USA Insurance Market Intelligence: 2011 Edition
Published Date : 1 January 2011
Pages : 23
The US insurance sector is regarded as one of the best markets in the world, given its wide range of products and excellent customer service. The total US insurance gross premiums decreased in 2009 due to aftereffects of the recession and crisis in the financial system. High unemployment and declining payrolls also affected the overall US insurance market. Both life and non-life insurance premiums fell in 2009. Even though P&C segment witnessed a decline in premiums in 2009, its underwriting results improved due to lower catastrophe losses, reduced losses related to mortgage insurers and financial guarantors. Life insurance segment was affected by lower premiums from annuity considerations that account for a major portion of premiums share in this sector.
The P&C sector is highly fragmented with a number of companies operating in the market. State Farm Group is the largest insurer and the leading writers of health insurance include United Health Group, Wellpoint, Kaiser, Aetna, Humana Group, HCSC Group and American Family Corp Group. The largest life insurer is Metlife Inc followed by New York Life and AIG.
The signing of the health care reform on 21 March, 2010 is expected to make health care more affordable, health insurers more accountable, health coverage expanded to all Americans, health system sustainable, stabilizing family budgets, the Federal budget, and the economy. CBO (Congressional Budget office) has projected that growth in real GDP will accelerate after 2011, spurred by stronger business investment and residential construction. Improving economy, expected rise in disposable income and savings rate, demand for health and auto insurance policies will be driving the US insurance market in coming years.

I am moving out of USA for 3-4 months and i am planning to keep my car at friends garage.Do i still need to keep auto insurance? Do i also need to cancel registration?
I am moving out of USA for 3-4 months and planning to keep my car at friends garage.Do i still need to keep auto insurance? Do i also need to cancel registration? I am staying in NJ
i am staying in nj
what if I cancel registration and tags before going out of USA? Once I come again.. i will do registration . Is it a good option ?-
ANSWER:
Many states,NC where I live included, require you to keep insurance as long as the registration is current. If you cancel your ins. policy the ins. co. notifies the state and they require you to turn in the tags. I guess it helps keep uninsured drivers off the road.

QUESTION:
What USA Insurance companies don't use credit scores/ssn for auto/home insurance?-
ANSWER:
Credit scoring flat out isn't used, in California. Leader Infinity will omit the credit scoring upon your request, HOWEVER, they will then give you the highest rates (as if you have a horrible credit score). There are some SMALL regional carriers that might omit credit scoring, but none on a country wide level will do that.
Travelers, will manually underwrite, IF the low credit score is due to a divorce or a medical issue.
As always, talking with a local agent will probably get you more state specific information, than posting for generalizations that are valid for the entire country.

QUESTION:
How do mexicans look for auto insurance in Mexico?
When you live in Mexico, do people use yellow pages, local independent agents, online websites..how do they go by buying auto insurance?
Also, what is their biggest problem when coming to the usa and looking for auto insurance, aside from the language barrier? Are the coverage similar, do they have a trust problem, etc..what would be the most helpful thing a US insurance company could do for them?
Thanks for your help.-
ANSWER:
Auto insurances are a bit cheaper here in mexico... most banks and insurance companies offer auto insurances. Here in Mexico, most banks are in every state, so they have nationwide customers, and brochures can be found in every bank.Auto insurances are also advertised on TV, radio, online, yellow pages, but most of the time, people already know the names of the companies, and they would just ask for a quotation by telephone.
It is not mandatory to have an insurance here, so a lot of people (mostly poor people who cant afford insurance) wont have one
I drive a 2006 Toyota Rav4 and I pay around 1000USD/ year for my auto insurance with inbursa (www.inbursa.com.mx)
As I did, most people will go to the bank and just buy the insurance there.
When coming to the US there are a bunch of scenarios, mainly:
1) if I were to drive all the way there, I would have no problem and I understand that my insurance has coverage.... but it is too far anyhow.
2) when renting a car.. no problem, just get the insurance too.Language barrier,,, hmmmm, yes probably, but most people that can afford it would be able to understand what ur selling.
Of course that there are people that doesnt speak english in need for an auto insurance.

