Short Term Car Insurance

Planning a summer holiday this year, for many, will be a tough task. With money being tight there's a need to make sure that every penny is accounted for and goes to good use. Many people are thinking of staying at home this summer as opposed to going abroad purely because they cannot justify the expense. On the surface it would appear that this is just more doom and gloom to add to the already depressing landscape, but there is a silver lining.

I'm a die hard optimist and try to see the good in everything and try to salvage an opportunity from even the most difficult or trying situations. So naturally I've looked at the current economic climate and wondered how to make the most of it. I've also looked at who might benefit in a rather unexpected way from this situation and discovered a few interesting things.

Walking down the aisle - No, I'm not talking about getting married, an expensive business and not for me to even contemplate here, I'm talking about shopping aisles. With every aspect of a household budget having to be looked at discount supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl are porting a boom in trade.

There are areas that can be cut out completely like trips to the cinema, magazine subscriptions or even trips to the gym but the one thing we'll always need is food. The discount supermarkets then, with their cheap alternative brands, are the ideal way of buying the same products as you normally do but for less money, as much as half sometimes.

Wheels for the weekend - Another way that people are saving money is by cutting down on things that they normally take for granted all the time. Changing a broadband tariff to a lower rate and using the internet less and only using the phone at certain times are both way to continue using a service but decreasing the expense for that use. Short term car insurance is another.

Short term car insurance offers a way to cut down on one of the biggest bills of the year while still being able to use a car when you need to. For people with a garage where they can keep a vehicle off the road it may seem ideal but there is also another winner, the holiday maker.

As I've already mentioned there will be people looking to stay at home for the summer holiday this year and static caravan parks and camping sites are reporting an increase in business. They are one of the winners then in these tough economic times. But consumers; holiday makers, are also benefiting.

One of the drawbacks of a camping holiday is that it can be a logistical nightmare, especially if children are involved and the economy of even the family size car just cannot cope with moving all the food, equipment and clothes that are required to make the holiday as comfortable as possible. That's where short term car insurance and hire can come in handy.

Hiring a larger car for the duration on the camping holiday can not only be a big help in transporting all that you need it can make economic sense when weighed up against the cost of car travel to an airport, flight tickets, taxis to hotels and all the extra travel expenses that inevitably occur on a holiday. The single outlay of short term car insurance for the length of the holiday can be surprisingly low.

If the recession gets us all looking at the way we manage our finances and makes us look at money saving areas like short term car insurance, discount supermarkets and camping holidays then I say that some good can come from it. However the situation is not new and I am reminded of a quote from the Spanish philosopher George Santayana, ' Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it'. Lets hope the lessons we learn this year will bear fruit for years to come.

  1. QUESTION:
Is there any website for comparing short term car insurance in the UK?
I usually use gocompare.com or confused.com for comparing the normal insurance prices. But, they do not seem to have an option for short term insurance quotations. I am lazy to enter the details again on different sites. So, I am wondering whether there are any sites for comparing short term car insurance.

    • ANSWER:
tempcover.com (or something similar) you must be over 21 though

  2. QUESTION:
I am looking for a short term car insurance for overseas visitors to use my car.?
my insurance company won't cover my family to drive my car as they don't have an australian driving licence. they are here for a while and will be using my car instead of hiring one. I am looking for a company that does short term car insurance for overseas visitors.

    • ANSWER:
Well for the life of me I can't understand why. After all over 60% of rental car companies business is with foreign nationals. Now if your visitors are already here and they hold a current drivers licence, take them to registration branch and see about an international licence. If they are not yet here, tell them to seek such licence in country of origin.Hope this helps

  3. QUESTION:
Short term car insurance for foreign visitors?
Me and a few guys (UK citizens) are planning on coming to the US and driving East to West over a few months. We are thinking of buying a car and then selling it before we leave.

Is it possible to get short term car insurance for this amount of time? Keeping in mind that we are not from US also?

    thanks

    • ANSWER:
First of all, you may need to consider the matter of licenses. Some states will not register someone a car if they do not have a US license. Also, you will be paying through the roof for insurance as US insurance carriers have no way of verifying a non-US license, so they charge you higher premiums. If you are a younger person, you may pay a lot more. Without a US address, I think very few insurance companies would write a policy. Furthermore, even if you are able to get an insurance policy, it may only cover you while you are the driver; none of your mates would be covered to drive.

