehicle itself as a result of accidental external means.