QUESTION:
High Point Auto insurance in NJ, USA?
I am existing Geico customer and got a quote from High Point which is saving me 35% on my 2002 Acura TL. I need some inputs on High Point. Is this a reasonable good company? How is the customer service & the claim process?
Your experience would really help me.
Thanks for your time.Dilip
-
ANSWER:
Helpful things to look at for High Point:Did they quote you line-per-line on coverages
Did they Run your motor vehicle report and do they have exactly the same info reported
Are you getting a "transfer discount" (lasting usually your first 6 months)
In essence, did you provide exact, to-the-last-detail info to High Point? If you haven't then your quote may be wrong. 35% is a huge difference and you should find out why!I Know I haven't answered your question yet but I strongly recommend you do the above first.
Then, take a look at A.M Best insurance ratings. They provide answers to all of your questions like "what is customer service like?" and "how financially stable is the company". It is a free site, it simply requires you to register (create a username and password, no fees of any kind) I use it often as they have excellent insight to thousands of companies, not just Insurance.
Compare the 2 companies on the website.
You may also want to call Geico for a free policy review to determine if they can lower your rate.

What kind of car insurance do I need for a rental, when I DON'T have any current auto insurance?
We are looking to rent a car for a month, and since we are both ex-pats, we don't have any USA car insurance. We've looked up and discovered we should get Collision, Liability and Comprehensive insurance. Where can we get these for cheap? My travel insurance includes a Collision option, but no Liability or Comprehensive (I'm American, my husband is English).-

QUESTION:
In the USA, how do ya make your own auto insurance (as if you're the company yourself) even if you don't own _
your own auto insurance company, and have the government recognize it as at least a legal liability insurance company (as a way of saving money from the high cost of actual insurance companies, especially if the cost by them has gone up and up...), but also limit the amount someone can get from you if they have a lawsuit against your own little self-insurance box you have going there?Hey! I have heard of people doing this, seriously! But I don't remember if it was auto insurance or just health insurance, for sure. So anyway... how do ya do it and get it recognized where it needs to be (since at least liability auto insurance is required by law here)?
Come back and see my responses to your answers, okay?
Thanks.
Hey, Dennis K, I never said I thought I could own my own auto insurance company, but obviously SOMEBODY owns them, or else they wouldn't exist! So how about YOU get real? GEESH, man!
Hey, Dennis K, I never said I thought I could own my own auto insurance company, but obviously SOMEBODY owns them, or else they wouldn't exist! So how about YOU get real? GEESH, man!
Dumdum, not necessarily. It just depends on how much the company has raised their rates on someone, and how much higher other companies would have their rates even if you switched to them, because of what may be on the record. It just depends. Thanks for trying, though...
Okay, Float King Oh, so what's the process?(To add that response to your answer, find the Edit link and then just add the new comment below the existing one--maybe you knew that already, though.)

