Purchase Auto Insurance

This summer thousands of traveling consumers will face the question, with apologies to Shakespeare, "To purchase the CDW or not to purchase the CDW, that is the question." This issue has been debated for years-- many people are unsure whether or not they should buy the rental car insurance, the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) from the rental company.

The Independent Insurance Agents of America recommends that consumers SHOULD purchase the CDW/LDW, at least for short-term rentals. Here's why:

1. Loss Valuation. The Personal Auto Policy (PAP) covers the lesser of the "actual cash value" of the vehicle or the amount "necessary" to repair or replace the damaged property. Their rental agreement may very well contractually obligate you to reimburse the rental company for the "full value" of the vehicle. The PAP also does not pay for any "betterment" (increased value of new parts replacing old ones) of the vehicle, nor any "diminution" of value (if the market value of the vehicle after repairs is less than that before the accident).

2. Loss Settlement. As implied above, there may very well be disagreement over the value of the vehicle or the amount charged for labor and materials to repair it. Your auto policy's Appraisal clause may be invoked with its accompanying costs. More importantly, the insurance company has the right to "...inspect and appraise the damaged property before its repair or disposal." However, the rental company, unlike you, is not contractually obligated to the insurer...it may choose to make the repairs immediately, potentially resulting in a lack of PAP coverage because of failure to comply with this contractual condition. In any case, buying the CDW typically allows the renter to "walk away" without the headaches involved in managing and adjusting an auto claim.

3. Loss Payment. The rental agreement may require immediate reimbursement for damages, and it is customary practice for the rental company to charge your credit card. This can create a significant debt, "max" out the card's credit limit (perhaps shortening a vacation or business trip), and could result in litigation, etc.

4. Loss Damage Waivers (LDW). Rental agreements often make the renter responsible for any loss in value beyond normal wear and tear, regardless of the cause and regardless of fault. In order for your PAP to respond, you must insure at least one vehicle for both collision and other-than-collision (often called "comprehensive") coverage. If not, your policy will not respond to rental car damage and loss of use claims.

5. Indirect Losses. You will most likely be held responsible for the rental company's loss of rental income on the damaged unit. Your policy probably has limited coverage for these charges.

6. Administrative Expenses. The rental contract may make the insured liable for various "administrative" or loss-related expenses such as towing (e.g., one insured was charged for a 230-mile tow- ouch!), appraisal, claims adjustment, and storage, etc. Some of these expenses may not be covered by the Personal Auto Policy.

7. Other Insurance. The PAP says that it is excess over: (1) any coverage provided by the owner of the auto, (2) any other applicable physical damage insurance, and (3) any other source of recovery applicable to the lossa" including travel policies, credit card coverages, etc. The potential controversy over who pays for what is painfully obvious and could result in litigation. Keep in mind that many states have statutes, proprietary policy forms, and/or case law precedents that may govern this and other rental car exposures.

8. Excluded Vehicles & Territories. The PAP normally does not provide physical damage coverage for motorcycles, mopeds, motor homes, or other vehicles that are not private passenger autos, pickups, vans, or trailers. In addition, use of covered vehicles is limited to the U.S., its territories and possessions, Puerto Rico, and Canada (the rental agreement may also exclude operation outside a specific geographical area). If you rent a trailer (U-Haul, camper trailer, etc.), the coverage is limited to 0.

9. Excluded Uses & Drivers. The PAP may have limitations on use of vehicles that are not otherwise excluded by the rental agreement CDW or LDW. The PAP also may include an exclusionary endorsement for certain drivers or may apply only to designated individualsa"the CDW will probably also only apply to certain individuals, but operators for which no PAP coverage is available may be afforded protection under the rental agreement by adding them as designated drivers.

10. Additional and/or Future Costs. The PAP will most certainly include a deductible in the range of 0-0 or more. In addition, payment for damage to a rental car may result in a significant premium increase (if not nonrenewal) via surcharges or loss of credits. Although most CDW/LDW fees are considered outrageous, if not unconscionable, we advise you to purchase the CDW/LDW for short-term rentals. If anything, this will give you peace of mind while on vacation or business, and it could save you from a lot of inconvenience, and lost time and money.

