Teen Auto Insurance

If you do not already know, Florida is a no fault state. This means that there are some requirements that Florida might have that other states do not. If you are currently looking into getting insurance to cover your teen that just got their license, here are some things to keep in mind. Some of us have not had to purchase insurance in a while!

Florida Requirements:

- Your teen must have a learners permit before being able to obtain an official license. Not only do they have to get a learners license before, they have to carry it for a whole year.

- After you have your license and ready to drive, you need to get the following:

1. PIP coverage, also known as personal injury protection.

2. Bodily Injury Liability: ,000.

( Note: you must always check with an insurance agent to see if there have been any changes).

Although the minimum requirement is not that much, if you were to be in an accident, you could find yourself in a compromising position. Being that you are insuring a young, inexperienced driver, it is especially important to make sure you have all your ducks in a row and covered on all fronts in case of an accident. We hope our children and ourselves will not ever have to experience an accident. Often, more times than not, a person will experience an accident or "fender bender". This is a higher risk with teens. Numbers show that teens are at a much higher risk for causing accidents due to negligence. Distraction such as friends, phones, etc. are very prevalent amongst kids that age. Finding the right balance for your teenager's auto insurance coverage and your wallet is sometimes a challenge.

It is recommended that along with the required insurance, you should carry: Uninsured motorist, Comprehensive, Collision, and Bodily Injury Liability. If you are making payments on a financed car, it is already a requirement that you must carry full coverage. Depending on the year and condition of your car, it might not make sense to carry collision or comprehensive insurances. Sometimes, book value for cars is much less than the deductible it would cost to get the car fixed. Or, in another instance, if your car were totaled, you would have put more into coverage than your car is even worth. Check the specifics on all the different options available.

Also, make sure you take advantage of the money savers stated before. Good grades and a safe vehicle are a good way to reduce a teenager's auto insurance rate. As a policy holder yourself, you can look into multi-car discounts, insuring your home and car through the same company, if applicable and making sure you are getting appropriate discounts for the safety features in your car. Another common money saver that people tend to over look is AAA. Although AAA is not the only auto club; it is the most recognized. Sometimes clubs can save you money on an auto insurance policy just as they do for an amusement park ticket!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is a typical range of costs for teen auto insurance?
I have to say - this field is RIPE for a good consumer survey that gives some general ranges of insurance by state or region. Nearly everything online - (correction - EVERYthing) on line links to get quotes from insurers (commercial sites) . Fine, but suppose a kid is in the early stages of learning about cars and parents are new to the kid driver insurance game and they just want to get a feel for ranges of prices based on region, car type, first time driver, male/female, etc. Let's assume a modest new car in the ,000 new range and a responsible kid with middle income family - good insurance history. The new driver is added to current parent policies. Is the range 00 to 00? Or narrower ... 00 - 00.

    • ANSWER:
I have seen insurance go up by 800-over 5,000 by adding on the first teen driver. The best bet, and easiest way to save money is to find a company that will actually let you rate the driver to the vehicle they drive and NOT the highest rated driver to the highest rated car (which is what a LOT of them do). If you can find a company that will do this, buy a car that you will not need full coverage on. This will save the most money.

  2. QUESTION:
Is it true that when you go to driving school you get discounts in your teen auto insurance?
I am 17 and about to go get my license. I live in Texas and when I got my permit I opted for parent-tought rather than driving school. Well I was told that when you go to driving ed, you get discounts on your insurance... Is this true? or does it apply to both driviers ed and parent tought? or does it just not exist at all?

    • ANSWER:
It really may depend on your insurance and school system, but it was the case for me in Alabama. Also, certain insurance companies give discounts to adults who periodically take defensive driving courses.

  6. QUESTION:
What's the average cost for adding a teen to auto insurance who've completed drivers ed?
I got my license this past Thursday, and I'm waiting on my dad to add my to his insurance (State Farm) So I can begin driving my car. It seems like he's procrastinating;UGH! Anyways, How much do you think it will be? & don't I get a discount if I've completed drivers ed?
another question do I have to pay like this huge first time fee? or do I just pay like what i'll be paying monthly?

