Most parents eventually find out that insuring young drivers is a major expense. The minute they add their new teenage driver to their auto policy, they can almost count on their rates to go through the roof. Qualifying for a student discount for car insurance is the best way to bring the cost down but the young driver has to be a good student.
Unfortunately, because young drivers represent the largest risk to insurance companies, their rates are extremely high. They lack the wisdom to handle the unexpected that comes from years of experience and they are easily distracted. The excitement of finally being in the driver's seat coupled with fun friends and these days - cell phones can make for a deadly mix.
Simply put, teenage drivers are statistically more reckless, get into more collisions, are more of a liability. They cost insurance companies far more than any other group of drivers and therefore must pay higher premiums than any other group. It may seem unfair to be painted with the "stereotypical brush" but, all new young drivers will have to prove themselves worthy of cheaper car insurance.
In short, parents can't avoid paying the higher rates to insure their teens behind the wheel, but they can keep the price as low as possible by encouraging them to be responsible adults and to excel in school.
Many car insurance companies reward teen drivers who maintain an A - B average in all of their classes. They feel that taking school seriously implies that they are responsible individuals and will approach driving with the same attitude.
The same goes for completing a driver's education course. Passing a safe driving course also indicates that students take their driving seriously.
Keep in mind that discounts on insurance are not mandatory. They are granted at the discretion of the individual insurance companies and are determined on a case to case basis. However, if you child is a full-time high school or college student, between the ages of 16 and 24 with at least a B average or a 3.0 GPA (Honor Roll or Dean's List - even better!) - you need to ask your agent about getting a discount on their insurance.
These are basic guidelines only. The qualifications for a student discount on car insurance may vary depending on the state you live in and the provider that you use so talk with your insurance agent for clarification. It is always wise to shop around. Compare quotes from at least three different companies. You may find out that your current insurance carrier does not have the best deal.

QUESTION:
17 year old student Car Insurance for a Ford Fiesta 1.25 or a 1.4 climate 2004-2005?
Insurance for a Ford Fiesta 1.25 or a 1.4 climate 2004-2005I need reasonable car insure I have no “no claims bonus” and I am new driver. I have been quoted around £4000 fully com on a £4000 car. My budget for insurance is around £1400 full or third party. I am an A level Law student I will going to uni next year and I might use the car to commute to there
-
ANSWER:
This is simple:
If your budget is £1400 then get *third party only* and be very careful how you drive your nice £4000 car as if you dent it through your fault you fix it with your wallet.
That's it.
You could even get a £750 car and keep the £3250 in your wallet and when/if you dent it it won't be such a big deal.
In fact you might need to do that as your insurance might even be over 2 grand even if it's only third party.
And yeah you WILL dent it, 99.92% sure, according to general statistics. There's plenty of UK insurers here, it's free to get quotes:

be safe out there.

QUESTION:
Student Car insurance?
Does anyone know of a good insurance company that is suitable to students? I am off to university in september, I'm not taking my car with me however, I will be home every other weekend and will want to use it then as well as when i'm home for christmas etc. I am looking for an insurance company that is suitable for this kinda thing as I dont want to be payin lots for insurance when I hardly use the car. Thanks
-
ANSWER:
If you are based in the UK, then Endsleigh would be a good place to check - I used to work there. They used to do a motor policy where a student could 'freeze' a policy - they would still pay their installments, but would be able to claim this back for the next year's premium at renewal, and could still get no claims bonus in some situations.
Plus they are understanding that you'd effectively have 2 addresses, home and uni - something that some car insurance companies cannot do, and may charge you to change it everytime.

QUESTION:
Would car insurance cover be higher for a student or a student nurse?
Currently applying for new car insurance, on website they ask for your details of full time education. It actually asks whether you are a student or student nurse? I happen to be student nurse but just wondered if anyone knew which would cost more? Thanks
-
ANSWER:
I assume you mean full time occupation and not education ? Every insurance company is different in assessing students and student nurses. Some are happier with students as they tend to drink a lot in the evenings so don't drive (stereotyping I know but the statistics prove it). Some feel student nurses are a better risk as they are perceived to be more sensible people. Other companies either won't insure any of them, or charge the same price for both of them.