Other Tips:
a When you rent a vehicle, you may want to look at the rental agreement in advance in order to determine your contractual obligations for damage...a few rental car companies post this information on their web sites. Here is a listing of several national rental car company web sites:

Final notes to consider when renting a car:
-- Be sure to inspect the rental vehicle for existing damage to the interior and exterior and get their acknowledgement of such damage in writing before leaving the premises.
-- Be sure to take proof of insurance with you on your trip.
-- Carry an inexpensive disposable camera with you on your trip to document existing damage or damage that may occur while using the vehicle.

If I purchase auto insurance from AAA, am I automatically enrolled in AAA roadside assistance?
When I purchased AAA auto insurance last year, I was sent an AAA membership card with an explanation of benefits. Now that my policy is up for renewal, AAA membership sent me another card with a bill. What gives?

    • ANSWER:
Jordan get it and if possible put other members of the family on it and spouse.

Now, if you work 30-40 miles away from your home, you might want to get the 50 miles or more AAA roadside assistance.

Once I was about 40 miles away from home when my car stalled in a 100 degreee heat. I had roadside assistance, BUT it was way over the mileage. So if I wanted my car towed, it would cost 0!!!!! So I got the more mileage coverage. It is cheaper and better than paying extra and then a taxi tooo boot.

  3. QUESTION:
When you purchase auto insurance are you insuring the driver or the vehicle or both?
Here's the situation. I have a 15 year old son who is about to get his provisional license. His mother, my ex-wife, and step-father want to buy him a car. They will buy it, they will be on the title, they will be the owners. If they insure the car in their own name, is there a separate policy for my son as the driver? In other words, could I add my son to my insurance policy and he be able to drive "their" car? How does that work for my two other vehicles? And how does that work for their other two vehicles? Obviously, there will be times that he'll need to drive something other than this car that they are buying for him.

    • ANSWER:
both driver and vehicle are covered on policy
your son should be covered on the car that he will drive most often and added to the family policy of his mother and step-father because they are the custodial parents and their name is on the title of the car
since he does not live with you, he will be covered if you give him permission to drive your vehicles

  8. QUESTION:
if some states do not requiure you to purchase auto insurance?
who then will become liable if you are in an accident that the uninsured driver caused, and if you are not required to have auto insurance how does that effect you if you are traveling from state to state.

    • ANSWER:
The person who is liable is the one who caused the accident. The fact that one doesn't have insurance does not relieve them of financial responsibility if they cause a car accident. If a person refuses to pay for damages they cause, the person whose car was damaged can file a lawsuit, and if they win, can potentially garnish the defendant's wages or bank account, etc. Some states require liability insurance so that people don't have to endure this process.

If you are driving in a state that requires that you have liability insurance, then you need to have it (even if your home state doesn't require it). If you are stopped and do not have evidence of liability insurance, you will be given a citation.

The same would hold true, for instance, if you lived in a state that allowed dark tinting on your windows. If you want to drive legally in a state that doesn't allow tinting, then you'll need to have the tinting removed.

  10. QUESTION:
Why do illegal aliens think you can purchase auto insurance after the fact to get your vehicle covered?

    • ANSWER:
As mbrcatz & Tom have stated your assumptions about illegal aliens are just that assumptions. And from several other questions you are asking and some of your responses it sounds as if you have assumptions about several other groups. I am sorry that you have apparently learned to judge others so harshly based on erroneous information. Why don't you take the time to truly inform yourself without bias. There are all types of people -- good & bad -- in every group. No one race or ethnic group is superior to any other. How about reading some of Gandhi's teachings?

      Good Luck to you.

Other than that it is your desire and situation. bare minimum i ever suggest is 25/50/25 Liability ,000 Medical and 25/50/3.5 Uninsured Motorist. 13. QUESTION:
I live in BC, I have my L, can I myself purchase auto-insurance without a parental consent?
I dont have a car yet, but Id like to know if i can purchase my own insurance on a car, so that way my parents dont have to,cause they dont want me to have a car yet :/

    • ANSWER:
If your parents don't want you to have a car yet, then listen to them and don't buy one. You can more than likely get insurance without their help, however you won't be able to drive the car without their help, and why would you want to disobey them?