    • ANSWER:
      I'm with State Farm too.
Your insurance would depend on your car, you would pay more with a new car than with an older, less expensive one.

When I added my son, he had several discounts...driver training, good driving, good student, multicar...ask directly to State Farm (they have a good website) so they can tell you exactly how you can save money.

      Edit:
I pay the bills every six months but I could pay every 3 months if I wanted to. I'm not sure about a monthly payment.
My son's insurance costs about 0 every 6 months (which would be about /month) and he has a 2002 Corolla. He saves more than every month because of his discounts.

My car is as old but my insurance costs only half of what my son's insurance costs, because I'm not a teenager. Your dad is not looking forward to having to pay your insurance which will be twice as expensive as his!

  7. QUESTION:
how much do i pay for teen auto insurance on a 2010 car?
my parents just got me a 2010 nissan versa! :) its not from the dealership, so we wouldn't have to pay full coverage, just the basic law coverage. i need an estimate on how much it will be a month. my parents aren't helping me that well with anything, they want me to just be "on my own" already so pleaseeee, help. i can't do this myself :(

    • ANSWER:
Full coverage isn't about whether or not you bought it from a dealership, it's about if there's a loan on it, or if you want to be paid for it, if someone totals or steals your car.

If you're male, and 18, with a spotless driving record, in most parts of the USA, minimum liability only, is going to run you around ,000 a year. 25% down.

And it only goes up from there.

  8. QUESTION:
how much do you pay for auto insurance for teen?

    -3 cars
    -1 boat
-live with parents under whom which ill have co-sign my insurance for now

out of predictions, how much do teens usually pay for auto insurance?

    • ANSWER:
Here in Houston, with one car and minimum liability only coverage, it would be about ,000 a year.

yes i know for teens it sucks because they might have to pay for it. But do you think it helps in the long run?

  10. QUESTION:
When to add teen to auto insurance policy?
My 16 y/o son just received his driver's license. Do we need to add him to our policy immediately or is he covered for a certain period of time as a student driver?

    • ANSWER:
      Diana,
Since he has his license he has to be added to your policy right away. You can check into discounts available if he gets good grades. You also may want to get him to take a defensive driving course as this could qualify him for an extra discount, too. Check with your company when you add him on. See what discounts they offer. :-)

  16. QUESTION:
Re: Auto insurance for teen drivers, What grades do ins companies use to determine the GSD?
I'm hoping that mid-quarter progress reports aren't used in determining the good student discount. I think they probably use each quarter report grades or even just the two semesters. Mid-quarters are just info for parents, and not shared with insurance companies, right? In case it matters, this is in Wisconsin.

    • ANSWER:
Most auto insurance companies require A-B honor roll grade averages for GSD info. Mid-Quarter grades are not shared with insurance companies - because, quite frankly, the insurance companies dont have the time to care. So, no need to stress too much over your kids midterm reports.

teen boys are expensive. the cheapest thing would be to put him on yours, as an occasional driver. have him get a job and pay the difference. your rate will go up b/c he is new driver and a teen boy. but honestly dont let him pay and arm and a leg to get his own policy its ridiculously expensive.

  19. QUESTION:
should auto insurance for teen boys be more expensive than teen girls?
im doing a project and i don't which one to answer i need your help

I work in insurance. Girls have more accidents but boys have more expensive accidents. 23. QUESTION:
do you have to add your teen to auto insurance immediately after getting thier drivers license? (Florida)?
so myself and my teen have been arguing about getting thier license because i think that you have to add them to your auto insurance immediately after they get thier license, but they insist that you dont unless you have a car, i need to know if this is true or not so that i can make my decision becuase i dont want to pay for extra insurance just yet but i dont know whether to let them get it or not. Will insurance automatically start billing me extra? and what will happen if they are not on my insurance and something happens, whether it be an accident or a ticket? will they get in more trouble for not being on my car insurance or will nothing happen at all, or will i be fined for it?