If you have auto insurance now, check to see if your insurance company offers any special coverage for traveling outside Europe. Check into getting an international license that covers you to drive in other countries. You may need to fill out some forms or a test (Americans have to if they wish to drive in UK). A car rental may be another option as usually they are later model cars and more dependable. You can also take out insurance with the rental car agency. Most airports have rental car companies there. You may want to inquire of them ahead of time.

  4. QUESTION:
Short term car insurance In the US ?
I need A short term Insurance policy.
It is for my Friend we are going to drive up to our home state of Indiana.
    For summer vaction,
I am wanting to get Insurance to cover him driving my car for like two weeks,
It is the only way my parents will let me go.

SO any info on a Company that does that would be great .

    Thank you in advance
I am but he is 20 With a good record.

    • ANSWER:
Since you are required to have your parents permission to make your trip, I must assume that you are under the age of 25 and your parents are paying your insurance. Since I am not familiar with your driving record, (safety, length of time driving, etc.) your best bet would be to call around to different insurance companies and make your inquiries there. Explain what you need, and why you need it. You may find what you want quickly, or you might be pointed to a company that CAN accommodate your specific need.
You might also have to buy a six month policy, then cancel it when you return, and get a pro-rated refund.
If you can't find anyone to help you suggest the bus to your parents as an alternate mode of transportation. It can be a great adventure, and you can catch up on your sleep on the way home.

Does anyone know of a way to get short term car insurance in the uk for someone aged under 21?

    • ANSWER:

The only reason i'm asking is because the cost of renewal last year was £450, this years renewal the cheapest I found was £1300!!!

  8. QUESTION:
Where can I get short term car insurance for someone age 17?
Ive looked on a few sites but they are all for people over 21 so far. Can anyone help?

    • ANSWER:

  9. QUESTION:
    Short term car insurance?
    Hello,

Is their any short term insurance companies who will Insure for maybe 1 month or 6 months? Most of them require you to be driving for atleast 6 months after passing. My sister passed her test yesterday and wants short insurance so she can drive abit before going back to UNI. Does anyone know of any companies that do this?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Most companies do it, but I think you will have to ring directly, or go into their offices. You might not be able to do it online.

Also, its *very* expensive. I got three months (a looong time ago) It was only £50 cheaper than 6 months, and 6 months was only £150 cheaper than the whole year.

Be prepared to answer questions. They get suspicious when you ask for short term. They think you are going to torch the car and claim or something. If you have a genuine reason, like she seems to, then don't worry about that.

  15. QUESTION:
short term car insurance in the Netherlands?
    Hello,
I bought a Dutch registered car here in UK and it seems the only place I can insure it to drive it to my house is the Netherlands. No insurer in UK wants to issue an insurance on no UK registered car. Can anybody recommend a insurance company in the Netherlands or their web site where I can 1-2 days insurance and do this in English, It would be much simpler to wright a few key words in Google in Dutch but I can't.

    Thanks

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Seems a bit of an odd question really. Can the original owner not drive it to your house on his/her insurance? What will you do then? You obviously can't drive it without insurance, and no Dutch insurance company is going to issue an insurance certificate without a Dutch residential address.

Did you get the registration documents with the car, including a document headed APK, which is the Dutch equivalent of the MOT.

What you can consider is getting an MOT on the car (you would have to know the approximate year of manufacture) then applying for a UK registration via you local DVLA Office.

However, reading between the lines of your question, I get the feeling you have bought a "Pig in a Poke". and it may not be worth the hassle of re registering.

Anyway; hope I'm wrong, and you have got yourself a decent set of wheels. :o )

  16. QUESTION:
Short-term car insurance in the US?
In the following year I'm going to have several visitors coming for just a few days and I want them to be able to use my car. I'd like to know if there are companies that offer short-term car insurance.