  14. QUESTION:
What happen if I do not purchase auto insurance when I rent a car?

    • ANSWER:
You are responsible for any and all damage that happens to the rental while it's in your possession. Cracked windshield, vandalism, back into a pole, etc. You will pay for all of it. Sure if you want to use your current insurance to cover you, you have that option. But do you want your insurance to go up and stay up if something happens? If you hit a brick wall, everything is taken care of with rental coverage by the rental car company. Your insurance company doesn't even have to be contacted because they aren't paying out anything. But most companies only charge -20 a day for full coverage, meaning no matter what happens (except maybe in cases of DWI and such) the rental company pays for it. Also if you don't take coverage you could be held liable for "loss of use" which means every day that car cannot be rented due to damage or anything else, the rental company can charge you until it's fixed.

I bought a 2006 auto a couple weeks ago and when I called my insurance co. to add it, they said they could add GAP insurance, too. (which I need) Now they are saying they can only add it to a NEW car, not used. Anyone know if I can purchase strictly a GAP policy to cover my car? 24. QUESTION:
How is auto insurance (a contracted business service within a capitalist economy) legally enforceable?
How can a government, who supposedly stays as far out of a capitalist economy as possible, enforce that you purchase auto insurance? Isnt that a consumers right to buy or not buy?

One could argue that the privilege to drive at all is granted by the government, and you should abide by their requirements. But by that logic, wouldnt having insurance first be a prerequisite before you could get licensed?

    • ANSWER:
First.. I might be ignorant but I thought the USA was the first capitalistic country of the world, so by "that logic" how can their government try to stay "out of it" as much as possible?? If a country is capitalistic, you'd think that it is because of the government that it has and nothing else.

But anyway, call me an idiot or a dancing fool (I am dancing right now..) and here's to your question.

It is all about not being able to save up 10 grand, isn't it? Or is it all about having to show off your masculine attributes by having a car that's flashier than mine? Or a mixture of both and who knows how many more ridiculous factors
Think about it. I mean.. how difficult is it to get car insurance nowadays?
If you are able to buy a car with your own money, maybe you don't have anything to prove and so you just need a car for transport.. you know.. something that's 10 years old will then do.

You don't live beyond your means as you have a brain and can use it and so there's plenty of cash in the bank. After all there have been years of plenty (haven't there?)

So you are now buying something that hasn't had a tough life, not very sporty at all and not too fashionable but sound, it won't cost you the earth as it isn't fashionable and so with not even 3 grand you get something that's done 27.000 miles and has service history.

Maybe get some new tyres and brakes as it's been garaged for the last 9 years and the tyres cracked and the brakes got a bit glazed.. give it a full service and a new battery. Maybe it'll be another 00.. so..newly serviced, spanking new tyres, brakes wow.. it'll serve you for the next 10 years now won't it. For less than 5 grand.

Now you can get liability coverage for it. Get medical coverage for your self and passengers and that's it. You don't need full coverage.
You are a good driver so you have never had a claim in the last 15 years and so your insurance will now cost you about .50 a month.
That's peanuts.. most people you know spend that much on BEER in just a week end.. but no..

Maybe your insurance il 5 a month because you claimed 3 times in as many years and have no money saved up to buy the latest, flashest model and so in the end it isn't your fault but the government's.

But this I mean in general.. not especially YOU..

  25. QUESTION:
How does auto insurance work when you "loan" your car to another?
I have been thinking of "loaning" my car (which I own) to my 87 year old father. I would then lease a vehicle for myself. Then at the end of the lease period (let's say 3 years) if he is no longer driving, the car returns to me. Can he purchase auto insurance on himself and the car or does it fall upon me and my policy? My father has an excellent driving record and so do I.

    • ANSWER:
Call your insurance company to see if you can add him to your policy or if he would be covered under yours. Each state is different so ask them. And GO DAD!! 87 and an excellent driving record, those 2 things don't usually go together.

  26. QUESTION:
How are these people comparing auto insurance to healthcare insurance? Isn't it painfully obvious?
if you don't want to purchase auto insurance you simply don't buy a car?