QUESTION:
Is it possible to cancel the signature of auto insurance for new car?
Hello,I have just bought a new car in a Toyota car dealer: They have found for me an insurance for the car, comparing with different insurance companies. But now at home, I am trying a quote with Geico, and it seems that I could probably get a better price with this company (not completely sure, I need to call them).
Is it possible to cancel my signature as I did not receive the policy yet ? and I did not get my car yet (but tomorrow) ?
I don't know if here in USA we have the possibility during some days (one week for example) to retract ourself....
Thanks for information.
but is it possible not to start to pay a new car insurance and to change for another one....
I have paid totally my car by cash, and I will take it probably tomorrow. I have signed all the documents for the car insurance today.... but I am hesitation to contact Geico company since they seem to do better price for me..... I don't know if is possible to change right now..... and to cancel the first insurance (already paid for one full year).-
ANSWER:
This is going to be very lengthy so forgive me. Lots of people make big mistakes in situations just like these.YES, that policy can be canceled and you can even request a back-date cancellation. This will make the policy as if it never existed which means you'll get the full amount of premium back. You'll just need to ask them specifically for a backdate cancellation and tell them that it's because you didn't take posession of the vehicle. That's the only way they'll do it.
As for this other policy with Geico, yes. Get it started up! But here's your hanger:
You aren't going to get the money you paid the other insurance company back in time to spin that money around to pay Geico, not unless you contact them the same day that the money is taken. With most places, the payment has already been processed. They'll have to send you a refund which generally takes 7-14 days. As you can see, this will put you in a little bit of a bind since you're going to have to pay Geico to start the policy to take posession of the vehicle or leave this other policy in force.
My advice to you?
Go on and cancel that other company just ASAP, ask for backdate cancellation. Pay Geico for the first month (provided you're not completely broke by now), then send that money from the refund in to Geico to pay for the rest of your policy period.
When it comes to the amount of time you have to retract yourself, the ONLY way you can do that is if you didn't have the vehicle yet.. and that's only because no service was actually used during the time that you had that policy. You didn't drive a car, and you didn't drive the car that they had insured. If you already had the vehicle, then they have every right to keep a portion of that premium you paid since they technically were covering you for risks while you had the vehicle.
Does that make sense?

QUESTION:
How much does liability auto insurance cost in Florida?
I am coming up to 21 years old, and moving to Miami in August for a year with a student visa. I am told that it's very useful to have a car in the USA, and as I am a car owner in the UK with almost 2 years of comprehensive with no claims, I was hoping that I would be able to purchase a car in the USA.Will this be possible and at what price?
-
ANSWER:
Hello,We often take for granted what a convenience our cars are. I was paying a low price for my insurance, but at renewal time, my insurer tried to increase my rates.
My friend sent me a link to this site:

They have a free search to compare auto rates from the major insurers. It saved me a lot of money!

Does any international auto insurance from the USA cover injury, accidents and damage in Europe if you are using a European friend's car? Is it worth it?-

QUESTION:
What are the listings for African American or black owned auto insurance companies and agents.?
I want to support my people, because no one else is going to support us. Many immigrants only support their business owned by their people, but we blacks have very few businesses. We need to unite and support each other to survive in this every changing country. It feels as if we are second class citizens in our own communities. We have to do business and pay for services of people who dislike us,because we have no alternative. We blacks need to control, manage, and build business in our own communities. P.S. I love America USA is # 1-
ANSWER:
That's pretty ignorant to choose a service solely because of the color of ones skin. If you have local services and would like to support your community that's fine. America doesn't hate black people. Stop the self loathing. If you are a decent respectful man you will get the same from 99% of America. As far as immigrants supporting "their people", you're talking about nationalities. Often customs, languages, foods, etc of home countries are not mainstream in America, so they turn to other immigrants from their country in their community. Ignorance to combat ignorance will not work.

QUESTION:
Govt Healthcare - Why not govt funded auto insurance?
I keep hearing people that we have a problem in the USA that people do not have health insurance. Another problem we have is that people do not drive with adequate auto insurance or collision. To me the government does not belong mandating healthcare coverage, however this train wreck is coming down the pike real soon. Since we are into the social programs, why don't we make auto insurance a government funded program as well. That way we all have equal coverage should we get into an accident.
Thoughts on this crazy idea?
-
ANSWER:
Please don't give the left wing liberal loonies any ideas. If socialized medicine were enacted, there would be a part of it applicable to auto insurance. Most auto policies incldue medical payments coverage. That coverage would not be needed.