QUESTION:
best car insurance for a college student?
hey guys, I'm inheriting my mum's 1992 Nissan pick up truck. I'm 20 years old, female and have never had a car accident. I checked out insurance from State Farm (my mum's) and it's 78$$ a month. that's way too much for me (a financial aid college student). Anybody know of a good cheap car insurance?-
ANSWER:
a month is a damn fine rate for a 20 year old. There's no shortcut, though - to find the cheapest rate for you, you have to shop around. Don't bother with all the spam links you'll get as a result of this question - they only want to harvest your personal information to sell it.

QUESTION:
Can you get student loan to cover a car and car insurance?
I was just wondering what all a student loan covered? Do you determine what it covers or does the bank?
I am going to school I was just wondering What it covered?-
ANSWER:
The key to not coming out of college with a bunch of debt is to borrow as little as you can. With that being said, most student loans are based on the cost of attendance, etc. The loan is paid directly to the school and they send you what is left after tuition and fees. You can spend that money however you want, but use it wisely because you will be paying your loan bills for a lot longer than you will have whatever car you are getting.

QUESTION:
Why is important to have insurance ? What are 3 ways a student can lower his/her car insurance ?-
ANSWER:
Insurance is a MUST. If you were to get in an accident (which happens more often than you'd think), you'd have to pay the expenses out of pocket, which could easily cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars, just for the other party alone. Students can lower their rates by being on a parents policy, driving a "safer" car as opposed to a sporty coupe-type vehicle, and keeping their grades up. Many companies reward students by lowering their rates when they maintain a specified GPA.

QUESTION:
how often do car insurance companies ask for transcripts for good student discount?
i am 21 and still in college.
i was wondering how often they request for your transcript to verify that you still qualify. is it every semester or once a year. i cant remember the last time my dad asked me for my transcript to give to the insurance company. i got a 3.5 in the fall 2010 semester but i do have a C+ on it that i want to hide from my parents so i was wondering what the chance is that they'll want my transcript for the fall semester for car insurance companies. thanks-
ANSWER:
It is usually every time your policy is due for renewal or every semester. It's all up to the insurer, you can call them and ask since you are listed on the policy. The base it on your total average so a 3.5 is beyond their requirements. Unfortunately, I never qualified for this discount because I always barely passed, you should take a defensive driving course if you haven't done so already. You will get 10% off your liability and collisions premiums plus up to 4 points off your license(if you have any). Also make sure you are getting all the discounts you can get such as, multi-car/homeowner, paid in full, full airbags, automatic seat belts, etc. Hope this helps!!

Also, I live in Kentucky, forgot to mention that-
ANSWER:
If you are still living at home you should be able to stay on the auto policy. If not you may have to get your own. However, the insurance companies may not request academic standing this semester so you may luck out. Some health insurance companies are now starting to allow kids to stay on a policy until age 30, with or without college, as long as they're living at home and unmarried. Most require you to be in college and will only cover you through age 24. Each state and each company has different laws and rules, though, so you'll have to call your agent.

What is the best CAR insurance for an 18yr old college student who is away from home?-

By best, I'm going to assume you mean company, rather than coverages. Coverages will depend on more than your age and where you live. They will not only be able to give you quotes, but offer excellent suggestions on how to protect yourself and your belongings against other losses.

QUESTION:
Can a parent cover insurance on a student's car?
The car I drive is currently registered in my father's name. It is covered by an automobile accident insurance policy paid for by my parents, along with their cars. I have been making payments on the car, and it will soon be paid off. If I have the car registered in my name, can my parents still cover the car in their policy, or will that be another thing I have to pay through college?-
ANSWER:
Most likely you can have the vehicle in your name but still keep it on your parents policy. If you are a minor you will have to have the insurance policy in your parents name or someone who is not a minor. Minors cannot enter into a contract like a car loan or insurance policy. You could have your parents call their insurance company and find out for sure what their policy is in doing what you are asking about or you could call yourself and just ask your question and see what they have to say. Insurance companies have different policies regarding how they will insure a vehicle. You just need to find out what your parents insurance company will do in your situation.