    • ANSWER:
They don't understand the Constitution. It belabors the obvious why comparing the "individual mandate" to compulsory auto insurance under state laws is specious. First, unlike the individual states, the federal government does not have a plenary police power to enact laws solely for public health and safety; thus, the comparison is legally impracticable. And second, states variously compel auto insurance only for citizens who seek driver's licenses and/or who drive on public roadways. That is, insurance is a condition precedent to being granted a privilege. Thus, the comparison is theoretically feeble as well

  27. QUESTION:

  30. QUESTION:
Would giving a driver's license to an illegal in NY also require them to purchase auto insurance?
CA DMV law requires motorists to prove they have auto insurance. If you do not pay for it monthly, the company notifies the DMV, and the license is revoked. Have you ever known an illegal to get auto insurance? You hand them a license, I guarantee they are going to abuse it, as it is a major form of ID and required for many public services. They come in illegally, and you and I both know this, so what makes you think they will adhere to a law requiring them to pay a monthly insurance fee? But this isnt about right vs. wrong, insured vs. uninsured. This is about the dems wanting the latino vote. Enjoy.

To my inevitable detractors who are going to say that many illegals have auto insurance, I have this to say:

    Lies.

    • ANSWER:
Nope, I lived in California for 20 years and there were tons of uninsured motorists with driver's licenses. Some politicians in California actually favor allowing illegal immigrants to vote! Go figure!

A driver's license for these people just legitimizes their illegal presence in the U.S. Deal with the problem instead by requiring immigrants to enter the country lawfully - or risk DEPORTATION.

I get tired of all the sob stories of deportation which gloss over the fact that the people being deported aren't supposed to be here, have been consuming social services for years and deliberately avoided entering the country the correct and legal way.

In summary - don't give them driver's licenses or free social services - they are not entitiled to them!

  31. QUESTION:
Auto insurance online purchase, what next? ?
I wanted to know if I purchase insurance over the phone or online would I have to show my car to a representative, or our they going to come out? Someone told me they only come if u have a claim. Is that true? What about if u have a custom?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, most will ask you to come into an inspection station or send someone out to look at your car.

  32. QUESTION:
Is it true that you must have full coverage auto insurance when you purchase a car with a loan?

what about a small loan under 4k for a used car?

    • ANSWER:
"full coverage" can mean many things. It is true that lenders require both collision and comprehensive coverage and your state requires at least liability so you will need those 3 coverages. It doesn't matter what the car is worth or the loan amount.

  33. QUESTION:
Turned 25 yesterday and paid for 6 months auto insurance policy?
I have a quick question i purchased auto insurance back in August 2010 for a 6 month pay off. Well i turned 25 yesterday and i checked my new quote now being that im 25 my insurance dropped about 50% for my new quote. Now one of my co-workers said that since i turned 25 and have 3 months left on my insurance that i should be getting half of what i paid back so i guess my question is this true?

    • ANSWER:
No. When you have an existing policy, your rate class doesn't change during that entire policy year. You have to wait until the policy renews.

It's worth it, though, to call your agent and ask them to cancel and rewrite the policy right now, to take advantage of a 50% rate decrease.

  34. QUESTION:
Is it legal in CA for a used car dealer to sell you auto insurance?
i purchased a used car, and the used car dealer put in the contract that I was also purchasing auto insurance thru them...but i wuld get a refund of those premiums when I provided a copy of my own insurance. I never signed any other ionsurance forms with them. i did buy my own insurance later. But, is it legal for the used car delaer to sell me insurance?

    • ANSWER:
absoutely. Its called an insurance binder.

Furthermore, it IS illegal to sell you the car without insurance. So the choices were (1) sell you the car AND insurance, make a deal on both, or (2) Sell you neither insurance NOR the car and let the deal walk. Obviously they took the deal and so did you.

Why would you question whether this is legal or not?