QUESTION:
What state or states do not require car Auto insurance in order to own a car and use it ?
I would like to know what states in USA do not require car Auto insurance for the owner or user of the car he or she is driving? If there is such a state please prove me where you get the source! And How does the driver pay off all the victim’s billing cost after injuring this victim and victim has a bunch of bills coming in from Hospital service?
If now you agree with me that all drives should be required to pay and have auto insurance, This is the same reason is why all people need to have healthcare insurance who can afford it! Not only it will keep the insurance cost lower for average “person”, everyone is now guaranteed to qualify without being denied due to history, disability, or medical cost person needs, but if everyone has health insurance nation wide medical expense will be less rising; like people who did not have insurance get into accident/injury
Whether falling off a cliff, get hit by a car and driver drives off, or gets injured due to snake bite. NONE of them are intentional or expected but they happen and many other!
If everyone is insured the insurance pays for the medical expenses whether its 0 or 0K
But if not everybody has healthcare insurance average “person” won’t be able to afford the $full medical bill will be hunted by collection agency but still not likely to pay any more then 00 for medical expenses! There for the rest of the medical cost falls on WHOM??? THE TAX TAPYERS OR OTHER medical service Customers!!! By raising the prices of medical expenses! THAT is why California’s Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance Raised about 57% cost in 2010 or 2011!! What do you expect if Thousand or millions of Illegal most Latino immigrant get Medical service in Hospitals like even Child birth, or emergency room, but they don’t have medical insurance, can’t afford it, YOU SEE that raised their insurance cost BY 57%!!! DO YOU WANT THIS TO HAPPEN NATION WIDE??
IF NO
If you want Medical cost to remain affordable,
THEN
A)Support National Healthcare that everybody should have it who can afford it
B)In order to receive Fed/State TAX, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid from the Illegal Immigration should be attempted to be caught and exported to their main country, or should be attempted to be caught and if given full citizen ship to them only if these immigrants must server some number of years of Army, military, or Air force service “voluntarily”. OR be required to pay a minimum amount of $ that individual invested into the Social Security system, or minimum number of years legally work in U.S.A, if they want to receive the Social Security benefits if future.
HOWEVER
How many years serving , How much individual or couple invested minimum, and /or how many minimum number of years in order to qualify for Social Security service is up to the government to calculate and decide.THIS WAY Citizens Will all be able to fully pay their medical expenses, and The illegal immigration will not be as big of an issue!

ANSWER:
The liberal state of Oregon self insures many of their own drivers and avoids the cost of commercial insurance. Other states let individuals self-insure as well (see form for georgia below) I guess this pretty much blows out your comparison. Not too mention that those that do not drive are not forced to buy auto insurance either.
"How does the State insure its risk of loss? The State uses both self-insurance and commercial policies to insure its risk of loss. This combination has proven to be cost effective for the State.
The Insurance Fund, established by ORS 278.425, is used to provide both commercial and self-insurance coverage for the State of Oregon.
ORS 278.405 grants broad authority to DAS-RM to purchase commercial insurance, develop and administer self-insurance programs, or any combination, thereof, as may be in the best interest of the state. DAS-RM may condition payment of all or part of any loss covered by the Insurance Fund.
What is self-insurance?
Self-insurance is an alternative to the purchase of commercial insurance. The State of Oregon has developed its own formal program of self-insurance to identify, evaluate and pay for its losses."
Lastly, take a look at the disability program in the USA. Only workers with so many quarters of work are eligible for social security disability. Should'nt we force everyone else into this coverage? Why not force everyone to buy at least enough life insurance to be buried? Insurance against identity theft, rental insurance, homeowner's insurance? Government can not protect everyone from cradle to grave. People should weigh their own cost and benefits and provide for themselves. It is called personal responsibility. When they come up short, charities should step up (many do) and help.

QUESTION:
Auto insurance for international visitor?
I will be travelling to West coast USA this summer for two months and i am very much hoping to rent a car. The only problem with this is my age. I am under 21, and while i have managed to find plenty of companies willing to rent to me, they all require that i provide my own liability insurance. The CDW (collision damage waiver) is not an issue since this is covered by my credit card company. My home auto-insurance in the UK does not extend Liability over driving a) rental cars or b) the USA.
I understand it is possible to buy either just personal liability insurance or a "non-owners" car insurance policy. The problem with both of these is that i don't have an address in the USA. Is there any way i can still obtain insurance?
-
ANSWER:
Sure - Progressive will insure ANYTHING for a price - but you will normally have to have a six month policy with them or cancel early (which could cost you more in the long run.)You might want to contact a broker in CA for their particular rules and requirements.
Someone from the Oasis Insurance agencies or perhaps call 909-980-0038 and ask for Sharron. She is knowledgeable in the subject and should be able to assist.
Good luck and have a good trip!