QUESTION:
student car?
what is the best student car
these are things i am looking for
high miles to gallon
reliability
cheap insurance on the car
fairly cheap (can be second hand)
etc
yes i live in the uk if tht helps-
ANSWER:
For cheap insurance stay away from 2 and 3 door cars and get a 4 or 5 door (anything which looks at all sporty tends to attract higher insurance premiums, probably high enough to make the extra cost of two more doors look cheap). If you're buying new then something small from Korea will do, a Hyundai Getz or Accent, Kia Rio or Daewoo Kalos (though they aren't sold under the Daewoo name outside of Asia) are cheap to buy and run and if you maintain them will give you good reliability (true of any good car).
With a used car you'd be looking towards something that size although if you buy used you buy based on condition and maintenance without any real regard for model (provided that a model you're looking at doesn't have a history of shoddy construction).

QUESTION:
good student discount for car insurance?
so...i just completed my first year of college, and quite frankly i finished up poorly. my GPA is like a little over 2.4-2.5 and my dad is asking if i'll be able to send my transcript to the insurance (my dad is unaware of my grades). no chance of getting some discount or any at all??...i've kept my grades from my dad for quite some time, and now this is totally gonna blow my cover. i'm screwed aren't i? i'm a full time student and the insurance company is american family. so i guess my question is, do they discount % based on intervals of GPA, or is there just a minimum requirement and it's either you get a discount or not?-
ANSWER:
I believe you need at least a 3.0 to receive the "Good Student" discount. Explain to your dad that the first year of college is tough, that you tried your best, and that you will try really hard to bring up your GPA your sophomore year. I don't get upset when my kids bring home poor grades if I know they tried. Good luck!

by best i mean cheapest, im not really worried too much about coverage cuz i have to drive to school [1 mile away] and work [half a mile away] and i go to hi school-
ANSWER:
If your parents are/were in the military, then USAA can be very competitive. Progressive and Geico can also be competitive, if you fit in their "model."AIG, Safeco and Mercury Insurance (if you live in CA) are competitive, but can sometimes be tough if you have a claim. If you live in PA or NY, Erie Insurance is very competitive.
I would go to an independent agent's office with your parents, and get a bunch of quotes. A good agent can sometimes know which companies like young drivers, and can also find discounts (like good student, driving school, multiple policy) that you may not have known about.
The key is to shop around a lot. You may be shocked at how much your insurance costs.

QUESTION:
What are the stipulations for a full-time students at a car insurance firm?
I recently took 13 units and ended up failing a (3-unit) class. I was wondering if that would take me off of the full student status?
I believe my car insurance is AAA and I live in California.-
ANSWER:
If you were enrolled as full time, it counted as full time. You probably won't be getting that good student discount though. If you're worried your insurance will drop you, you should call them and just ask an agent what their policy is.

QUESTION:
Car insurance regarding student drivers?
I recieved my PA learner's permit a while ago and now I'm looking at insurance. This brings up several questions.First of all, I will be driving my parent's car, and will not be buying one of my own. Is it necessary (or legal for that matter) for me to have a policy in my own name, or can I just add my name to my parents' policy?
Also, which option will be more economical? I realize that this will be a financial nightmare to add myself to a policy, but what are some things I can do to make it easier on my wallet? (I don't want my tombstone to say that I died from looking at my bank statement).
Thanks!

ANSWER:
If you are under 18, you cannot legally enter into or sign any type of contract in the US. You will be added to your parents policy & if you want to get your own insurance once you turn 18 you can do so then.Granted, your parents premiums will increase for having an new teen driver on their policy.

QUESTION:
Why is car insurance more expensive for a full time student than for somebody in full time employment?in the UK..............
-
ANSWER:
In most states, insurance rates are based on years of driving experience. If you're a student, chances are you haven't had your license very long, so your rates would be higher. It may also depend on what kind of car you drive and on whether you live in a neighborhood that has a greater incidence of theft and vandalism.