    • ANSWER:
Your guests will be covered with your auto insurance policy, with all the risks that that entails (they get into an accident, you could be the one sued, and your rate may go up). Unfortunately, that is just how things are done here.

No insurance company will let your guests buy their own insurance for just a few days. Auto insurance policies in the US are for terms of 6 months. Even if it were possible, it still would be worthless. In many states, such as Florida, by law, if you lend your car, you also lend them your insurance.

you can be insured on someones policy for a short period of time. Your best bet is to contact the insurer who insures the car at the moment and ask them for a quote. Be prepared to pay through the nose tho as he is young and doesn`t have a full licence.

    • ANSWER:
The short term auto insurance applies to temporary needs and is a good option for a short term. This is to make sure that your vehicle remains covered in all situations even those not covered by regular insurance plans. Its convenience makes it worthwhile to consider having it when you are undecided about your auto insurance plan. It helps you to be covered while you still weigh your options on auto insurance coverage.

Take online quote from an insurance company. for more info on short term ins you can read this article..

  20. QUESTION:
is there short term car insurance?
I am going on a trip, and i am going to borrow a car from someone, and they don't have insurance on it..I wanted to know if i could get temporary insurance on it..

    • ANSWER:
You cannot purchase automobile insurance for a vehicle that you do not own. Your friend can purchase a policy and then you can drive the car -- but if I were you I would not trust someone that has not had insurance on that car, i.e. if you drive an uninsured vehicle and have an at fault accident you will be just as liable as the owner of the vehicle. If you go this route, go with your friend to the insurance company to purchase the policy--that way you can make sure it is covered.

The other option if you still want to drive this car is to purchase a non-owned auto policy -- Progressive Insurance is one of the many companies that sell this. Once you purchase it, you can drive any vehicle and it will be covered for liability coverage. You can cancel the policy a month or two later -- they do charge a penalty for cancelling which in most states is .

If it were me though -- I would rather rent a car and purchase the insurance. The situation with this vehicle sounds like some drama.

      Good Luck

  21. QUESTION:
Short-term car insurance in California? Advice needed!?
I am going to rent a car in California for 6 weeks. I don't own a car of my own, so I don't have any normal car-insurance policy of my own. I do have a Visa gold-card, that covers collision damage waiver; but I wouldn't want to be without liability etc.

Question: Is there any better deal I can get than paying the - per day to the car rental company? Any ideas would be very welcome.
    Bill,

    It's 6 weeks, not 6 months.

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately insurance companies will not sell you a policy unless you own the car. I am not up on California law but try contacting an independant insurance agent that writes for all kinds of companies. Ask them if you can buy a 6 month comp and collision policy on a rented/leased car. That might do it for you.

Short term insurance in UK on non-UK registered car?
I just bought a LHD dutch registered car from eBay which I intend to export in two months time and register it abroad. There is no point registering it in UK. I was hoping to ask a friend to drive it for me on his comprehensive insurance (driving others cars with their permission with third party only) to my house until I am ready to export it but then I found out that because the car has no insurance on it is not legal to use the driving others car clause of his insurance.
I also tried a few companies in UK offering short term insurance but the refused because it is not registered in UK.
Putting it on the back of a car transported is a bit too expensive.

I intend to try to get a short term insurance in the Netherlands over the phone or internet but because of the language it seems a bit difficult at the moment.

Can please you help me with my options - perhaps I am missing something here.

    • ANSWER:
I think that the advice to make enquiries with American insurance companies is useless in your case. I am afraid that it is unlikely that you will get insurance on a car which is not registered with the DVLA. I think the only option would be to get it shifted on a trailer as driving it while uninsured is just not worth the risk.

  30. QUESTION:

  31. QUESTION:
where can you purchase short term insurance in the US?
Is it possible to buy temporary car insurance on a daily or weekly basis? I know this is offered in the UK and you can purchase this type of insurance for driving into Mexico, but can you buy daily policies in the US? I have a car that I want to keep parked on my ranch and only drive a few days or weeks during the year and I don't want to pay for a whole year policy.

    • ANSWER:
The shortest term you can buy in the US is a one month policy, through Leader Insurance. It's just not worth the insurance company's time and effort to issue a "daily" policy.