QUESTION:
Important Auto Insurance Question?
A non-American girl, arrives in the USA to start her studies. She has a drivers license she received from her home country. There is this "law" saying that if a foreing person already has a driver's license he/she can transfer it into an american drivers license without taking the road test. So she did just that. She went to an auto insurance agency. The person there simply asked her whether she has been driving for 4 years, without specifying that she had to be driving in the USA for 4 years. She answered positively even though she hadnt been driving in the USA for 4 years. Now she is insured with that company. I'm 22 from the same country just got my drivers license in the USA without "transfering" the one i got from my home country. I called the same company for a quote, telling them that i have been driving since i was 18 in my home country (hoping i wasnt considered as a new driver) and what they told me was that "we cant insure you because you dont have any driving record in
the US". So what i want to know is: How does an insurance company know whether a foreign new driver is really a new driver or not? Someone told me that if that person was never licensed in the US then the insurance company will have to take your word for it. Is that true?-
ANSWER:
I don't know to which state you are referring, but I'm a licensed insurance broker in New York. Generally, if you can demonstrate previous driving history - from anywhere - you should not be considered a "new" driver. In New York you have to show three years driving history to no longer be considered "inexperienced". They don't simply have to take your word for it; you have to prove it. While your original license (if you still have it) should show a issue date which would demonstrate driving experience, the most helpful thing that you could do for yourself would be to secure a copy of your driving history/record/abstract from your home country which would show not only the original issue date of your driver's license but also your driving history. Good luck!

QUESTION:
auto-insurance coverage for co-passenger (no medical coverage)?
I live in Colorado, USA. Recently, while driving a rental car, I met with an accident. I was at fault for the accident. One of my friend was traveling during the accident. And he got whiplashed because of the accident. He took the treatment, diagonosis and approached his healthcare provider to claim for the expenses incurred for the treatment. My friend's healthcaare provider processed it initially. However, he they have got back now and queried about this accident information and why it was claimed when this must be covered by driver's auto -insurance, i.e., me.Please note that as a driver, I was insured with auto insurance which covers sufficient BI, CD. I did not choose for 'Medical Coverage' as part of auto insurance policy. (as I had health insurance to take care). So, in this case, since he was traveling in the same vehicle which met with accident and I was driving it, I am wondering :
1) how will my auto insurance policy cover it, as BI?
2) If my auto insurance policy denies it on the ground that the claim person is driving in the same vehicle, will his health care provider be taking care of?
I would really appreciate any kind of information around this.
Thanks,
Paddy-
ANSWER:
Your BI coverage from your own personal car's policy should extend to the rental policy. Not all companies will allow the extension though. Check with your company. if it turns out that your BI didn't extend, then your passengers health insurance will have to cover it. They are merely making sure that some other insurance or person isn't liable before they cover their insured.

QUESTION:
Is auto insurance really "MANDATORY," or is it just conditional on if you want the PRIVILEGE of driving?
You need a license to drive a car on the public roads, legally.Did that make a driver's licens mandatory?
No, you don't get arrested if you dont' drive and you don't have one.
A license is only a CONDITION for driving.
Now most states have added auto LIABILITY insurance as a CONDITION for getting your car inspected or renewing the registration.
It is not MANDATORY.
It is a CONDITION for exercising the PRIVILEGE of driving a car legally on public roads.
Now health care reform's health insurance requirement IS A MANDATE. You are required to have it, regardless of what privileges you exercise.
Unless you count being not being poor or an undocmented immigrant a "privilege."
So, now being in the USA legally and being above the poverty line is a PRIVILEGE, according to the Democrats.