  35. QUESTION:
if someone purchases auto insurance hours after a wreck will it cover them?
i was driving down the road and someones tire came off there car and hit my car.. it appears that they did not have insurance at the time but purchased it hours after the accident, because the driver stated that he had isurance the police allowed him to bring proof to the courthouse. no tickets or anything. well his proof shows he has coverage because he bought it that same day, the insurance co, says they will not cover my car because it was purchased after the wreck. is this legal?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, his insurers dont owe you anything.
If insurance was retroactive nobody would get it, they would just wait to have a crash!
Btw it isn't illegal to buy insurance after having a crash, what's illegal is driving without insurance which is a different thing.
Your course of action would be to get a lawyer and sue the person, maybe your own insurers might be able to help if you have bought legal coverage.

  37. QUESTION:
I just purchased a auto insurance policy a few days ago. Can I cancel and go with another company?
At last minute, I had to get auto insurance with Esurance which I hate. But I really had no other choice. Can I cancel with them and go with another company that will give me a better deal?

    • ANSWER:
You might be able to cancel it without any fees if you just signed up for it a few days ago. If you have found a cheaper rate at another company, then I would go ahead and cancel even if you have to pay a fee. There is nothing worse than over paying for your auto insurance. That's exactly why it is so important to do your research and compare quotes from atleast 3-5 different insurance companies before you decide who to sign a policy with.

  38. QUESTION:
How soon do I need auto insurance after getting my Driver's License?
I'm going to be getting my Drivers License for the first time in a week (I am 16), and I was wondering how soon after I get my license do I need to have auto insurance to drive legally? I'd like to be able to drive the day I get my license, but my parents don't want to add me to their insurance plan beforehand with the possibility of me failing the exam. Is their any kind of grace period that allows me to drive the day I get my license so I can wait until after I complete the test to purchase insurance?

    • ANSWER:
This is weird..... I can't remember how I did it.

      Either.....

      A. You are suppose to be insured already because you are operating it with a permit

      or

      B. The vehicle just needs to be insured in general, and when you get your license you can be added to the insurance immediately. Your name needs to be on the policy before you can drive alone though.

  39. QUESTION:
Has anybody dropped their auto insurance or home owner's policy to save money?
Some states allow you to prove "financial responsibility" instead of purchasing auto insurance. If you don't have a mortgage, nobody will force you to buy homeowner's insurance. Has anybody done it? How does it work? and would you recommend it? I think insurance -- any insurance -- should ONLY be purchased if it is a good deal financially, and if not, why should you if you are willing and financially able to take the risk yourself? Shouldn't it be a goal to become self-sufficient whereever possible?

I would like to hear your comments.

    • ANSWER:
Hi again, your friendly insurance guy again. :)

Plenty of people drop their insurance to save money. Is it a good idea? That depends.

Each person's situation is different. Some people have the financial means to self-insure. Insurance is something a consumer purchases to push risk away from himself or herself. If you have the means to recover from any loss, no matter how severe, you probably don't need to insure against it except as a convenience.

The thing to keep in mind, however, is that the real risks consumers should use insurance to push away from themselves are the BIG risks, not the small ones. Health insurance, for example, is at its most powerful as a ward against the risk of having to pay for the expense of severe, long term, debilitating types of illness that cost incredible sums of money, like needing dialysis for the rest of your life, for example. Sure, it's nice to have the co-pay instead of the full cost of the checkup, but that's not the real risk health insurance is protecting you from. Having to pay for a few checkups a year probably won't render you a financial wreck. Paying for three years of chemotherapy might.

In the end, what it boils down to is this:

Most people will never be in position to need the full benefits of the insurance they purchase, and that is a good thing. That's not nexessarily a reason to cancel it. People DO get cancer. People's houses DO burn down. People DO get into car accidents and get sued for millions of dollars. Ask yourself if you're prepared to look yourself in the mirror some day and say:

"Well, I guess I was wrong, it actually COULD happen to me."

      Or worse, to your family:

"I'm sorry, I was wrong, I wish I had kept the insurance but I didn't."

As a person in the industry, let me tell you: Occasionally the phone rings at the agency and that second guy is on the other end of the line and the conversation goes like this:

"Can I get the insurance back so it will save my family?"

And then one of us has to try to figure out how to tell someone who's going to die that there's nothing we can do to help him any more. You have no idea just how awful it is to get that call.