Keep in mind, though, if you ONLY drive the vehicle on your ranch, you don't NEED to have it insured - only if you drive it on public roads.

  32. QUESTION:
I've seen a car that I think I can buy and resell for a profit. Where can I get CHEAP short-term insurance?
I've had a look at various temp cover sites but they are quoting silly prices (£150 a month!). As I need to get the logbook in my name before I resell it could be upto 2 months before it's sold and any potential profit would go on paying the insurance! Any tips from people that resell cars would be appreciated!!

    • ANSWER:

  33. QUESTION:
I live overseas. I will be in the U.S. 6 wks. Is it possible to buy car insurance for use only w/rental cars?
I've been trying to avoid buying all the car insurance for rentals (usually covering 6 wks). Since I have a wife and 2 kids, I want them to covered. Currently my rental practically doubles when I purchase it from the car rental agency. Do you know of any insurance that sells short-term car insurance exclusively for rental cars?

    • ANSWER:
If you have a gold or better credit card, you'll normally be covered for physical damage on the rental car. It is usually limited to rentals of 30 days or less, however, so you should consider two consecutive rentals with different companies to make sure that you're covered.

Liability coverage is included in the base rental charge.

Check with your travel agent before you leave. They may be able to offer physical damage cover for you at a lower cost, possibly bundled with your regular travel insurance coverage, if your credit card doesn't offer this protection.

Geico or another online insurance company will sell it to you and let you print out the info. Probably even tonight. By the way, you will most likely lose your license now for ninety days or so. In Indiana you would anyway for not having insurance when you were ticketed. Good luck.

I'm leaving the country for a year. What can I do about my car insurance? or what do you recommend?
One idea was to get the lowest possible coverage and continue insurance. The problem though is that I may be only back like 3 month out of the year here, but I really want to keep my car. Is there a insurance company out there that does short term insurance policy? or I can leave the car here with no insurance but is that a bad idea? • ANSWER:
If you are planning to park your car in a garage, and nobody will be driving it, you can ask your insurance company to suspend the Liability and Property Damage, until you come back. You can let the Fire and Theft coverage run while you are away. It is much cheaper than most every other kind of coverage, but it really depends on what kind of car you are talking about.

Temporary Car Insurance for EU Driving (see additional details)?
A friend is driving a car from the UK to Greece. However, he would like to share the driving. The problem is that I am not currently insured on the vehicle and don't have a policy that allows me to drive all cars.
I've been looking for short term car insurance. However, they all seem to insist that the car is back in the UK before the policy expires. This is not possible though as my friend is staying in Greece for some time with the car and I will fly back when I get there.
Are there any policies on offer that don't require the car to be back in the UK before the expiry?

  41. QUESTION:
Cost of Cancelling multiple 6-month car insurance policies in US?
I am 18 years old, male, clean driving record, good student, going to college. I will only be going home for occasional weekends, and vacations, and I would like to be insured so I can drive my car (saturn 2000 sl) around. I don't want to pay for the high cost of permanent car insurance, but want to be insured when I need it.

I looked up ways to get temporary (short term) car insurance and I basically found that if you are under 21, you cannot pay daily or weekly. I also found that US insurance companies generally offer policies that are at least 6 months. Since I want tthen you can only get 6month or 1 year policies.

They suggest getting the 6 month policy and paying monthly, and then simply canceling the policy once I am done with it. Therefore if I did this, I would be buying and canceling many policies every year. I would maybe do this a few weekends every semester and also winter, spring, and summer break.

So basically I want to save money by foregoing yearly car insurance, but instead would like to do what I stated above. The big question is: IS IT WORTH IT? Ordering, and then cancelling up to six to eight 6-month policies, each paying for the first monthly payment.

    Note: I currently have MetLife.

    Thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
When you cancel that policy early, you usually have to pay an extra month's premium, and in some states, a flat cancellation fee. Additionally, when you go for more than 30 days without coverage, you get a higher rate when you buy your policy. Most of the time, when you buy that new policy, you have to put down two or three months premium up front. Many states, you'd have to turn in your tags, to avoid having your registration and license suspended automatically, after your insurance cancels.