QUESTION:
Why am I being contacted by the other party's auto insurance company?
I was involved in an accident last month that involved another car. No tickets were issued, but I was marked as being at-fault for the accident on the police report (Failure to yield). This happened in Michigan, USA.Now, the other party's insurance company has sent me two letters. One is requesting me to call them, saying they have been unable to contact me by phone. (Which is weird, since I don't have any missed calls). The other asks me to fill out a report describing the accident.
Why on earth would her insurance company need to contact me? I'm really curious, and don't want to have to wonder about it until Monday. Also, do I really have to fill out this report? Can't they just read the police report, for goodness sakes?
Yes, I have insurance.Isn't Michigan a no-fault state?
Also, my phone number is listed correctly on the police report, as is my insurance provider.-
ANSWER:
They are investigating the accident, they are entitled to all details. Call your own insurance adjuster for clarification.

QUESTION:
Auto rental insurance help?
Let's say I need to rent out a car. Let's say I go with auto rental company 'A'.I have a VISA Credit card that provides auto rental Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).
Read more about it here : http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/benefits/bft_dmg_waiver_personal.htmlNow, I could decline the rental car companys' CDW (which is usually priced at around /day), but do I need to get Liability from the auto rental company?
I thought I read somewhere that when you rent out a car, it has basic 'standard' liability applied on it by default. Is this true? I'd like to get this answered by an insurance firm guru!
I'm asking this as when I recently rented out a car, I declined the CDW (as it's already there on my VISA CC), but asked to get liability insurance on the vehicle (around /day). I was billed for 'Supplemental Liability Insurance', which got me thinking. If it was 'supplemental', maybe there was basic liability coverage applied to it already. Thoughts?
-
ANSWER:
As you know, CDW covers only damage to the rental car itself.
It does not coverage damage to the other vehicle that you crashed into, it does not cover medical expenses of the occupants of either vehicle, it does not cover the cost of replacing the light pole you ran into. it does not cover injury to the pedestrian you ran down.Just about every state requires that fleet owners such as rental car companies provide the state minimum liability insurance coverage. You cannot waive that. But the state minimums in most states are pathetically inadequate. They are as low as ,000 per accident in some states. If you smash into anything more than a 25 year old clunker and are at fault, the damage is going to be more than that. If anyone is injured and they need to go to the emergency room, the bill is going to be several times that much and then add pain and suffering, lost wages, etc.
"Supplemental" refers to the fact that the coverage is in addition to the state-mandated minimum.
If you have your own car, your own insurance policy may provide liability coverage when you rent a car. But do check. Even with the same insurance company, the answer may be different depending on your state and on the type of policy you have. Don't take anyone's word over the internet. There is no credit card that provides liability coverage. If you don't have any liability insurance of your own, it is smart to take the rental car company's coverage. Even if you are eventually found not liable in court, the legal bills will kill you if you are not covered. (The rental company could just give the other side the policy limits and leave you hanging to pay the rest, including any legal bills for defending the rest of the claim.)

QUESTION:
OBAMA national health care insurance REQUIREMENT SUPPORT OR AGAINST?
KEEP Reading keep reading all has to do with national health care insurance!
What state or states do not require car Auto insurance in order to own a car and use it ?I would like to know what states in USA do not require car Auto insurance for the owner or user of the car he or she is driving?