    • ANSWER:
You need to add them the day they get their license. Excluding is dangerous, not even allowed in some states. Even if they are not driving, they have access to your car. What if you get hurt & they need to drive you to the hospital? What if you are not home & a friend calls them in a panic that they need a ride somewhere?
Also, what if they are out with friends & the driver they are with, can't/doesn't want to drive & your child drives? What if they have an accident? What if the car is not insured or underinsured? You can better believe, the injured party will come after you as the parent of a teen for coverage - it will probably be excess over the vehicle's insurance but I'm sure you would be named in a lawsuit. Your policy will defend you & your teen & pay or not pay per the laws of your State.
Now, if you do not list your teen & they have an accident with your car, there will be a long investigation for the company to decide if they will cover it (in my state they have to because they can't exclude drivers). This will delay you getting your car fixed. Then, when they do decide they will cover the accident (probably they will but that is not always the case), they will probably charge you BACK to the date your teen got their license, if it is one, two or three years, because they should have been added to your policy. This can be very expensive & they will want it in one payment. Then, after you pay the additional premium, they will pay the claim. Then, they will probably NONRENEW your policy for an undisclosed operator.
So, please add your teen the day they get their license, it will be expensive but it could be worse if they are not added. Have your teen get a part time job to help pay the additional premium. If they want their license that bad, they can help to pay the costs.

  24. QUESTION:
Auto Insurance Teen Driver with G2 License IMPORTANT!?
I got in an accident after midnight and it wasnt my fault. I had 4 passengers in my car but with my g2 restrictions i was only allowed 3. The insurance company is still reviewing my case, does this mean i wont be covered by insurance because I broke my restrictions?
    thanks
the g2 restrictions are from ontario, not the insurance company
i didnt get a ticket or anything from the police, i didnt even know that restriction existed

    • ANSWER:
The liability portion of your policy will not be affected, however the damages to your vehicle will not be covered by your insurer because you violated your license restrictions. So any injuries anyone in your vehicle is covered but your vehicle is not. It's your responsibility to know the restrictions on your license.

  25. QUESTION:
On average, what does it cost to add a teen to your auto insurance?

    • ANSWER:
There is no "average" cost to add a teen to your auto insurance, but once they obtain their license, you must report it to your insurance agent. Other information to consider:

      1. Depending on the company you are insured with, your new driver may be classified as a "principal" operator or an "occasional" operator. As an example, suppose you and your husband each have a car and now your child receives his or her license. You now have two cars and three drivers. Your child will be classified as an "occasional" operator and their risk will be assigned to the car they will drive most of the time. Note that they can drive either car, but their rate will apply to the one they use most often.

Now suppose you have three cars and your child gets his or her license. They would be classified as a "principal operator" on the 3rd car because in theory, they have access to at least one car 100% of the time. Naturally, a principal operator costs more to insure than an occasional operator. One other thing - it does not matter if you say your child won't have access to that 3rd car. If they have a license and they live in your house, the insurance company will assume they have access to the car.

      2. Some companies offer good student discounts. These can reduce premiums by a meaningful amount. Find out how much you can save with the discount. Tell your son or daughter they will have to pay this amount if they lose the discount. That should be incentive to keep their grades up.

      3. If you don't have one already, consider purchasing a personal umbrella policy. It is a fact of life that your auto rates will go up by quite a bit after adding a teenage driver, but spend the extra money on an umbrella to protect your assets. A ,000,000 umbrella policy covering the typical one-house, two-car family would cost you about 0 per year. Now if your child (or anyone else in your family, for that matter) gets into a bad at-fault accident, you'll have up to ,000,000 above your auto liability limits to pay for the claim. It is a tough, but unavoidable fact of life that teens get into accidents much more than experienced drivers and the accidents they have are worse than average. For 0 a year extra (over the cost of adding them to the auto insurance) you can have peace of mind that you won't lose your house after your child has a bad accident that injures or kills someone.