So yes, you can cancel your insurance to save some money. Please decide if the risk you take by doing so is the right choice, and choose wisely. If you have the means to self-insure, by all means make whatever choice you wish. If not, be cautious and consider the wisdom of erring on the side of discretion.

  40. QUESTION:
Can I rent a vehicle without auto insurance?
I do not own a car at this time. I will be renting a vehicle to go out of town next weekend. I assumed that I could purchase insurance through the rental agency. After reading the description of the Damage Waiver (which is available for an additional charge), I see that it is NOT insurance. Am I able to rent a vehicle without my own auto coverage? How do I go about this? Please site sources for your anwswers. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Most major car rental companies will provide you with liability coverage on your rental! You may have to pay extra, but they do it all the time! It is not required that you own or insure a car before you can rent one! There are many people (mostly in large cities like New York) who do not own a car and when they need one, they rent!

  41. QUESTION:
Does the new Health Care law mean we have to buy insurance like auto insurance?
If yes, what happens to people who can't afford to purchase insurance? Will they check somehow, like when you get your driver's license or fill out tax forms or what? If people don't have insurance because they can't afford it, will they figure out a way to fine you like they would if you didn't carry auto insurance?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    • ANSWER:
If tou can afford, you should buy medical insurance. The health care plan is to protect your insurance: note in many cases insurance can cancel your insurance if you got serious illness such as cancer. In such situation, the government would accept your insurance. This placed your insurance with those who cannot afford any insurance.

  42. QUESTION:
When adding a new car to an auto insurance policy, you need to state the purchase price, how is this used?
If I got a good deal on a car and it is actually valued at much higher, should I write the market value or the actual price I paid. The difference is considerable, since I bought it from a friend.

    Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
I've never seen a carrier ask that... they usually just use the VIN to determine the value. But just using the VIN can be inaccuate as it does not account for any options on the vehicle. Perhaps this is why they are asking.

In any case, I can only see this information used to determine what to charge for comprehensive and collision coverage (damage to your vehicle). So giving that low, low number should work to your advantage. They _won't_ use this amount if they ever have to pay out on your vehicle is it's a total loss... the policy states they pay the "Actual Cash Value". Again, they _will not_ use what you paid as one vehicle does not make up a market value.

To go back to why they want the info... I still am not sure why they would want this info. I mentioned above to better understand its value but what someone paid for a vehicle is not a good indicator (which goes back to why every carrier I know of just uses the VIN). People pay way to much for some vehicles (bad credit adjusts the price, etc) and other people way too little (bought from an uncle for , etc).

You may want to ask your agent how they use this info and/or why they ask.

  43. QUESTION:
Is it legal to pay for referrals in the auto insurance industry?
I want to pay people for referring me a customer who purchases an auto insurance policy from me. Is this legal? Are there any detail I should know about before starting this?
    I'm in California.

    • ANSWER:
I was licensed as an agent in 26 states and it was never legal in any of them. Be very very careful. Check with the department of insurance in your state.

  44. QUESTION:
What should I be looking for when purchasing an auto insurance policy?
What do you guys think of "Infinity Insurance Company"?
I received a really good quote through "800 insurance"
    What do you think John?
    Yeah I live in SF

    Thank you everyone.

    • ANSWER:
I used to work for infinity as a claims adjuster. Not a bad company. Read your policy. Your agent may lie I've seen it too many times, just read your policy. Most important parts are collision to cover your vehicle. You usually pick none, 0 ded or 00ded. That's up to how old your car is and whether or not you have a lienholder that requires collision. Lower ded. costs more than higher ded.
Second is liability. If you are at fault for an accident, it pays the other guys property damage and medical bills up to a certain limit. Minimum limit in CA is k property and k liab. Again, more coverage costs more, but if you get too little and do a LOT of damage, the other people can still sue you.
Hope I helped. Post any other questions you have and I'll check back later.