ANSWER:
No state requires you own a car, or drive. Therefore only people who choose to drive, are required to carry insurance. So you are saying only people who choose to live should be required to carry health insurance. That's like the government wants EVERYONE covered. People with pre-existing conditions cannot get coverage. So the government comes up with a program (PCIP) to help them, then demands they go without ANY health insurance for 6 months before they can apply. http://www.healthcare.gov/law/provisions/preexisting/index.html
Your logic makes about as much sense as the governments

QUESTION:
Is fishstix stupid or just blind to the fact that USA is a communist country now?
Fishstix is in denial. We are in a communist country here in the USA and she is offended and states that we are not. Now, lets see. They own the banks, auto industry, social security, insurance companies, mortgage companies just to name a few former capitalist companies. GOVERNMENT IS OUT OF CONTROL PEOPLE - RISE UP AND BE HEAR AND TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR COUNTRY AGAIN-
ANSWER:
Wow, I feel so special that you need to post a question about my intelligence. You called me a liberal, but you may be surprised to find that I've been a lifelong registered Republican. I believe in the death penalty, the right to bear arms, have strong views regarding immigration, and am pro-life. Because I disagree with you does not make me a liberal nor stupid. If we are now a communist country...
What job did the government assign you to do?
When were you refused your right to vote?
Are you making the same wage as everyone else in the country?
Are you seeing the doctor that was assigned to you by the government?
Have you been refused the right to gather publicly to speak out against your government leaders?
Have you been arrested for speaking against the government?
Are our government leaders not elected but instead just took over?I could go on and on. The United States is a democracy. Look in your question..."They own the banks, auto industry, social security, insurance companies, mortgage companies..." If I read the news right, most if not all actually ASKED for the government assistance. The government did some long and hard thinking before giving any of the groups money. It's not like the government jumped on the chance to "own" these failing institutions. Our elected leaders decided to help out these institutions because the US and world overall would be in a much worse situation if they hadn't. Can you imagine going to your bank to make a withdrawal only to find that the doors have closed permanently and your money is all gone?
By the way...the United States doesn't "own" any of those institutions that you mentioned. They're still companies with their own organization and business plans and still have private and public shareholders.
The fact that you and I can publicly disagree and can publicly debate the state of affairs also proves my point that the US is not a communist country. Like I posted in my answer to your other question, if you don't like the way the government is handling things, you have a voice. Talk to your elected leaders and let them know your opinion and your way of getting out of the situations that we're in.
Or are you one of those people that just want to sit back and whine and complain and be a problem instead of the solution? I have a feeling that you just might be...especially since you felt the need to call me out to bash me and call me names based on my opinions. I'm sorry you have such a terrible miserable life. I am happy and proud to be an American and live in this country.

QUESTION:
What would happen if the insurance companies went out of business?
Please give me the answer as to what you think & if you are some one here to put down others don't even answer. I don't like garbage/clutter. I am looking for serious in debt answers. Do we need insurance companies....I have not had health insurance for years it got to expensive & when I went back to buy it with a pre-existing condition it was way too expensive....what if we didn't have auto insurance....are we afraid of what this would be like....many strange things have happened but what would the USA be like with no insurance. Are we addicted to it? Could we actually live without it?....didn't people live without it years ago? They seemed to have had more time to spend with people they enjoyed being with back then. I remember my grandparents but my family has moved far away just to have a job......Would we actually be better off doing without the big businesses who are costing us so much & have us panicking to save them?I would also like to know if you don't mind, what party you are with?
Would reps. rather do without insurance? or they just want certain people to have it? so telling me your party might give us some info. as to what each party tends to want or not want.
Please star this if you have good contacts so they can give their answer.Thank you.
to Entrophy: I was not making a statement about republicans but asking a question so I think you have misread my intentions.-
ANSWER:
Interesting question. If insurance companies went out of business, the money to pay doctors would have to come from somewhere else. With the cost of going to a doctor or even a short stay in a hospital so expensive, most people couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for these services. The only thing I could see would be government run health care, where more taxes would need to be taken from American workers to pay for services performed by doctors. I think that is the scare so many have when they think that a government option could indeed put insurance companies out of business by undercutting them so much. Basically it speaks to me of becoming another welfare system where the people who work and actually pay taxes, would be taxed even further to pay for another program for those who don't pay income taxes. I'm going to stop there. BTW, I'm a conservative. And please don't confuse that with Republican, because I think most if not all politicians, whether democrat or republican, are self-serving crooks who enjoy the power they have more than looking out for what's the best overall for the United States as a whole.