In summary, it will not be inexpensive to add your teen to your policy. Unfortunately, you will have to bite the bullet and pay the premium.

  26. QUESTION:
teen auto insurance 600$ a month WTF??
i just got my license today i'm 18 male NY completed drivers ed, i did a couple of quotes online for a cheap old beat up car like a 95 chevy caviler and most of them gave me three thousand dollar 6 month premiums, which is 500$ to 600$ dollars a month for a a piece of junk car! what kind of bull is that?? thats like a month of rent!!!!!!!!!
someone should sue those corrupt bastards!

    • ANSWER:
Not only does the stats say you are likely to damage the car, where you live may also have a lot to do with it. You may live in a town where the car has a high likely hood of being stolen or vandalized. Especially an older car that is easy to steal. Pick the cheapest insurance company and give them a call. Ask questions about how to bring premiums down and what cars may be better for you.

  27. QUESTION:
What is the best auto insurance company for a teen ager?

    • ANSWER:
There is no one company that will have the "best" rates for any one person. You should check with a local independent insurance agent who can check with many different companies to get you the best possible rate.

When I shopped for my 18 year old son, Safeco turned out to have the best rate of the companies that I sell for. I also checked with State Farm, Allstate, and Geico. None of them could even get close.

  32. QUESTION:
Add a teen to auto insurance policy, please help.?
My dad is getting ready to renew his car insurance, I got my learner's permit in December of last year, and I do drive the car a lot, (with him of course....or not) but if he include me on his policy his premium will be over 00, move like 00 - 00. Just because he added me to his policy, and his insurance company told him he HAVE TO include me on his policy, but I heard some where if you have a learner's permit, you do not
require to be on your parent insurance policy? Or something like that......Is this true?

Normally his car insurance only cost like 0.00/per 6 months, I hate for him to make me go out to get a job just to pay the car insurance and to drive.

    • ANSWER:
Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. Some companies run credit scores and MOST run a motor vehicle report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent or broker. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can.

In my agency, we have companies that do NOT run a credit score and welcome drivers with "less than perfect" driving records and specialize in youthful operators!

In your case, if you are under the age of 18 - you can't get your own policy because you are too young to sign a contract and insurance IS a contract.

You could be the best driver in the world, but, typically within 18 months of getting your drivers license, you will have an accident with another vehicle. It might be minor - it might be major but it will happen. It's statistics and all the other under age drivers are stacked against you.

Most insurance companies want you to be added to be covered or excluded from coverage......and WHY are you driving WITHOUT HIM with your learner's permit????

Most of the replies on this site say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I'm sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won't be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem!

Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

  33. QUESTION:
    Including Teen on Auto Insurance?
Is it okay for a parent to get it insured under their name, and not include the child's name so the cost is lower?

    • ANSWER:
      No.
It's material misrepresentation and can void the policy. So when your teen gets into an accident (and I promise you it will happen) there may be no coverage and you could end up in court.

  34. QUESTION:
    Cheap Auto Insurance for teen?
    I live in Houston, TX
I've had my license for about 9 months and had no ticket, no accident, nothing!
    I have GPA over 3.5
    finished drivers' ed.
where can I get the lowest for manual sedans?

    • ANSWER:
Until you've had your license for 3 years, you're still considered a new driver. The no accidents/no tickets is good. BUT as a teen, you haven't built up your credit yet. A big part of your policy amount is calculated based on your credit. If you're under 18, it cannot be run which will cause a high rate/price. You can get comparison quotes on sites like www.insurance.com & www.progressive.com. It's usually cheaper to be added to a parent's policy if that is an option for you.
      Hope this helps.

  35. QUESTION:

    i meant borrowing...not boring
    thanks everyone.
would insurance rates be any cheaper if it was under my dads name and i was a secondary driver? (even though i'd probably be the only driver). also, i will look into courses and student discounts.
also i live in toronto ontario, canada.