If you go six months without driving your car, it's probably worth it. If you're talking about driving one weekend out of six or eight weeks, it's probably NOT worth it.

  42. QUESTION:
I don't have car insurance and I am moving/driving to PEI in September and need a short term policy any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Whatever you do, if you allow a policy to cancel for non payment this is worse than actually having an accident. It'll haunt you for a long time so don't.
I'd say get an insurance and then when you move just contact them and notify them of the change of address!

  43. QUESTION:
Does the monthly payment on a lease vehicle include taxes and car insurance?
I am looking to lease a car but I am on a budget. Ive been looking online at some people that want to "sell" or "transfer" their lease because I would only want it short term. Since lease cars are usually new insurance would be too much for me to pay, so I was wondering if a monthly lease payment includes it, and taxes.

    • ANSWER:
I am strongly recommending you do not do this. Likely, it is fraught with pitfalls you've not considered. Your best bet is to pay cash for a car. Always do this.

Leasing contains certain provisions which include: excess mileage, wear and tear (subjective) and tire wear, glass breakage and other Elements which can sting you horribly. Monthly rent does not include insurance. You'll be required to carry very high limits of liability nd should it lapse, they can and will repossess.

  44. QUESTION:
Short term Insurance policy in Us?
I need A short term Insurance policy. It is for my Friend we are going to drive up to our home state of Indiana. For summer vaction, I am wanting to get Insurance to cover him driving my car for like two weeks, It is the only way my parents will let me go. SO any info on a Company that does that would be great . Thank you in advance

    • ANSWER:
As long as there is insurance on the vehicle, and your friend is a legal driver he is covered under the cars policy,unless,............................I'm a little older, and my police will not cover anyone under the age of 21,I had this added because it got me lower rates, and I don't let anyone drive my vehicles.
It is also illegal to have insurance coverage on a vehicle that you have no interest in,..............what that means is that your friend cannot get insurance on your car unless his name is on the title. The reason for this is because if this could be done,I could take insurance on my nieghbors Mercedes, then set it on fire and I would get a check. He can't get insurance on your car,and please don't add his/her name to your title! ( BAD IDEA) Hope this helps GOOD LUCK Rob in Pa.

  45. QUESTION:
Short term car rental in Bay area?
    Hi,

Is there a short-term car rental (~2-3 months) facility available in San Fransisco Bay area? What would be the approximate cost assuming that I will have to buy insurance as well?
    Thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
my company usually uses enterprise rent-a-car for corporate visitors from our canadian office for rentals for 2- 4 months.

checkout their website at enterprise.com and you can search by any type of car and length of rental. When I had been in a car accident and was having my car repaired for two months i had a nissan murano through enterprise that was per day. The longer you rent a car, you can get weekly rates.

And you will need to have insurance to rent a car.

    Temporary Car Insurance?
is there an insurance company in the US that offers temp. or short term insurance? i want to buy a car, just to drive back to my house and fix up a bit (5 min drive) and i dont want to pay for a months' worth i wont use, when im only 5 mins away.

    • ANSWER:
Most insurance companies offer temporary operating permits (or TOPS as they are known in the industry). They can be for 1 day to 2 weeks. More expensive than a full term 1 year policy but if you only need it for one day don't go through the hassle of taking out a long term policy, cancel it in a couple of days and pay a cancellation penalty (oh yes there will be one).

  50. QUESTION:
UK:Anyone know of any short term car insurers that will accept you if you haven't had your?
driving licence for over 12 months?

A friend has had hers for 6 months but can't seem to get insurance.

    THANK YOU X
She doesn't have one hun, she wants to get temp cover for her friends car....

Thank you for your input though x

    • ANSWER:
      No, doubtful she'll find any.

I'm with Direct Line and on the back of my policy it states something along the lines that my car is not to be driven by anyone either under the age of 18 and if the person has had their license for less than 1 year and is involved in an accident, they have to stump up £250 towards the insurance claim.

At that age and with the lack of experience (your mate could be the best drive in the world, but all new drivers get marked down in this way), a lot of insurers get very twitchy about such temporary cover.