QUESTION:
Health Insurance & Portability between jobs?
Health insurance has been a topic of conversation on YA. Many support it, many are against it.Currently the insurance industry is one of the most government regulated institutions in the USA. Their are federal and state laws that govern health insurance and make it a buracratic nightmare.
Our current auto insurance system allows for competition between companies on a national level. Keeping our insurance costs lows. If I leave my job, my car insurance stays with me.
Current regulations state that I must have a job to be offered health insurance. I leave this job, I lose my insurance and must use COBRA for up to 12 to 18 months to keep my coverage. Why can't I buy my own health insurance and have it be portable across state lines like car insurance?
It seems to me that fixing these types of problems with healthcare is more affordable than implementing a national healthcare system. There is low cost car insurance, why not low cost health?
Civil - I read up on this web site that you mentioned. This is only for individuals who are self employed or own small businesses. First question they will ask is if you have a job that offers insurance. If the answer is yes, you have to go through them. So while this is a valid site, it doesn't answer my question.-
ANSWER:
Bingo.Combine the above mentioned portability and interstate insurance competition with tort reform, fair tax treatment for individuals purchasing insurance, and income tax deductions (or credits) for health expenses, and you will see the cost of health care dropping while the ranks of insured grow.
Market based solutions are the only option if this country wants to maintain (and improve) the quality of its health care while reducing costs.
Government based solutions may reduce costs, but it will do so by rationing and sacrificing quality.
Edit: The major reason that insurance is so opaque and expensive now is because of over-regulation. Companies are required to cover expensive procedures and treatments that do not benefit a vast majority of the policy holders (fertility treatment, drug and alcohol rehab, etc) It stands to reason then, that states requiring these treatments be covered are among the most expensive states to attain health insurance. Removing competition restrictions from insurance companies would do more to reduce costs and increase enrollment than any other solution available.

QUESTION:
Car Rental Insurance - What is the legal minimum Required?
I currently have a US Drivers license, and a car, with insurance. I am about to sell my car, and will be cruising on my boat, returning to the USA several times a year, and when necessary will rent a car. BUT since I will not have auto insurance with my current car - what are the LEGAL minimum insurance options I need for a rental car - and is there any way to purchase that outside of the rental company? I don't fancy paying a day for insurance... But I don't want to break the law of find problems in the event of an accident-
ANSWER:
Rental companies are normally self insured for liability - what you buy from them is a physical damage waiver that keeps YOU from being held up for damages to the rental car. There is SOME coverage on your major credit cards - so, keep that in mind as well!
Good luck and I hope this helps!

QUESTION:
Why do people sue each other in America?
Ok last political question...but I really want to understand this...because Canada isn't much different than the USA but nobody really sues one another here. I don't know if it's because we have insurance which covers us for a lot of things (ie Workman's Comp for injuries, private insurance, long term disability, auto insurance, etc. etc.) or what. But in the USA it seems you can't open your mouth without fear of being sued. Someone slips on your driveway and you're being sued. One child hits another, and parents sue....this is insane.
Don't you think that somehow this has to change? That courts and judges need to make a point of dismissing ridiculous claims and banishing these money hungry lawyers who just profit off of people's miseries?
I mean am I missing something here? Why is America like this?
I mean if I would have sued for a kid slandering my daughter all over the internet the judge would have taken a strip off me for wasting his time with that nonsense.
-
ANSWER:
We have too many lawyers in the US. They look around for ways to make money. They take liability cases on a contingency basis, meaning that they get a part of the settlement. If no settlement or jury award, they get nothing. Even if a defendant wins, it can cost him a lot of money to defend.
We do have all kinds of insurance. People even sue when they have coverage, like workers compensation.
Most of the people in Congress are lawyers. Changes in our laws to get rid of lawsuits will not happen. The trial lawyers associations are big campaign contributors.
I was an insurance claims adjuster. I retired early because I could not stand the lying, cheating, thieving, SOB's and their clients.