    • ANSWER:
Answer from a General Insurance Agent

No, it would not be legal. Failure to disclose a known driver is Insurance Fraud and a Felony in every state carrying a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Should the fraud be discovered any of the following can happen.

      1. Cancellation of the insurance policy retroactively, meaning a denial of coverage even if they don't find out until after an accident. An insurer is not required to pay claims or damages that are the result of insurance fraud.

      2. Increase your premium and demand that you pay the increased rate retroactively to the inception of the policy. Failure to pay can ruin your credit as well as any co-signers preventing you and them from financing a replacement vehicle.

      3. Felony fraud charges could be filed against you and any one who was complicit in the fraud. i.e. your g/f

      4. The finance company finding that you have fraudulent insurance coverage can repossess the vehicle and demand payment for all costs they incur.

      5. Revocation or suspension of your driver’s license

      6. If stopped by a Law enforcement officer and he realizes what you have done, he can have your vehicle towed and impounded, confiscate your driver's license and even arrest you if he so chooses. not to mention thousands of dollars worth of associated fines in the form of tickets, attorneys, bail bonds and court costs.

Believe me this is not the end of it.

The way to "legally" get your insurance rates down is by taking an approved drivers training or education course and by asking for any good student discounts available from your insurer if you have a at least usually, a "B" average.

You can also consider getting a vehicle with a lower ISO risk number assigned. This would also help you get a lower insurance rate.

Another option if you still live at home would be to have yourself and the vehicle added to a parents policy, This would generally get you a better rate also as the premium is then calculated as a risk spread for all drivers and vehicles on the policy.

Another way to reduce the premium slightly would be, If you can afford it, Is to take a higher deductible on your Comprehensive and Collision portion say 1,000 or even a 2,000 dollar deductible. This is advisable only if you can afford it though in the event you have a loss.

Also it is a good idea to shop your rate around and see who will offer you the best rate.

Although no one thing mentioned above will in itself greatly reduce the premium,, If you can implement several of them then you should see a significant savings

If you can't afford the insurance, then you can't afford the car. It's as simple as that.

      Good Luck and Happy Motoring

  36. QUESTION:
What is the cheapest auto insurance for teens?
I can't find a policy under 00, Or even anything under 0 a month. Houston Sucks!Im 18 and I pay more than anybody in my entire family.

    • ANSWER:
No company is the cheapest for everyone in any group - you gotta go out there and get quotes. Liberty Mutual was more coverage at 1/2 the price of any other company I tried. They also offer Affinity group discounts (there are thousands of credit unions, schools, employers, civic organizations etc.) If you are a member of any of these it can save you anywhere from 5-20% on your total premium. No matter who you go with there are discounts you should check into:

B or better average will get you the "good student discount" that most companies offer - it usually requires a copy of your report card, and you have to be a full time student (college counts too)

Safety discounts on your car - believe me, after doing customer service for more than one big name provider you would be surprised how often these are overlooked - ABS, anti-theft devices, airbags, vin etching on the windows

Some companies have a "single with child" discount for people under 25 who have children, but are not married - if this situation applies. I only mention it b/c most companies won't ask you about it, or advertise this discount.

Low mileage discount - this one usually saves people A LOT of money if they qualify. Usually the limit to get the low milage discount is 7500 miles a year

Drivers Education and/or Defensive Driver Discounts (some companies you can get both) - complete the course for lower rates for an average of 3 years

Ask whatever company you decide to go with for a complete list of the discounts they offer. Other things to consider/that will effect your insurance costs -
ask your agent or customer service how you are "rated" or what is the "class" you are rated in - be sure this reflects the correct car, how many miles you drive each day (over 10 miles one way to work/school will be more expensive), is it work/school (If you drive to work/school fewer than 5 days a week you should see some savings) or pleasure (don't drive it to or from work / school) rated?

If it's possible for you, you will get cheaper insurance through your parents policy and just paying your share, than having a policy of your own.