  45. QUESTION:
North Carolina auto purchase and insurance laws...??
My mother, who lives in Florida, wants to buy a new car for me before I start commuting for school again. The vehicle I have now isn't very reliable anymore, to put it nicely. My mother's credit is impecable. Her Beacon score is over an 800. My credit is extended and although not bad, not nearly good enough to get the same deal she can on APR. So, the dealer has suggested that she buy the car outright to take advantage of the low APR. Adding me to the loan will not benefit her, at all! Problem is, NC has a "Straw Purchase" law. Now Im not sure what the exact contents of the law are, but I know it means that one person is not supposed to buy a car for another. Also, there is a law in NC that the vehicle insured, has to be driven by AND registered to the same person. So, I cant insure a car that my mother bought for me. And in NC, a dealer can't sell you a car unless you have insurance! How do I get around this?? I have to get a new car and my mother is not moving to NC anytime soon!

    • ANSWER:
You can get around it if she buys it. My brother lived in SC and my parents in another state, and both of their names was on his car, their credit was better, so better rates also, just both names was on the title and registration. But the insurance was in his name only...no big deal. NC can't tell you that your mom can't buy you a car...that's crazy! Go to FL and do it. Buy it down there, then later on transfer everything to the "great state" of NC! Just make sure both your names are on the loan and registration!...Let the goffy NC dealer lose a sale!! :D

  47. QUESTION:
are u.s. citizens required to purchase mexican auto insurance before entering Mexico?

    • ANSWER:
      Driving Into Mexico

An automobile permit is required when driving into the interior of Mexico beyond the border cities. The permits, good for up to 180 days, may be obtained at the border after the tourist card has been stamped by Mexican immigration officials. A fee must be paid by the vehicle’s owner using a major credit card on whose face the word "bank" appears. Vehicle Title of Ownership is required. If the vehicle owner is not in the party, written permission from the owner for a specific time period must be presented. The individual to whom the car permit is issued will have his tourist card stamped to that effect, and it is mandatory that he accompany the auto and surrender the permit upon leaving Mexico.

Auto tourists must stop at Mexico’s Federal Inspection Points located on all principal highways to the interior, usually about 12 miles from the border. There the auto permit must be presented for inspection, and baggage inspection may also be required.

      Mexican Auto Insurance

According to Mexican civil statutes, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle in Mexico without auto mobile insurance issued by a Mexican insurance company. In the past, most U.S. insurance companies offered provisions to adjust claims arising from auto accidents in the immediate border cities of Mexico (Endorsement 74). Although that endorsement may still be carried on U.S. policies, Mexican authorities no longer recognize it, and their law is explicit: Drivers must be covered by Mexican insurance. Auto accidents are considered criminal offenses in Mexico, and regardless of fault, involved vehicles are usually impounded.

Short-term Mexican auto insurance is available from numerous agencies and travel services on the Texas side of the border.

Quite a few years ago, my Father-in-law spent a night in jail because he didn't have insurance.

  48. QUESTION:
Can you name a place in so. California where I can purchase minimum legal auto liability insurance?
I would be greatly obliged if you didn't limit your answer to something like "contact your insurance agent".

For one, I don't have one yet, that's part of the problem. I currently have neither a car nor insurance. For my first car, I want to buy a car from one of the many people selling their used cars in my metropolitan area. But without insurance, I cannot drive the car home or even test drive it.

I would like to buy the minimum liability insurance that is required by California law BEFORE I choose and buy a car so that way I can go to nearby cities test driving cars, and drive back the one I buy.

I have tried shopping online for insurance. I went to all the insurance companies that are on TV plus several others. I came across two issues 1) they base the insurance on what type of car you have, and I do not know which one I am going to get yet, 2) they want to sign me up for complete car and driver's insurance, even though they claim to let me customize my plans.

I do not qualify for the state liability insurance for low income drivers.

Can you specifically name a place where I can walk in and purchase only auto liability insurance?

    • ANSWER:
Without a car they can't quote you a rate or sell you insurance. It's based on the type of car and written against the specific car not the driver. Test driving the cars is fine as the owner should have it insured. Then when you find the one you want to buy take the information to an agent and purchase insurance against it in your name.

    Hedging.

    Passing risk to someone else.

    Risk premium.

    Systematic risk.

    a and d

    • ANSWER:
Insurance, very simply, is the transfer of risk to a third party in exchange for a premium. So when you buy auto insurance you are "passing risk to someone else".