Many discounts only apply to collision and comprehensive premiums (what most people consider "full coverage") Be sure there are no unwanted coverages - do you need towing / rental? Are your limits higher than you need (although I ALWAYS urge people NOT to go with the state minimums - new cars (supposing you hit one) can easily cost more than most state minimums for property damage, and hospital bills pile up fast. After your insurance reaches it's limits they come after you to make up ALL of the difference)

that should be a good start for you - good luck

  37. QUESTION:
best auto insurance company for teen drivers?
which is bestt?? am 17 and getting my first car soon (04 Nissan Altima)

    • ANSWER:
The best insurer for a 17-year-old is his/her parents' company; they'll get the multi-car discount and have the clout of their coverage. At 17, you can't enter into a contract anyway, and insurance is a contract.

  38. QUESTION:
Who has the cheapest auto insurance rates for teens?
I'm 19 and live in California and want to change to a different auto insurance company. I have had my drivers license for over a year and have a clean driving record. Does anyone have any suggestions of what insurance company company to look at? I feel like nationwide is ripping me off.

    • ANSWER:
have you tried the yellow pages?.! That's by far the best way I know

  39. QUESTION:
Auto insurance for a teen learner driver ?
My 17 year old has her instructional learner's permit (did the driver education, passed the written DMV test, had in car-driver training and is now working towards her 50 hours of in-car practise with us before she can take her driving test). I am confused about whether we need to add her to our auto-insurance. The driver training school says "no", she is covered under our insurance already and besides, you can't get auto-insurance until you pass your test. The Auto Club, however, says she has to be added (but then they'd make money so I'm not surprised they say that). We are in California. If anyone can clarify things for me, that would be great ! Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
she does not need to be added until she has a full license. she is covered under your policy while on a permit. the safest thing to do is contact your agent and let him know you have a child on a permit. most companies will place her on the policy as a non rated driver so your rates will not go up until she is fully licensed, but this makes them aware that she is driving your autos and covers her for any accidents.

  40. QUESTION:
What would be the best way to pay for husbands teen-age daughters auto insurance?
His daughter is asking for money so she can get car insurance. It was expected...

Anyways... we don't mind paying for the car insurance, but what would be the best way to fork the money over so we KNOW the money goes for car insurance and not something else? We already pay 0 a month in child support.

So, the full amount for 6 months is 6.84 through her mom's Farmers Insurance.

Personally, I'd rather send that 306.84 directly to the insurance company each 6 months - so we KNOW it's going for the car insurance.

Hubby would rather either add it to the child support check every month (an added 51.00), or send the 51.00 bucks directly to his daughter each month.

    What's your thoughts?

There is ground rules for the money though... NO TICKETS!
She lives in another state... so I don't believe we can put her on our car insurance policy - even though I know it would be cheaper that Farmers!

She's 16... and is just now starting to talk to her dad again... it's been SEVERAL years since he's heard from her...

    • ANSWER:
First it should be right that the your hubby pay only 1/2 of it & the 1/2 comes from her mother. It makes sense equally. The car is just a luxury for her what happen to being a responsible young adult, kids only want want want, maybe she should get a job & pay it herself a lesson on life. He already pays child support. Tell her to catch the bus, make up some story while he was growing up there was no easy way to get what he wanted, this will teach her the value of what is necessary in life. The car she can do without if she want it work for it. btw, i have 2 teenage boys 17 & 13 i'm a single parent & no support I work so they too so teach your child some values on life lessons.

Cheapest auto insurance for a teen?
im 18, got a used car, and now need insurance to drive it. my family has AAA auto and if im added to that ill be paying 2k a year. i also work at target and might get a discount on metlife or travelers but i cant get quotes online and also think it wount beat the adding on plan. is there any good autoinsurance or should i just be added on parents?
if i go to the website individually i can get a quote, but my special target link and such it says i cant and need to call but its labor day

    • ANSWER:
If your parents do not own the car (i.e. on the title), then the vehicle cannot be added to their insurance policy. You as a driver may, but they would likely not cover damage to the vehicle - which is the whole point of insurance.

Cheapest, can only be answered by getting as many quotes as possible. As much as I understand someone wanting the "cheapest" insurance, keep in mind, you often get what you pay for! Many big name insurance companies that offer low cost insurance, do so because they can afford to. This often comes at the expense of the insureds denied claims.

Coverage is a big issue as well. Make sure you have adequate coverage for your vehicle and state requirements. If possible, stick with a well known company and not a "fly-by-night" organization offering low rates.

  43. QUESTION:
Auto insurance help needed regarding teen aged driver...Can they do this?
O.K. Two months ago we put our 16 year old teen driver on our insurance...She has her permit. We have since decided to take her off as it's just to much money for us right now. She will not be allowed to drive until she can pay the difference with her job. The insurance Co. said she cannot be removed from the policy now that they know about her. She has to remain there unless we prove that she does not live in the house our has insurance with someone else. Isn't that our choice about who's on the policy?? Is there a way out of this? Thanks for any advice on this one.

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately, it's true. Even if you don't allow her to drive, she's still considered a risk by the insurance company. Ask them if she can be listed as an excluded driver. She will not be able to drive your cars while she's listed as such, and if she does, and has an accident, any claim would be denied, and you would run the risk of being fropped by the insurance company. But, your rates would be lower.

  44. QUESTION:
If you teen gets a driving permit are they automaticly covered under your (parent) auto insurance?

    • ANSWER:
In my state, Alaska, and with my insurance carrier, Allstate, my kids are included at no extra cost while they have their learners permit and their restricted license that requires I be in the car whenever they are driving it... But only if I tell them about it, and have them listed. This differs not only state to state, but insurance carrier to insurance carrier. And it does not care if you are a parent, they care if they live in the household.

After they have a full license to drive without me in the car, they are named on the policy, and it starts to cost money, whether I actually *ever* let them drive the car at all.

There is a class open only to 16+ kids that reduces their insurance cost, but not enough to make it worth the cost of the class for me. It may make them better drivers, but I have been in the car for 2 years with each of mine, and they are already good drivers.

The discounts for good student are significant enough that mine get to keep their licenses only as long as they rate the discount.

I have my license, and auto insurance, but no drivers insurance. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?
I just got my license today I'm 17.
I have a registered car, and legal auto insurance.
But since i'm a teen driver my parents have not gotten me teen driver insurance.
    Can I still drive alone?
    Please help me~!
I'm not driving my own car, I'm driving my parents car, registered and insured under their legal names.

Ps. I do not have my own car

    • ANSWER:
At 17 you can't enter into an ongoing financial obligation, which is what insurance is. And insurance goes with vehicles, so you have your parents contact their agent, and add you as an additional driver on the policy for their car, and you will be covered.

This is something they should have done immediately when you got your license.

  50. QUESTION:
In Minnesota, would a new teen driver be covered even if not specifically listed on an auto insurance policy?
    Minnesota, newly licensed driver

    • ANSWER:
Your new driver would have coverage automaticaly according to state law, however you do need to let your agent know as soon as they get their license with the number on it, this could take the state a couple of weeks. The state's Insurance brochure states "You are covered by the policy in your name. Any relative living in your home, who does not have a policy of his or her own, is covered by YOUR policy. This includes a spouse, children, or a minor in your custody or the custody of a relative. A driver using your car with your permission, who is not covered by another policy, will be covered by your policy." The reason that they do not state licensed driver or an age of children is because there are quite a few accidents that involve young children that manage to get a car out of park and roll out of driveways and accorss the streets. I have had more than one of these claims over the years. You can see the MN Commissioner of Insurance's auto insurance brochure at... http://www.state.mn.us/mn/externalDocs/Commerce/What_You_Need_to_Know_about_Auto_Insurance_013003105358_Auto%20Insurance3-00.pdf If you have any further questions please call your agent directly and they should be able to help you.

      Hope this helps.
